Larry Aiken passed on. I remember he was first guy to hold the 7:15 to Midnight shift on KQV . Before that evenings were two shifts.

I worked with him at KQV. I remember his first night there. He later went on to promote concerts....I think back in Evansville, Indiana. Before he returned to Ind., he brought his friend Byron Zint in to do the all night show when Jim McLaughlin went into the army.

When did Chuck Brinkman arrive? My memory is fuzzy. I know Quinn was there by 1967 cause he had that shift when I moved to NC in 1968.

Chuck arrived at KQV in Sept, 1960. He was on overnights originally. He went to the Army for a short time. He returned in August 1962 as Larry Aiken returned to Evansville, Indiana. Chuck moved into the 7:15 - midnight time slot at that time. Quinn arrrived in August 1967. It's all on the KQV Timeline page of my KQV website.

I believe that the ABC bloc was still on when I returned to KQV in 1964. It may have been modified somewhat, but that period is still a blur. I had left in 1961 to work in radio overseas for 3 years and alot had changed in that time.....including the style of music.

Who do you remember in that 45 minute period? I know that Howard Cosell and Chris Shenkel each did sports. In fact, Cosell did his show from KQV several times. He was great to work with. Edward P. Morgan did a 15 minute commentary at 7PM. Aside from those guys, I can't remember.

I don't remember who was in that block as I usually flipped to WEEP, KDKA, Porky, or WMCK. However, I sure wonder who you are? Do you remember the architectural firm that designed the fishbowl studios?

When ABC split the networks in 1968 and the ABC Contemporary format was born, the newsblock and Don McNeil's Breakfast Club were history. McNeil was shuffled off to the ABC Entertainment network as I recall.

I don't remember the name of the firm, but I may be able to find it in my junk pile. We were on one of the upper floors at the Chamber of Commerce Bldg. I remember my first day in the floor level studios. It was quite exciting. Our transmitter supervisor constructed the color-organ which blinked with the audio. We had two Ampex tape machines. (we got rid of the RCA tape decks) We also had a Presto disc cutting lathe for all commercials and promos. We actually used 4 turntable for each studio.

Whoever was on the air hung up his name sign so the "viewers" knew who we were. I don't have mine anymore. In fact, I think they painted it over and used it for the guy who replaced me. Who Knows!

The firm was Liff & Justh ( a local firm) . If you were on the air then, you must be :

1) Jim Mclaughlin
2) Roy Elwell
3) Chuck Daugherty
4) Keive Berman

I don't know if any of them are still around, but I know Dave Scott, Lee Vogel, and Henry DaBecco are gone. I remember on Sundays they used pre-recorded shows by the 6 regular jocks instead of week-end guys. If you are somebody else who broadcast on KQV that early into their being top 40, memory fails me.

If you are really one the origional Funlovin 5+1, it is really cool, groovey, and totally boss to be talking to you. These guys were on every minute I was anywhere except in school. I'm gettin goosebumps and I ain't playin Frankie or Annette on the little pink 45 rpm record player. They signed off at 12AM on Mondays like other stations then so there was no extra overnight guy either.

Dick Drury?
Sam Holman?
Dex Card?
Jim Gearhart?

Dick Drury and Sam Holman have died, too. I don't think Dex Card ever worked at KQV, but Dexter Allen did.

Why don't you send the mystery poster a PM? Maybe he'd be willing to tell you who he is in private but doesn't want it on the board.

Dex Card worked at WLS. Sam Holman worked at a lot of places including KQV & 13Q in Pittsburgh, he never worked at KHJ. That was Sam Riddle. hypwr is a former KQV engineer, not a KQV jock.

Bossjock is correct. The News Scope segment and Breakfast Club both ended on KQV December 31, 1967. As always, all of this is on my KQV website. This is the direct link to that page. http://user.pa.net/~ejjeff/mxpower.html

When Sam Holman left KQV for WIL in St. Louis, he was replaced by Roy Elwell. We also had a guy for a few months named Tall Paul Dean.

Sam later moved to Milwaukee and then joined Bridal Fair as their main rep. When Cecil Heftel bought JAS Sam came back to the Burgh. Cec sent Sam and me to St. Louis to look at a station that he was interested in. That was about the last time I saw him.....1973.

Getting Sam Holman mixed up with Sam Riddle is unforgivable. And Dex Card mixed up with somebody else named Dex. I guess I'm not the definitive expert. But my date got me into the KQV studios during an overnight show and the jock let us in cause both my date and the jock knew I was totally a DJ groupie airhead. Like wow. Seeing Walk and Don't Walk from the inside! OMG.

Chuck Brinkman and Larry Aiken were good friends back in the day. I will try and get Chuck to post and clear up some of the confusion about dates. He has an amazing memory for such things. He can tell you things like Henry Dabecco's street address!

I knew Henry had a brother Frank and Henry liked to hang out at Bubbles and Shermans on Fifth Ave. just north of downtown. Usually late a night.

I arrived at KQV on December 5th, 1960. I went to the army as a reservist on November 1st, 1961, returning August 7, 1962 to the 7:15 to midnight shift, vacated by the late Larry Aiken. I would really like to know how and when he died. We were very good friends.
