Reactions:
KFI - Still firing on all cylinders. Not many stations get boycotted into first place. Excellent work National Hispanic Media Coalition!
KIIS - Still CHR King, but competition is really starting to take its toll, particularly from KPWR as was noted above. But closest competitor AMP is down too, so maybe it is just that the format is down for awhile?
KOST - didn't take my advice to go all-Christmas on Halloween, but perhaps they should have as they jumped from 3.5 to 3.9 in November.
KRTH - Consistently getting the job done. The station is still way too repetitious for me, but Jhani knows what he is doing as usual.
KCBS/KAMP/KROQ - KROQ is steady, but Jack and Amp on a serious downward track. Jack is now tied with The Sound. Ouch!! I am sure they are doing much better in demo, but this cannot be a good sign. Is Weatherly losing the magic touch?
KHHT - recent ratings improvement must not be a fluke. It may very well be time to change the long-standing prediction to... KFI 98.7
KNX - seems to have been improving of late. I've not listened in a long time, are they doing anything different?
KLOS - slightly increasing share but steadily losing cume. I know they bill well, but that is primarily a Mark and Brian thing, the rest of the day the station simply doesn't sound very good. I am their target audience; I love my classic rock and want a good classic rock station. I wish KLOS could be that station, but they ceased being that a long time ago. Losing Ladd not going to help. I know he didn't bring much in the way of ratings, but he did bring them sorely needed cred, which is measured long-term, not short-term. I think they'll regret this decision in the end unless they are intentionally undoing the station, and he was just the first piece to be moved, which is a definite possibility.
KSWD - They get a lot of heat from me in this space because I know they can be a better station than they are, but it is obvious that it is run by people who care about the music and do their best to be as creative as they can with the format without going so far that they lose share. Their job is not easy so they deserve a tip of the hat for hanging in there. I predicted a few years back that they might outlast KLOS in the end. It sounded pretty preposterous at the time, but it is a very real possibility now. They better hope so, because they've plateaued and I don't see how they can take the next step with both Jack and KLOS around and KRTH doing so well.
KPPC - Up. Must be the station of choice with the Occupy crowd. Guess they're not too cool to wear personal people meters after all.
KFSH - They do really well with the religious programming on a signal that only covers about half the market.
KSPN/KLAC - KSPN is taking KLAC out behind the shed for a good old fashioned butt whoopin'. Not sure how that has happened since they haven't had their prized possession of Laker basketball. I would be interested to know how the ratings break out between Jim Rome and Colin Cowheard. Their shows only overlap for an hour, but I think they are two of the best in the business, so the head to head, such as it is, would be enlightening. I suspect the real competition is in afternoon drive though.
KTLK - Gotta hand it to them, they're still on the air. And it's still all Bush's fault.
KLAC - They better hope there's a whole lotta Dodger fans waiting to tune in next season.
KABC - It's hard to believe how this station could perform worse and worse every month, but they do. KFI beating them now 5 to 1. This is the very definition of insanity (doing the same unsuccessful thing over and over again and expecting a different result). As I have said before, I am a huge Larry Elder fan, but his 9:00 am show is simply unlistenable.
KFWB - As bad as KABC is, KFWB is that much worse. I'd rather hear polka music than their non-news offerings. And their schedule doesn't make any sense. They're a bit news, a bit business, a bit right-wing (Ingrahm) a bit RINO (Smirconish), and a bit specialty programming. Its like someone took a blender to four other stations, and took the worst of the results and put them on one station.
KCSN - moved the needle from "-" to "0.0" to "0.1" - Progress! - Arbitron says they have a cume of 70,000. They had 1,000 listeners combined at the two Tom Petty shows this last month, which according to my math, means 1.4% of the audience got to see the show! I do hope Sky can make this work. It is a fun little station and I enjoy hearing it, when I can actually hear it.
That's it. I don't comment on Spanish-language stations since I don't know Spanish, or listen to the stations, so what could I add? Others here can provide that commentary.
