John Hogan of Cc does resemble the "emperor" a bit.

...the format is pretty much confirmed as a blend of 60% classic rock/southern rock and 40% country. It should be on the air Monday or Tuesday.

Let's flip those percentages and draw a comparison from another market to illustrate this kind of thing in reverse. I present a quote from a press release that appeared on the San Francisco board:

"The new 95.7 The Wolf went on the air on March 1, featuring country hit-makers such as Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Toby Keith, as well as cross-over artists Michelle Branch, Sheryl Crow, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp and more."

Now let's see...that's maybe 60% country and 40% rock (or partly rock, anyway). Does this sound about right? I guess not. The percentages may be off, but so is the mix. Michelle Branch? Solo or Santana? Is this a San Francisco thing or is it what our own Wolf is going to be when Sebastian finishes the mutation destruction, I mean, tweaking of the format?

I could have posted this in the recent thread called "What Happened to Country Radio?" but it seemed to fit better in this, the "What The Hell is Happening With KZPS?" thread. Just what Dallas-Fort Worth needs, isn't it? Not one, but two full-time, full-power train wreck stations. Pardon me if I'm not excited about the prospect of that.

michelle branch teamed up with another hot blonde singer and switched to country. the group is called the wreckers. some of their music actually sounds country. they're not bad at all.

Oops, "solo" was a slip, considering I've heard some of The Wreckers music. But I actually wasn't aware of her official "switch," thinking it was more of a semi-crossover. Hmmm. So Bon Jovi has "gone country" too? Can't wait for the new country remix CD from Tom Petty! And you can't beat Classic Boston Country. Okay, I'm kidding. But we'll see if the 'ZPS audience has a sense of humor, right?

Interesting: http://www.lonestarfm.com/

Cross Canadian Ragweed

What does a website and a playlist for a couple of Bryan-College Station area radio stations (simulcasters) have to do with KZPS? The only thing in common is that one of them happens to be on 92.5. If you followed the lead in one of the previous posts by searching for "Cool 92.5" you'd find the site for KCOL, an oldies station in Beaumont-Port Arthur owned by Clear Channel.

Here's the skinny - The flip happens at midnight tonight. "Lone Star 92.5" is a hybrid classic rock/copuntry format. According to the Star-Telegram a smapling of the playlist is:
ZZ Top
Hank Williams, Jr
Willie Nelson (also the voice of the station)
Jimmy Buffet
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Drive By Truckers
Old 97s
Station will be jock free for the first week then in a Q102-esque fashion... mornings with Bo & Jim, Afternoons with Redbeard and nights will Jon Dillon. Gone are Jack "Locker Room Lindstrom and Cindy Scull.

will post this again:

now with your details jeff, its even more convincing that.....

Long term this sounds more boring than that tree which no one heard falling in the woods. Its bad enough programmers feel the need to fragment formats into narrow slivers of over played, over tested songs. Now this sounds more niche and less of a choice for DFW. Old man presentation matched with songs that are already on my ipod...whats going to make anyone tune in? a sleepy Merle Haggard or Hank Jr. update from Redbeard? His dry uninspired presentation wasnt enough to keep him on Q102 10 years ago. The novelty of hearing him wont be enough for more than a few trends, if that.

Prediction: 3-6 months and ZPS will drift back to "more of the same" with an older and thinner fragmentation of a format that attracts an audience even closer to death than ZPS already had. Good luck on those 25 to 54's. Cant see many people under 54 being enthusiastic about this. Sounds like there wont be anyone left there under 55. Is that the median age of DFW now? Never thought we'd see the day that the Bone sounded good....wait , sorry, that day hasnt happened yet either.

I think this format will eat into a little of Wolf's current artists like, Bonnie Rait, Janis Joplin, John Couger, Willie, Hank. Look for Wolf to further drop once KZPS signs on with this format described by Jeff.

Truly amazing to see two huge signals go to this non-mainstrean direction. While KVIL struggles to find their identity between Hot AC and AC and the Wolf playing non-country 25% of the time, KLUV and KSCS are gonna be big winners. The only stations playing familiar music 100% of the time in their formats.

Yes laffer, you're right. The big winners here will be KSCS AND KLUV. AND even JACK with the amount of classic rock they have been playing lately. They must be celebrating already. Does anyone think the WOLF will give up the rock or will the Bone pick up enough to prevent a format change?

The Bone is gaining at least one new listener... me.
Goodbye KZPS, nice knowin' ya. Hello Bone.

Clear Channel maybe about to do a KVET 98.1 here in Dallas after seeing KVET continually scoring in the Top 2 or 3 in Austin trend after trend. While KZPS is not going KVET completely at first, my bet is they will within a few months. In fact if they do they will have a Top Hybrid KVET Country format in DFW...then to compliment that I can see them flipping one of the other cluster stations to Mainstream Country....I can see Clear Channel owning most of the Top spots in the ratings with that game plan. We'll see if this first Hybrid KZPS Rock/Country mix evolves into a true KVET sound within a year.

Link to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram article referenced above for more details...

It looks like basically KZPS-HD2 "Lone Star 92.5" format is moving to the main channel, but will have DJs now.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out...it will be the first time a full market signal carries some of this music. KHYI and KFWR would have some of the Texas country content, but don't really have city grade signals into Dallas County, Denton County, and much of Tarrant County, so most people don't hear them. It appears it will have little overlap with KSCS, KTYS, and KPLX.

I wonder if there will be room for KZPS, KSCS, KTYS, and KPLX...we had 4 full-market country stations before (KSNN, KSCS, KPLX, and KYNG). Not sure 4 will make it this time...I would think KTYS would be the one to go; ABC has never put much into it and it seems to only exist to be a flanker for KSCS. Previously, some posted here they would like to see ABC's True Oldies (50s-early 70s satellite oldies format) on there; classic rock KFGL 100.7 Abilene has changed to that format (while in range today, I never heard any DJs...just Scott Shannon liners...is that how that format is full-time?).

I wonder if KDBN would consider dumping W&J in mornings (probably not)...if they are going to be the lone classic rock station, why not provide it full-time instead of a morning talk show that apparently few listen to anyway?

If it means I won't have to hear "Dude Looks Like A Lady", or Boston, or some lame hair-band poprock hit, I'm all for it.
Interesting to see Redbeard's name in this. At Farmaid, (the one at texas stadium) when he came on stage and was introduced, the people actually cheered! I'd never seen that before. Usualy DEEJAYS get booed.
My fondest hope is that Red, Bo and Jon will be given a chance to select some of the tunes. I think they could pick some tasty stuff. Kudos to Clear for at least trying...
