KZON 101.5 JAMZ

Inside Radio today says that the KZON / KZZP race is close -- can someone fill me in? What's the new morning show? Did they do TV/Outdoor or any outside marketing? Cash contest? What are they doing that's working there against KZZP?

Unfortunately, the music all sounds the same. Between KMVA, KKFR, KZON and KZZP, the music sounds more similar than different. I hate hearing Rihanna four times in less than two hours.

Over the past week, I'm pretty sure I've heard "Only Girl in the World" playing simultaneously on 2 (maybe 3?) of those stations, at least two separate times. Great song but it's quickly burning out.

It's sad that being in a larger market, you would expect stations to take more risks with music and not have a playlist sounding identical to one in a smaller market which consists of the same 15 artists over and over and over and over and over...

Question for those who were familiar with the format and lived in the market back in the late 80's and early 90's: When KZZP, KKFR, and KOY-FM were all battling each other, was there as much overlap musically between the 3 stations?

I was in the area in the early 90's...

I remember when KOY would occasionally play artists like Cause & Effect, the Shamen...etc

I LOVED KKFR around '95 when they were still hip/hop with a dancier edge...

Yes... at least until KZZP tried to become WNCI and started playing Stephen Bishop and Phil Collins at night. Then you'd hear Me So Horny on Power and Y-95 and Genesis on KZZP. (And that's how you go from 10.2 to 2.9 in one book!)

But prior to that, you had a pretty good shot at hearing the same Janet Jackson, Bobby Brown, or Paula Abdul song on all three stations if not at the same time, within 15 minutes of each other.

The reason I like KZON the most is because they play more of what I want to hear in addition to having the best on-air personalities.

In other words, I notice differences between KKFR, KZON, and KZZP. While very similar to each other, I do notice KKFR leans more urban sounding than KZON, which is strictly rhythmic pop hits. KZZP is closer to the top 40 sound, although they lean rhythmic and sound CLOSE to KZON themselves. If you want to hear hit music by Daughtry and other pop rock artists, KZZP is the best bet, and is probably the most likely place you might even have a chance to hear Sick Puppies out of all three stations. Not sure why KMVA didn't add it, but I'm not even sure if I should bring KMVA into this at this point since... well, you know... as of right now, no one knows how long they'll be around.

Ok I've gotta go, and I didn't proofread anything, so whatever typo's and mistakes exist I will not know until later.

This is what I have issue with:

KZON

2:04 - Rihanna "Only Girl"
2:34 - Rihanna "Take a Bow"
3:07 - Rihanna "What's My Name"
3:31 - Rihanna "Only Girl"
4:14 - Rihanna "What's My Name"
4:53 - Rihanna "Only Girl"
5:08 - Rihanna "What's My Name"

and it starts again:

6:36 - Rihanna "Only Girl"
6:58 - Rihanna "Who's That Chick"

Sounds similar to how KAMP, KPWR, and even KIIS sets out their high rotation playlist.

KZON has a tight playlist (just like KKFR), but KZON's mixshows have a lot more variety than all other Phoenix (current) music stations mixshows.

I should point out, though, that just because I notice clear differences between the stations, that doesn't mean that the average listener also does, so in reality, what I notice is rather irrelevant.

Unfortunately, that is not saying much as there aren't really any good mixshows to listen to in Phoenix these days. Hopefully that will change.

Musically, KZON seems to be the closest equivalent of what KKFR was in that era. There isn't much of the actual "dance" product on the station, but they play enough "dancy" pop and R&B selections to fit that role. They aren't as adventurous as the current KKFR on the hip-hop, and there's no pop/rock on the station as far as I can tell.

P!NK and NEON TREES are in regular rotation. Sometimes 3OH!3 is still used as a recurrent. Orianthi is long gone abd missing in action from KZON now.

And KKFR played Alanis Morrisette's "Ironic" in the Spring of 1996 (probably because KZZP had just returned as a Modern AC several weeks prior). Close enough :)

From early 93 to early 97, Power (KKFR) was top 40, being that there was no top 40 in the market. Then KPTY came in to the market and went live in mid to late 96, forcing KKFR to change format. It also ment pretty much the end of Bruce Kelly. I know that after Power he went to 105.9 and back to KZZP for a bit, but both of those stints combined lasted less then a year.

Actually I think the opposite is true. In a large market - especially one such as this with 3 or more stations fighting for the same piece of the ratings pie - you'd expect stations to take LESS risks with music.

With the advent of the PPM, you've got about a nanosecond to convince one of the People with a Portable Meter to keep listening to the station they (hopefully) chose to tune in at that moment.

If the "People" in question is a typical listener, then they want to hear their favorite song NOW, and they'll tune away if they don't. Right now, for example, the favorite song of a pretty significant portion of that demo is likely either sung by Rihanna, or features Rihanna, or sounds like it might be a Rihanna song.

Conversely, if the song in question is not any of those things, or even worse is a completely unfamiliar song that the listener has never heard (the PD decided to "take a risk"), then you've got tune out.

Please post this in the Atlanta section!

I wont even say anything more. What I originally had written here, I was wise enough to delete... and I'll just leave it at that.

If you think Phoenix top 40 and rhythmic radio is no good, then... I don't know what to tell ya. Phoenix hit music radio (and even our soft ac, amongst other things) is/are HEAVEN compared to.. some places.

This Thanksgiving... I'm just thankful to be within the market I'm currently in....
Anyway, enjoy your weekend everyone.

This is the sad state of radio.

With that being said, that Edward Maya track should've been forbidden! ;D
Well... it still seems to be somewhere in the U.S.

Anyway, what I like about WKQI, WPOW, KPWR, XHTO, WBBM, KIIS, WDRE, KMVQ, and many others I may have forgotten at the moment is the fact that they all take risks. They've all found the perfect "loophole" to do it.... KZON also knows the "loophole", although they may not go as far as the stations I've listed above.

Well since we are still talking about KZON, I might as well add in (more of) my two cents;

Well, there are two places I think Knick Knack would be PERFECT at, especially for his style... and this is nothing new - I've been thinking this even way before I first signed into these boards.

AND I AM 100% GLAD HE LANDED AT THE #1 PLACE OUT OF THE TWO RIGHT NOW!

He's found his true home!

(Yes, I know I'm many many months late on posting this here, but... better late than never!)

Anyway, looking forward to the last few hours of tonight's mix. If nothing's changed over the past few late night Friday's, then that new music is about to drop again... somewhere between 1-3am. It's going to be BUZZIN! MANN, I CAN'T WAIT! ;D (ok I know that "joke" flew right over just about 94.5% of people's heads here..).
