KZAP Tx Question

Can anyone tell me where the old KZAP 98.5 transmitter was located back in the 80's? I didn't think the current 98.5 tower east of Folsom went up until around 1993. Thanks.

If it wasn't on that specific tower, it was on the one accross the freeway or anotherone around that location.

Newsperson responds:

As I recall Kent Randles talked about the major move more than 25 miles from downtown Sacramento to El Dorado Hills/White Rcok as one move. If that's correct it was still on the Elks Temple rooftop and moved directly to El Dorado.

As I also remember they built their own tower on the north side. Although it is now owned by American Tower Company.

The biggest concern back then was were they going to loose listeners downtown, but look at what they gained.

If there was any interim tower location it had to be downtown somewhere.

Anyone else have any memories about this?

They moved up to the hill by 1980. Their signal was horrible when they were on the Elks Tower. They were only running about 20 kw at less than 280 feet. Plus, as a class B they were short spaced ( and still are) with was then KOME in San Jose. By 1980, they were causing interference with KOME at my location in San Mateo County.

Newsperson responds:

Wow the Elks Temple that brings back old memories of the first time I visited KZAP. It was 1969 and Bob Bartell was on the air.

In 1971 or 1972 I remember selling ads for KZAP at Lake Tahoe. There was an "Earth Store" than ran a lot of spots. I remember KZAP turned down a $ 1,200.00 buy from Bank of America. It just didn't fit with the mission of KZAP. Are those days gone by or what?

Hey Michael, speaking of the Elks Temple, would that be a good transmitter site for one of these new FM translators?

Absolutely....Especially if you wanted to fill in a hole downtown. In fact the 1201 K building (Ban Roll-On building) is where K47DQ used to rebroadcast the San Jose Telemundo station before Sacramento got it's own in 1999-2000. I'm not sure where the Daystar KRJR-LP 47 is broadcasting now or if they're even on channel 47 any more.

Then, of course, there's always the old Bee tower where KBMB 103.5, K290AI and KBTV-CA broadcast from.

I live in Clovis and I usually receive KDFO The Fox from Bakersfield, I tuned in and heard current rock, I thought KDFO switched to a Active rock format, But no, It was KQRX coming in good, must have been some good Tropo conditions that night. Also driving over Pacheco Pass on 152 I heard all 3 KUFX,KQRX, and KDFO as I was driving. I580 is the same way between Tracy and Dublin. I heard both KUFX and KQRX. I also agree KUFX and KQRX are short-spaced. I heard both in other areas in the Bay Area.

I think you made a typo? It is KRXQ not KQRX unless they recently changed?

You are correct my bad it's is KRXQ ,I remember hearing KZAP back in the 80s. I always had outdoor FM antennas on my roof as well as TV. I used to get 94.5 KWSS, 97.3 KRQR, 92.5 the bear and a lot of signals before they were all blocked by new signals from Fresno/Visalia. Now it's hard to DX. This is off the subject I used to get KSBW 8,KCRA 3 KNTV 11, KXTV 10 and KOVR 13. Before KFRR went on the air in 92 I had KHOP 104.1 and before 92.9 raised their tower 93.1 KOSO had a good signal when they were at MT.Oso. I like to DX I'm a radio geek I still can get KLOS 95.5 and KZOZ 93.3.

I know, resurrecting a VERY old thread -

I got a close up of the old self support tower south of 50 last week (off White Rock Rd). So old it used to have the red/white paint but you can't tell anymore. I presume this tower dates back to the 50's or 60's when Family Radio went on the air with 100.5 KEBR??

106.5 is on top (presumably added around 1977), and below the 100.5 directionals there is a 5-bay (Collins?) ring-stub antenna currently not in use. My guess is this was KZAP when they moved from downtown, until 1993 when the present 98.5 guyed tower was built on the north side of 50 to increase height. At that point the old antenna was abandoned in place.

Can any old radio pros on here confirm??

Not "loose' it's "lose". Most misspelled word on the internet.

Isn't 105.1 KNCI also a tenant on this same tower?

It's been at least 15 years since I've been to the site, but at that time the only ring-stub antenna was 105.1, and on a guyed tower next to the self-supporter you speak of. There wasn't any ring-stub on the tower with 106.5 and 100.5. I'm pretty sure the new K-Love 99.5 is up there somewhere tho. It could be that.

That's what I first thought, but checked and KLVB 99.5 is a 2-element ERI on the taller self-support cellular tower, just north of KNCI...

It is, it's about a 1/4 of the way down on the AT&T self supported tower. They use a two bay side mount. I believe it's the first tower south of 50. KLVB has an interesting past at that site. Originally signed on as KLVS, went dark, changed to KSTN for a short time and then KLVB when it signed back on a little over a year ago (I think).
