KZLA Goes Dance and Rick Dees?

Billboard Radio Monitor R&R updated it:

- Station will dump KZLA calls.

- Entire airstaff has been canned.

- Emmis is looking for new jocks.

IMO, this was a strong move for Emmis. This will be easier to sell with Power 106 (as opposed to selling a country/hip-hop combo). Dees' return is a big attention grabber, and could bode well for them. And I can see this format growing, since people seem to really be getting sick of hip-hop on one end and dreary Hot AC/Modern AC on the other. This sounds like Dance Top 40 from the early 90's. And I'm sure country will be much more successful on a suburban stick.

Rick Dees I remember used to do some kind of countdown show, i forget the title.

"Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40." He still hosts that show. I wouldn't be surprised if that show ends up at 93.9.

Rick Dees will be on the KTLA Morning Show between 7 AM and 10 AM on Friday.

There was a good piece on the Channel 4 News about the change. Patrick Healy was out at the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill concert at the Staples Center tonight. They played some of Movin 93.9. Also, showed Clear Channel trying to capitalize on the demise of KZLA by giving out cards and stickers at the concert showing that KOST plays some country music artists.

Besides KTLA Prime News at 10 and ABC 7 Eyewitness News earlier, sister stations Fox 11 News at 10 and My 13 News at 11 also had a brief piece about the change.

So it looks like Emmis got a lot of local publicity today.

"The Boomer" Joe Servantez (from the "Dance Now" days of Power 106) is the voice of Movin 93.9. And of course, Don LaFontaine www.donlafontaine.com is the voice of Rick Dees promos on Movin.

Movin 93.9, the Mix that makes you move...

Rick is back.

It is the "Movin" format from Alan Burns that is already on in Seattle.

(And we all thought he would end up At CBS or CC!)

I don't think anyone here thought The Dees would be back at CC after how unceremoniously he was let go by them.

Have fun LA with the imposter Philly 106.1, good luck you'll get tired after a few days.

Nobody is going to get tired of a station that has local legend Rick Dees as its morning superstar.

Phily 106.1 has two things against it. One, it is a Clear Channel station. Two, it has Whoopi in the morning. A disaster unto herself.

Agreed on those fronts, anything Clear Channel you've got to question

Yes... ANYTHING Clear Channel must be questioned... the biggest joke of a conglomerate there is for sure.

Rick was supposed to be the morning man at K-Earth (as hinted to on Thursday on InsideRadio.com). But he asked for too much. They even had a blueprint made up for his own studio at their new digs on Wilshire before they moved in.

Rick is hated by Clear Channel to today. And the feeling is mutual.

The perfect station to do country is the underperforming 95.9, The Fish. Analysts have been urging Salem to sell off their Fish and Praise formatted FM's, return the proceeds to the shareholders and concentrate on their News/Talk and Christian Teaching stations. The Fish's transmitter location would fit them well for this format. And it's still a family friendly format.

Good story in a Tennessee newspaper (from a Country music persective) about the switch

What's interesting is this isn't an Alan Burns consulted station, Emmis just purchased the rights to use the name "Movin". Like they couldn't come up with something better or free? Guy Zapoleon is the consultant.

Also, interesting from All Access is about meetings for another country station in L.A. They were in meetings all day at Clear Channel in Burbank Thursday. Hmmm...

Country KZLA Gives Way To Movin Format; Rick Dees To Do Mornings

Rick Dees' New Home
EMMIS COMMUNICATIONS and DEES ENTERTAINMENT have announced the launch of MOVIN 93.9, "The Mix That Makes You Move," and former KIIS-FM/LOS ANGELES morning legend RICK DEES will do morning drive.

The format change took place at 10:15a (PT) when midday personality SHAWN PARR played KEITH URBAN/Tonight I Wanna Cry. MOVIN 93.9 replaces the longtime Country format of KZLA. This leaves both NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES without Country stations -- but ALL ACCESS hears that meetings are already underway in LOS ANGELES to explore a new home for Country.

"We’re overjoyed that RICK DEES will be joining EMMIS COMMUNICATIONS and Movin 93.9,” said EMMIS VP/Programming JIMMY STEAL who will also program the station, "RICK’s passion for LOS ANGELES’ morning radio is legendary and his live & local show is a perfect fit for MOVIN 93.9. We can’t wait for him to start! He’s the perfect compliment to this exciting new format."

KZLA PD R.J. CURTIS will stay through a transitionary period, and will stay on to program KZLA's online stream and HD2 Channel.

"EMMIS is the perfect fit," said RICK DEES. "I’ve been presented with many opportunities, and the new MOVIN 93.9 gets me excited like I’ve never been before! We will have an All-Star team ready to deliver a great morning show for SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA."

EMMIS VP/Radio Division VAL MAKI said, "This is one of the most exciting opportunities we’ve seen in any radio market. The potential audience has told us that they want something new and fun. The combination of this music and RICK DEES make this the perfect answer to the needs of the marketplace. We are privileged to launch this station and I applaud the entire team."

The MOVIN 93.9 Rhythmic Pop Contemporary format is a collaboration of the EMMIS programming team, and ZAPOLEON MEDIA STRATEGIES President GUY ZAPOLEON who is the consultant. EMMIS purchased the rights to use the MOVIN' name from ALAN BURNS & ASSOCIATES. Core artists include Rhythmic Pop Contemporary stars like BEYONCE’, GWEN STEFANI, USHER, JENNIFER LOPEZ, BLACK EYED PEAS, MADONNA, JANET JACKSON, and GNARLS BARKLEY.

STEAL is in the process of assembling an airstaff. Interested applicants should apply to: CRISTINA ZOIDA for JIMMY STEAL, KPWR, 2600 W. Olive, 8th Floor, BURBANK, CA 91505. No calls or emails.

Look for a call letter change, soon. And expect marketing featuring airplane banners, bussides, viral marketing and TV ads to begin shortly.

KZLA continues to be available via Internet streaming as well as on MOVIN 93.9’s HD Radio side channel. Go to www.kzla.com for more info. The new site addresses, www.movin939.com as well as www.movin939.fm will be active, soon.

KFSH bills well enough to make Salem very happy... but yes, Country could do better.

Does anyone know if they are streaming online yet for Movin' 93.9?

Thanks!

Not yet, but Emmis does has plans for KZLA and KPWR to stream online soon. But I wouldn't hold my breath since they have talked about streaming their LA stations for some time while the competition are already streaming theirs.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Rhythmic titles start expanding as we post this.

Nah, it'll never happen.

With all the recent flipping to a rhythmic, urban and/or urban ac format, it is going to be interesting to see how all of the dust will settle. Right now some sort of rythmic or urban product is on 92.3, 93.5, 93.9, 100.3, 102.3, 102.7, 104.3, 105.9 and to a lesser extent at 94.7, correct me if I have missed a frequency....I can't keep up anymore. Any predictions of which station will die? Or will each one survive?
