Lady Gaga in decline?

So I guess one could also say "Pussycat Dolls in Decline?"

They're already passe. When's the last time they had a hit? 2007?

The Pussycat Dolls had a hit in 2009 but it wasn't very big. They haven't been "in" since 2006-07, and were never anywhere close to being as big as Lady Gaga was in 2009 and 2010.

Lady Gaga's next album will be pivotal. If it doesn't do any better than Born This Way without a doubt she is past her peak.

Are there going to be any new singles from BTW, or is it done?

Maybe she should go back to a sound more like she had on "The Fame"...the simple, dance-pop "fun" songs - I appreciate that she's tried some different styles on the latest album, but it hasn't done as well for her.

I wish she would. Her songs had much more mass appeal on the Fame and the Fame Monster. Poker Face, Bad Romance, Just Dance, and Paparazzi were some of the most catchy songs of all time.

I wonder how many people once thought the same thing about Britney, Eminem, or even Kelly Clarkson.....

Well Britney so far is comparable to Lady Gaga because she clearly peaked during the time of her second album. Her third was still pretty popular but after that, she was but a tabloid joke until she somewhat made a comeback with Circus in 2009.

Eminem on the other hand didn't start declining until the Encore album, which was his fifth album.

Was "circus" a bigger hit than "I wanna go", or is it still too early to tell? I don't remember how much "circus" was played, but it seems like "I wanna go" was very heavily played in 2011, especially during the summer. Maybe "womanizer" was a bigger hit though, and I guess Britney's 2009 album had more longer lasting releases than her last one. I don't think "I wanna go" will turn out to be nearly as big as "toxic" was.

There is no doubt she is in decline. She was the hottest thing in pop culture a year or two ago but not now. It's surprising how quickly this took place and it hasn't really hit most people yet, but it happened.

I wonder if "Judas" hurt her career, it might have been over the top. Or "You and I" might have drifted too far from her dance sound and her core audience lost interest..or it could just be that pop audiences are fickle.

When she releases a new album it will get plenty of airplay but she will still be past her peak.

Womanizer, Circus, Radar, I Wanna Go, etc don't come close to being as big as "Baby One More Time" and "Oops I Did It Again" were, so yeah even though she is still relevant she is past her peak. Her more recent successes also come after 5 years of nothing.

She's still a tabloid joke. Her music now is in a niche market, which is on par with Cher fans.

How exactly is 3 top 5 singles from her (Britney Spears) last album and a huge concert tour in the "niche market"? She is just as big at CHR radio as she has been in years. Turn on "the Voice" and "American Idol" and you'll see dozens of singers only hoping to fall into that "niche".

Consensus is not, nor has it ever been a certifiable measure of quality. For the recording industry, it is merely an indicator of whatever sound happens to be popular at the moment. Haven't you noticed how nearly all American Idol male vocalists sound the same, singing in raspy, throaty tenors, while many of the female contestants emulate Mariah Carey's exaggerated amd bouncy vocal stylings?

Its funny how Britney has actually put out her best music in the last few years.

Yes those songs were great which put her back on the radio. But no matter high she charted in her comeback I would still argue she is past her peak. As much airplay as those songs received less people think or talk about Britney than they did when she was a new artist in the late 90s.

I agree that she probably put out her best music recently. And with the nature of CHR today after 5 years any artist is deem "past their peak".
