Lana Wilder rejoins "Corm and the Coach"

Lana Wilder is returning to radio, rejoining her old mates "Corm and the Coach". A press release has been issued announcing the move. Check out the unusual end of the release, where the person who wrote it takes a pot-shot at Lana's previous employer/station as being "once-popular but now ratings-challenged". That's not quite the definition of "taking the high road", but it likely does indicate that relations between the principals involved on both sides are something less than warm and fuzzy.

And here's my question: if big OTA signal Star 92.9 is "ratings-challenged", will NSNSportnet/"Corm and the Coach" show up in the ratings at all, given their non-traditional broadcasting platform? Does Arbitron even measure outlets like that? Someone with more knowledge than me about current ARB measurement practices will have to answer that question.

Popular Champlain Valley Radio Personality Lana Wilder Returns to Broadcasting on Corm and the Coach
Longtime, popular morning DJ Lana Wilder is returning to “morning radio” and resuming her spot as co-host to Burlington’s Favorite Sons – Corm & the Coach.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) – Dec 13, 2010 – Burlington, VT – Longtime, popular morning DJ Lana Wilder is returning to “morning radio” and resuming her spot as co-host to Burlington’s Favorite Sons – Corm & the Coach. Vermont Internet sports broadcaster Northeast Sports Network (NSNSports.net) will begin broadcasting the heritage Champlain Valley radio show with the return of former co-host Lana Wilder in mid-December with audio and video stream with additional broadcasting platforms to follow.

The award-winning heritage morning show features host Steve Cormier and co-host, Tom Brennan, former UVM Mens Basketball coach. To the delight of longtime Corm and the Coach fans, the return of co-host Lana Wilder to the show in her role as siren to her male counterparts also marks her return to broadcasting after a brief hiatus. Prior to this, Lana served as host of a morning show on a once popular but now ratings-challenged family station in Burlington.

“I’m excited to be back with Corm and Coach after all this time. It’s the perfect recipe to create great morning radio and have some fun along the way.” said Wilder. “Having been part of the show for so long, I missed being away from the boys and the listeners. I’m definitely looking forward to this, especially in what will eventually be a multi-media format. ”

For nearly eight years, listeners in the Champlain Valley woke to the jokes, interviews and entertaining banter of Corm, Coach and Lana Wilder. With celebrity guests, coverage of local issues and events, contests, giveaways and pranks, the show routinely ranked among the top in the market. Moving forward, the show will continue to entertain with witty conversation, great guest interviews and discussions about current, topical events and happenings.

The morning show duo announced in November it was working with Internet Broadcaster NSN to explore multimedia options for the show. The show, Corm, Coach and Lana Too, will begin with Internet audio and video stream on NSNSports.net, adding additional broadcast media along the way.

NSNSports.net is the broadcast leader for Vermont sports, featuring statewide high school and college sports as well as sports talk shows. As the initial broadcaster launching Corm, Coach and Lana too, NSN will continue to develop the comprehensive multimedia broadcast platform.

Does it seem to anyone else that these two (more Corm because he is an egomaniac) just can't let go? They are going to internet "radio". Does anyone actually believe they will build up an audience? It really is sad. Times change, just let go and stop trying to recreate the magic that was there 15 years ago. There is a thread over on the Boston board called "When To Hang The Headphones Up". I would suggest that Corm take a look at that.

Blah, blah, blah arrogance. Blah, blah, blah Corm should quit.

Whoever started that "hang up the headphones thread" is a ******. Seriously, what is the effing matter with you radio people? I've never heard of another industry where people suggest that other people in the same line of work should quit. Are you all really that desperate to keep a job where you barely make minimum wage and get laid off all the time and move all over the country? I don't get it. I did radio all the way through high school. I look back and think "why on God's green Earth did I want to do this as a career?" Much as I rip the X around here, at least that place taught me the hard way that I shouldn't do this full-time.

But I'm a 27 year old with no wife or kids. I've got nothing to lose. Corm's got a family, man. I'm not rooting against him. Why should any of you? Is anybody going to give me a sincere heartfelt answer to that question, or is everybody going to turtle and then rip him again 3 months later?

EDIT: Well, maybe not a ******...the guy seems to be talking about "when should a person themselves realize they shouldn't do this anymore?" But I've seen posters suggest "oh, he should quit" or "oh, he sucks" or "he's been hanging on too long" and I'm like "why?" They're still paying him...take money. It's the manager's job to fire you, not for you to quit.

As in the past you are quite quick to stand up and defend Corm. I am wondering what is going on here. What is your connection to him? Never a critical thing to say, only staunch defense.

Also, you always make the claim that the radio business is a terrible, miserable business to be in and you can't make money in it. Maybe YOU can't but I am living proof that the radio business can be quite lucrative. The good ones succeed and the mediocre ones, not so much.

Many radio personalities have had to go this route. I don't see how many of their fans are going to be able to listen to them since many are probably too poor to have computers(not meant as a slam). Not everyone in the Burlington area has money.

Lana is a great person and her loyalty to her "boys" is commendable. She got shafted by Barlow.

Good luck to them.

I happen to know that she didn't get shafted at all. The fact of the matter was that she wanted to come in, do a 4 hour airshift and then go home. She didn't like doing things outside of the station, she was frequently gone and it was no secret her partner was getting fed up and he was the real personality of that show. As far as the internet goes it's three people just trying to keep it going when it's over. If they are such great personalities and so well listened to then how come no other radio station in the market has brought them onboard to "cash in" on their popularity? I'll answer that for you. They were #8 in the morning when they quit Champ. It was already over back then. The new venture won't affect anyone at all.
Also...real class putting down your former station in a press release about Lana...basically saying Star is ratings challenged. Really? You looking at the same books I am?

It seems this post is skewing towards these folks not being marketable in radio anywhere because they were #8 in Burlington or some such thing. I realize these guys have roots and don't wish to move, but for the record, just because you're no longer successful in one market doesn't mean you couldn't be in another. No reason to "hang up the headphones" if you can be transient.

They(Corm)have a rep for being, um, "difficult".

You're right, I am surprised that Corm, at least, hasn't tried to get employment elsewhere. They must love Burlington, I guess.

Did you ever work with him? Did he ever call you a ***** on the job?

At ones who don't work directly with/for him? Oooooooooooooooookay.............

I am certain he has never called me a hyphenhyphenhyphen.

If he ever swore at me, I would give it right back to him, as I know he would not be traumatized by it. I have been cussed out by some of the best and biggest in the business. Sticks and stones, ya know? If it's too much for you to take, you should try a career less intense and performance driven.

Right? I lost count of all the times I got hit with a zinger where I worked:

"You fool!"

"You stupid f---!"

"You crackhead!"

"You degenerates!"

"Are you high?" (his magnum opus)

"They're f--- ups!" (regarding me and another employee in front of a third employee, which I overheard)

"Are you familiar with the expression 'how many astronauts did you kill today?"

Reminds me of Jean Shepherd's narration of "A Christmas Story": "He worked in profanities the way other artists worked in oils or clay. It was his true medium."
