Anyone remember this station? Does anyone know whatever happened to Dave Scott and Mark McClaren that used to work there?

Yep! I remember Zoom One-Oh-Four-and-a-half!
Don't know where any of the people went though.

How about KWIC 108? They picked up a lot of the old Zoom format for a time, when Zoom became KKMY.

Yes, we're all old! At that time (approximately 1978 - 1979) there were several stations that I could listen to - the aforementioned KZOM and KWIC, and if I recall there was a station in Lake Charles called Nova 104 (now KBIU 103.3, but it was 103.7 at the time). I think the call letters were KGRA. But they all had similar formats.

Ah, yes, the good old days of radio.

I used to do Graveyards there back in 1980. Then when Bobbi left night drive, I started doing it for awhile. Just wondering where everyone is now.

Ahh ZOOM....owned by KOLE at the time...and was originally KOBS owned by (and BUILT by) Charlie Kobs...homemade console and homebuilt exciter (mono) and the station sounded like kids were running it! Zoom was a much improved station..Now KKMY and sucking the big one...

pity those old days are gone....Radio in the BPT area sucks compared to what it used to be back in the 70s and early 80s...Half the FMs are trying to be Houston stations now (NONE of the PA full service FMs program for Port Arthur leaving only a LPFM to handle the job..but then PA is not what it used to be 20-30 yrs ago...I drove down through downtown PA for the 1st time in 20 yrs a while back while in the area.....EGADS!!! talk about a GHOSTtown....downtown BMT is not much better....Orange is hanging on by a thread....Lake Charles seems almost more alive than the Triangle (which aint so golden anymore)...

I dont recall Dave Scott or Mark.....I know Mike Cantu who used to work there and KAYC/KAYD in BMT is in Dallas at ABC Radio Networks and also (I think) was doing some time over on 100.3 FM before it became Jack.

....can't help but to wonderin' what happened to Don Golden (KWIC 108 "The Rock", "Zoom 104 1/2" KZOM before that.....remember him the most for those area beach clean-up efforts for several years prior to hot summers.....also, deejays like Randy Fuller, Dr. John, and Darrell Stevens of KAYC/KAYD pre-country days....Hollywood Dave from the old KHYS "Kiss-98" era.......

Yes, Don Golden. I couldn't remember his name. He used to do mornings on Zoom with Dave Scott. Dave was incredible. He left when I was there and if memory serves me right, went to California.

I remember the top of the hour back in 1981: " KZOM - Orange and the Gulf Coast. Zoom 104 1/2"

....there's a posting on this thread indicating KZOM was co-owned with KOLE; was it Walsh Communciations if memory serves right?......wonder when was it they let go of these properties.....also the last days of KWIC (FM & AM then) co-owned by, was it, Pyle Communications?.......toward its last days not only did it have its problems, not to mention if I recall, staffing dilemmas due to past and current format failures at that time.....

.......recalling KOLE's heydays during that period as a full-service station to PA.....with Robert X Brown and news anchor Sue Palmarozzi......where did they go one must wonder......

I seem to remember Robert X resurfacing on an oldies station in the triangle, either KKMY or KCOL, having a Sunday afternoon show. I think he hosted this show until his death, if I'm not mistaken.

Robert X was also on KLVI in its top40 days...I THINK after KOLE..
JJ Stone on KOLE in the 70s ended up in Baton Rouge...Charlie (his real 1st name) and I talked several times during the 80s...I THINK he was at WAFB but I dont know where he is now...Roland Ritcher, the real Chief Engineer (referred to as Jet Crash on the air) and who was also news guy and weekend DJ, is in Waco working in TV now...and also married! (took him long enough)...Rex Russell and Jay Scott and others I havent a clue about...Jay (Real name Jeff Davis) went to KLVI then KAYC for a while...then left the area in the late 70s..I THINK he went to Lufkin and then last I recall he was on KILT or KFMK in Houston before they flipped formats...
Ahh the good ole days at King KOLE.

Cant say on the owners of KOLE and KZOM...As for KWIC, there was NEVER a KWIC AM...KWIC was a FM only call..KJET 1380 (now KCRM) was their AM and a daytimer only...in fact the 1380 tower is where KWIC was before the move to Devers. I was working at KAYC/KAYD at the time when KWIC/KJET were on the air from the tower on Hwy124 and we added more "soul"/urban music at night when KJET signed off. Back in the 70s and the disco era, that was not hard to do.

Glad to read this post on KZOM-FM "Texas Rock, Zoom One-Oh-Four-And-A-Half", KOLE, KOBS and related stations.

Please see me post in this thread, thanks.

Good to see a list of where everyone is. I'll have to get in touch with a few of them. Email address' would be great. Unfortunately, I didn't make your list. I was there at KZOM from about 1980-1981. Can you guess who I am? I knew Bobbi, Dave, Mark and Larry.

guess??

Dude, you had enormous hair!
In my faded memory, it was like Franklyn Ajaye in "Car Wash".
bzzzz! :)

Yeah, well I wish I had some of it now. As I recall I was the Beatle freak (I was on the air when Lennon was shot and cried), and you were the Beach Boys Freak!

How have you been. I often think about you and the crew from those days. It's real good to hear from you!

I miss the slip cuing we used to do! Man we were good!

What I remember was Larry crying when we tossed the old homebuilt transmetter out the back door. He'd gotten so used to "tapping" on that exciter and faking the meter readings! (It's OK, Lar, the statute of limitations is up) That and the tower project when we added a couple hundred feet to the tower and damn near lost a D-8 Catapillar front loader in the Pine trees out back. Wound up with the staff dragging plastic garbage cans of concrete through the trees to pour the guy wire anchors. You just don't weld a crew together any tighter than when you do it with sweat and grit and pure damn determination!
Oh yeah, and I recall driving "faithful Spot, the wonder truck" through the flood from a hurricane. Water coming in under the door, trying to rememeber where the "road" zigged and zagged between the gate by Charlie Kobs' house and the front porch of the station. Larry had been on the air for something like two days 'cause nobody had a vehicle that could swim. Mark McClaren, I think had just made it out and Larry got stuck, couldn't leave, and so just stuck it out til I could bring groceries!!!
ZOOM and KOLE were my first Chief Engineer gig after assisting with the major rebuild of the KHYS/KPAC studios at the foot of the rainbow bridge and doing weekends on "KISS-98" before the disco rollover. Crear Channel only had, what, six stations then??? Wish they'd offered me stock options!!!
Enough for now. Gonna go brush some rust off my '46 Dodge pickup resurrection project.

Things are good! Do you get my email at your classx address??

I definitely remember your Beatles obsession, it seems like you had all the records. I remember that you were looking for a Beatles 45 with Yellow Submarine on one side, and "Thingumabob" on the other side, because it was listed in the Beatles discography that came with the 1962-1966 album. This turned out to be misinformation. Here's a picture of the real "Thingumabob" single.

http://rockshow.com.br/colaboration...andthingumabobyellowsubmarine/thingumabob.htm

I shared these posts on KZOM with the original ZOOM crew, and it has resulted in a flurry of correspondence. It made everybody nostalgic at the same time.
I hope anyone reading this thread with ZOOM anecdotes or info on past staff members will chime in.

thanks,
Larry
