KYW-FM...It makes no sense

It's probably me....but I just don't get it, all the Sports Talk Stations. He threw the ball, he dropped the ball, now that lose is analysed all day. There are Six four hour shows,if i'm wrong, each show is analysing, and taking calls on why that team lost the game. Oh, I forgot, if it was an upset, now let's spend four hours talking about why it was an upset. Please!!!

I agree how much sports talk can one take. Its the same jargon over and over and now more and more stations are flipping to this limited format. The only spoken word formats that I consider OK are news or talk, but sports give me a break. IMHO the FM band was soley for music and at least 50% of the AM band can be used for music.

Simple reason that sports is moving to FM: $$$$$$$. Ratings may be low but the format bills well.

Plus, the target audience does not listen to AM. National sports networks may be able to survive on AM if the signal is good, but local talk belongs on FM. This looks like the way CBS is going with WFAN. Music is being listened to on MP3 players/iPods and online more and more (and it's not just the kids doing this either), and I think there's a music royalties issue now as well.

The NFL led this pack almost 20 years ago, when some of its teams moved their games to FM. The Arizona Cardinals were among the first, if not the first to do so in 1994. In other words, the future of FM is talk, both sports and news.

CBS should buy 106.9 and brand it KYW-FM. They then promotes "KYW All News on AM" and does news/talk on FM. They could simulcast morning drive and then brand their top of the hour newscasts on FM as "KYW News" or from the "KYW 1060 newsroom". They could keep Rush and tweek the rest of the talk programming for the best ratings. They might even consider local talk in PM drive so they can run more traffic reports and news updates (or consider simulcasting with the AM from 5-7pm.) They already own the "news" franchise in town. They can also own the "talk" franchise in town. ;D

I don't think so. CBS already owns a Talk station on 1210. And Merlin is already running a Talk station on 106.9. So CBS wouldn't buy 106.9 and keep it Talk.

KYW is the big money maker, and has been for years. For some reason, Talk really performs poorly in Philadelphia. 20 or 30 years ago when WWDB 96.5 was doing Talk it would often be a top 10 station. It had hosts who were liberal, moderate and conservative. It was all local around the clock, even taking phone calls at 4am on Sunday. But since then, no Talk station ever seems to do well in Philadephia, except when the Phillies would sometimes push 1210 into good ratings in the summer. And that won't happen anymore with the Phillies now also heard on WIP-FM.

I don't know why it's true in Philadelphia, but local radio listeners will tune into 1060 for the news, then listen to music the rest of the day... or now Sports. They don't seem to care about Talk, even with WPHT moving to mostly local hosts all day and evening. They don't seem to care about Rush, Hannity, Beck, etc., judging from WWIQ's poor ratings.

CBS was forced to simulcast WIP on FM after Greater Media put Sports on 97.5. But at this point, CBS must protect its biggest money-maker. If CBS can get another FM, it will likely simulcast KYW.

CBS owns a talk station here, WPHT. They had a chance and blew it.

CBS's strategy in most of their larger markets has been all news and all sports. As far as music radio goes, they were once big into the rock and urban formats. Outside of a few heritage stations in certain cities, their music formats they've signed on of late have been mostly pop based (AC, Hot AC, CHR & classic hits.) Talk really has been minimized in most of their large markets, including Philly. I don't think any of their talkers (all-news excluded) are on FM, while their most of their all-sports stations are. WPHT is not as cross-promoted on their CBS/Philly website and on CBS3 nearly as much as KYW, WOGL and WIP are. I just don't see talk radio being a major part of their future. Once the AM talkers die out, that may be it for CBS.

It seems that sportstalk is the new big thing for radio as both CBS radio sports (now on 610/94.1 WIP with hourly headlines when in Jan '13 will carry 24/7 on 610) and NBC radio sports headlines on AM 1490 near Trenton, no full time affiliates yet announced in Philly/Wilmington/Trenton areas) are both now entering the sportstalk foray. Besides these two, we've already got, ESPN radio (97.3 in NJ, 97.5), Fox Sports Radio on Wilmington's AM 1290 WWTX which also carries Premiere radio sports talk programming too. So that's about 5 sports radio networks (they're probably others I don't know of since they aren't broadcasting in the Tri-State area - DialGlobal Radio also carries many national games that both Philly and Wilmington stations broadcast like last night San Francisco vs Seattle NFL game on 610 WIP, 95.3 NJ, and 1150 WDEL). Besides the national networks we have the totally live and local sports talk on 94.1 and some local on 97.5 other than I believe in AM drive when they carry Mike and Mike from ESPN.

My point is, sports talk seems to be the next big thing in spoken word formats for radio, be it AM or FM. My guess is, many folks are tired of "political talk" radio (I definitely am), be they liberal or conservative. It really is the same thing day in and day out. Many people, both men and women do follow sports and probably will get into sport talk radio. I believe if marketed in the right way, Sports Talk Radio could really be the next big spoken word format for radio. An example: I sing in my local United Methodist Church choir and last night at the rehearsal, I listened to some of the Tigers / Yankee's game on 950 as I drove to the rehearsal. Anyhow, during the rehearsal, a number of women, plus men asked what what the score of the game. The female organist/pianist picked up her I-phone and immediately told us the game had ended and the final score was 8-1 Tigers are going to the World Series. Apparently during the rehearsal when she wasn't playing, she was following the game on her I-phone. There is a market to attract both male and females listeners to sport talk radio. Apparently both CBS radio and NBC radio ( I believe via Dial Global the old Westwood One) see the potential in this format.

Getting back to the original point of this thread, YES, eventually CBS radio will move KYW to FM with an AM simulcast. They won't now as their 1060 AM is #1 in Philly, but it will happen some day. Apparently folks WILL tune to AM to get that traffic and weather that makes their commute a bit better.

All news KCBS San Francisco and WBBM Chicago are simulcast on AM and FM. :)

I like the idea of 106.9 branded as KYW-FM Here's what I would do

5-9 Morning News block/simulcast 1060
9-12 Glenn Beck
12-3 Rush
3-8 News Block/simulcast 1060
8-11 Sean Hannity
11-12 News Block/simulcast 1060
12-5 The CBS overnight talk show that airs on KDKA and KMOX

No Way Glenn Beck, Rush and Hannity does not fit on the KYW-FM Format. if KYW-FM exist they should follow KCBS or WBBM is doing.

You guys aren't getting it. CBS has no interest in putting political talk programming on FM. NONE of their stations are doing it. The ONLY talk-formatted stations on FM they own are either all-news (KFRC-FM simulcasting KCBS, WCFS simulcasting WBBM) or all-sports (WIP-FM, WJFK-FM, WBZ-FM, etc.) They do own some news/talkers like WPHT, KDKA and WTIC/Hartford among others which run Rush and other political shows, but they're all on AM! Why would Philly be any different? If CBS was to get 106.9, KYW would most likely simulcast there....24/7. All news. It's possible they would move at least some of the WWIQ talkers back to 1210, or pass on them completely.
