LA-610 or M610?

here we go again Jeff. How much is one of the Seventh circle audio already assembled? Love my Brauner phantom, just a great sounding mic.glad vodood made that posting.

I still like the M610 a lot..it adds a tube warmth to the Brauner mic that I now like..the Senheiser 416 got a lot of extra kick and (some) added warmth from the 610. It is a solid preamp that won't dissapoint unless you are a massive audio purist..It does add a little colour, but it is adjustable..The Seventh Circle Audio (SCA) preamp is a very hot amp..very very clean, clinically clean and quiet and BIG sounding, but AFAIK not a lot of headroom..hot mics need a pad inserted..however I just completed a big TV project with it, and loved it. I needed to get these. Takes about 5 weeks to get them built and shipped. About 1000 bucks for the single module with the one-unit rack/power unit that can accomodate 8 modules. SCA makes a Neve clone and an API and Millenia also The 610 can be had for less..and it is good. If you like a money saver, check the Groove Tubes "The Brick" HUGE sound..nice tubey sound, and cheap at about 350 bucks a throw. I add a tad upper mids, and it rocks for not a lot of cash

Jeff,

Since we both know your addiction won't end here, you ought to pick up of the API clone modules. I bet you'd like it a lot. API pres sound similar to the M1. I don't want to say the API's sound bigger...That's not the right word. 'Closer' is the word I would use. I have a friend that would describe it as being able to see the talent's tongue coming out of the center of the woofer. They're very clean, but I would say slightly less neutral than the M1. I have a hard time choosing a favorite.

Since you've got some openings in your box, you ought to be able to get your fix pretty cheap for awhile. ;D Would love to hear a shootout between the modules.

Jeesh this is absurd..how much more of this can I take? google Seventh Circle Audio preamp..and you'll find the specs. I am getting these pre-assembled by SCA. So far the Jenson twin-turbo with the 990 op-amps sound great.

Jeff, when you find the pre that sounds best with the Brauner Phantom C please post it.i've looked and read about them all and having a hard time choosing.i think the c84 might be closer to the True or Grace pre.The Jensen twin turbo with the 990c may be the one.But th e Neve clone looks hot too.See, what you've started.ha...

I am gonna try the API in the rack..apparently there are quite a few of these SCA rack users out there, and you can usually sell a module for what you paid for it if it doesn't suit.

Menotti..do you find your Brauner to be "hot" I found a few posts on gearslutz that said that the "mic" clips, and can distort..Hadn't heard that until last week..I was doing a really high energy automotive spot, and it DID seem to clip. TURNED OUT that the mic was overdriving the preamp. There was simply too much signal going into the pre! I had been afraid that the pre was overdriving my processor..so (as I mentioned in another post) I bought a small inline pad. (SHURE makes a great one) I pulled it out of the line between the preamp and the processor and put it between the MIC and the PRE. at -15db it smoothes it out great..and the SCA preamps have nealry 85db of available gain so I could balance it out fine..It is now just superb sounding. The SURE inline pad doesn't interfere with the phantom power. You're right it's a great mic..and you got a whale of a deal!

Have not experienced any clipping, but most of my stuff is soft sale.clothing stores, banks, supermarkets, etc.Let me know which SCA you settle on and i'll give it a go.But should i need do a high energy what is the model of that shure pad and where did you get it.I know this mic will shake and bake if needed.Man,it has one heck of a warm sweet spot.

Jeff, i found the Shure pad, A15AS 39 bucks at Full Compass..

Better price than B&H..that's the one..and you are right on about the sweet spot..for soft sell it is just about as good as it gets..AND with the pad in line you won't overdrive the input section on any preamp with any delivery. It will have just about the same consistean output level as most other mics..My wife said i could probably just hook a set of earbuds to the audio terminals and you could hear it with out a preamp..funny woman.
