KZL Stunting.....

"I report, you decide"

Well, I have decided. You are right. I am a genius.

Dude, eyewitness, it's all right, I'd probably come across as pissed off and angry if I had to still work in radio too man.
And I'm a pretty level-headed guy. :D

It's a stunt. It's smart. It worked. They got what they wanted...press. Especially at a time when advertising money is scarce and WTQR is trying to draw attention to themselves. I think KZL's timing was brilliant! No way are they changing format on what is probably the most successful station in the market! And, another thing, this is the kind of thing that always made radio FUN! Imagine that!!!???? It's the kind of stuff we used to do before the big corporate suits came in and made it all business like. What a cool gottcha!

Uh, "most successful radio station in the market?" I think not. Most successful morning show in the market.. ABSOLUTELY!

Isn't it funny how those who are out of the business claim they're glad to be, yet are still so interested in the industry that they feel compelled to read about it and discuss it on websites like this one? Sorry quadraphonic...I'm sure this business was a lot better back in the glory days but there are some of us who are currently in it and actually ENJOY it. ;)

Wait a minute...my wife's boss has a friend who said she saw on the TV that they really are suspended! It's real! First ain't Eloise and now our beloved turkey necked Jack Murphey. I, for one will miss his long winded "reads" from the show prep sheets. I'm sorry I said it was a phony balogna stunty thang. It was on the TV on the news and all! I hope whoever they get to replace Bloaty Blurphy isn't a sex offender like the one they put in place of Eloise. :-X That was on the news, too!!!!!!

Not really that funny, because radio is still there every day, would you expect everyone who was ever in it to be ate up with hate to the point they would avoid all mention of it? Do they also have to rip the radio fuse out of their car, or the radio out altogether? Do former waitresses never eat out? Do former medical receptionists never visit another doctor? Former librarians vow to never visit another library or bookstore?

Nah, man, people like to bunch up in like-minded communities. Plus, this is the internet man, the classic time waster, or information source, as the case may be (it goes back and forth for me, I have to admit) for a lot of peops. Mill workers and plant workers and former teachers and insurance salesmen and policemen and government workers and businessmen get together for reunions and meetings in my town, they're in the paper all the time, some even meet weekly and daily in small groups. The internet just makes it easier for more former radio people to glom up in one place, over the course of a day, and it looks like it all happens at once.

You're still on the inside, so it looks like "hating" to you, but it's not really. Some of it is nostalgia, some of it is wanting things to be the way they were, sometimes it IS legitimately pointing out stupid people who are still in radio [they are still in every industry too, not just radio]. Some of it might verge on ha'in, but not the real hate.

And if you're going to defend a 55-year-old [estimated] man [estimated :D ] running a morning show that appeals to the younger set and who has been doing "the tried and true" for 30 years, you got to know you're going to take a li'l flak from outsiders man. You got to admit, the age thing is almost verging on automatic perv status in a lot of other life scenarios. The #1 25-54 status just makes it "all right" because it's a radio scenario, it wouldn't work in most other scenarios, or even in most other stations scenarios. You have to admit the sheer novelty and anomaly of this situation man. :D

As this relates to our discussion of local radio, I happen to know that former librarians still eat out and they think Murphy really was suspenderated. ;D

I still got to wonder, though, why would they want to steal listeners/buzz from that Roper guy coming to town?
Are KZL and 104.1 going after the same audience now?
Or was it just another lame end-of-week "dj being drawn and quartered" suspenderation? :)

Having personally worked down the hall from Jack for several years, let me vouch for his honesty and integrity. He would never do anything purposefully to manipulate the audience into a kneejerk, emotional reaction. Much like the McCain campaign would NEVER do anything to whip up hate for Mr. Obama by insinuating he's tolerant of terrorism, may in fact be a terrorist himself, is a "man of mystery" who cannot be trusted to be president because he is more sympathetic to Muslim causes than he is to American ones, the campaign pretending to be outraged anytime Obama's middle name is used.

Jack would NEVER, in concert with his bosses, concoct what some would consider to be the lamest, laziest, most obvious, overdone bit in radio history, the fake suspension shtick. One would do this if he knew that the idiots at local tv stations and gullible fools at local newspapers would buy it and report it without a hint of sophisticated skepticism. That is NOT the Jack Murphy I know.

It's these kind of charges against this seasoned pro that are helping to tear down the credibility of our industry. He made a small error in judgment and has done too much for his radio station, his community, his state, his country, his planet, and his family to be subjected to the kind of skepticism some of you radio wanna-bes, losers, and castoffs are spewing here. I stand with you Jack, against the jack-booted thugs and against THE MAN who would censor you. Carry on, brother!

Brad Krantz
FMTALK101.1-WZTK

Oh boy, is that praise from Caesar. Krantz is going to expound on what it takes to be a radio personality. Murphee hasn't been the same since one of the Chris guys (the fat one) left WKZL to be the top guy on the Freebird station. It's just another day in paradise in corpo-radio, where everyone loses except the listener.

On the other hand, I read that Roper landed the morning show at the local Kenny Chesney station. I always wondered what happened to Mr. Roper since he left Three's Company.

Krantz is just pissed that his little Dann Rather thing (which I'm sure he considered to be high art) fell as flat as 9-year-old pepsi.

I would listen to Brad, fellas.
He's a wily veteran of the radio wars.
He knoweth of which he speaks. And whatnot.

Maybe Jack Murphy is being railroaded.
Maybe we need to set up a defense fund.

I guess that makes Dick Clark a perv.....and maybe Steve Jobs and Bill Gates..since their products appeal to young people.

What an idioitic premise.

Yep, he should know. Brad has been thrown off more TV stations for stupid stunts while at Rock 92 than anyone I can think of. That is why hardly any TV station around here will talk to him now. What an ego. ::)

I am guessing none of you have really listened to Brads show or really know Brad. For any of you to think his post is serious shows you are out of touch. I hope I'm not the only one who gets it. :(

Good Grief! Murphy will be back in a few days. I think the mad listener might be real, but they decided to turn it into something larger and get some press. End of story. This is a great way to convince advertisers that everyone is listening to the station to see what's going to happen. And it's working! I guarantee they will probably see a spike in the ratings over this.

And, anyone who can't read Brad's post as dripping with sarcasm is just a little dense.

It's an idiotic argument to even be having, so most of the premises will be idiotic.
Let's just say you whipped me and call it a day man. ::)

Why are so many people taking so much crap on the internets around here so seriously lately?
Make a joke, get nitpicked.
It's almost laughable. Well, it is laughable because it's the internets and there are people out there taking it as real life.
Dang just because Jack Murphy used an uncreative stunt and people called him out on it, doesn't make the internets any more serious than they were before.
I think most people here recognized it was a stunt, and most people here recognized Brad Krantz, among others, have been dealing the sarcasm cards from the top of the deck.

The internets run on sarcasm and various levels of detachment, it's not real life.
Does everything that is said in jest now have to have a [/sarcasm] marker? Well that should show you that the internets is a fairly detached place, because if you can't recognize the sarcasm in most of the posts on this thread, and a lot of others, it's because it's the internets, not real life. Here, you never really know the author well enough to critique them, apparently, some peops just infer what they want to be there and then throw their heart on to their sleeve and rail away, they know what they think they are responding to, but rarely much about the person behind it. [/observation]
