OMG--------this is soooo like bitchin way cool. I was 15 when I first like heard Chuck Brinkman and OMG-----------Maybe I can like talk to him? I feel like a teen-ager again? I'm flippin out here and it's like no joke? In 1962 I was like parkin like at night in Schenley Park and going to Weinstein's Deli and a movie like at the Manor? Chuck was like you know never off the radio. We drove at 100 mph up like Negley Hill with Chuck in the dashboard. OMG!!!!!!

The Fun Lovin' 5 Chuck is referring to included ... Hal Murray, Steve Rizen, Dave Scott, Chuck Brinkman, and Dex Allen. Anybody else previously were not the Fun Lovin' 5. At one time the KQV jocks were referred to as the Fabulous Five plus One, but that was long before. The Fun Lovin 5 was coined by John Rook.

Chuck actually was caught up in the payola scandal. When he was fired by KQV he went to WKWK in Wheeling with Lou Dickey, who had just purchased the station. Chuck programmed it after the KQV format and it took off. The class IV station's were limited to 250 watts back then, and as WWSW did earlier, beat the daylights out of a 50 KW blowtorch (WWVA).
He may have gone to WIP after that.

Hal answered a blind ad in Broadcasting Magazine for a DJ in a major market. In his cover letter he just blasted John Rook. He wrote that he was the worse PD in the business, he didn't know what he was doing, he didn't understand the music and was an all around dolt.
Turns out that John Rook placed the ad.
He confronted Hal and said, "Hal, you hurt me". Actually, there were no hard feelings, and Hal stayed on at the K.

I may be senile, but I clearly remember that line-up. Also, wasn't Steve Rizen the replacement for Chuck Daugherty and he called it "Risen with Rizen"? Or not. And I don't think Jeff really thinks I'm senile--------? As for Chuck Brinkman, if you are reading this, I am possibly Pittsburgh's first insane DJ groupie. I went to Miami in 62 and one thing I had to do was go to a WQAM dance just to see the jocks! I figured they must be the best cause it was TIGER RADIO.
Alfred Rizien did not replace Chucky From Kentucky. Alfred (Steve) didn't come to KQV until sometime after 1961. That's when I left KQV for DYSR (840 on your AM dial). When I returned to the Q in 1965 Steve was still there.
Bill Western was doing the morning show when I left at the end of 1961.
If I remember correctly, Dave Scott took over for Chuck. However, my memory is a bit shaky since I'll be 75 this year. So cut me a little slack.
At least I'm still working full-time in broadcasting. Not bad for an old goat!

I thought the line-up with Roy Elwell in a split shift was the origional. If not, what was the absolutely first line-up when KQV flipped to Full time Top 40 (not counting Don McNeill and ABC news at 6:30) and who was PD before John Rook? Why do I not remember Bill Western?

Went to the Tribute page and it seems the Lee Vogel in Miami is not the same guy from KQV based on Lee's stops after KQV. I just don't remember Lee Vogel on WAMP. Sorry. Also there is no mention of Roy Elwell. Did I just imagine that he was a KQV jock? Maybe I have him confused with Roy Face. That's the ticket.

Roy Elwell is mentioned multiple times on the tribute site. He's listed in the "where are they now" section and his arrival and departure are noted in the KQV timeline. The timeline also has regular listings of the DJ lineups.
Roy Elwell came in after Sam Holman left. He was a jock in State College....I think WMAJ.
I remember reading about the death of Lee Vogel in Broadcasting Mag. sometime in the mid sixties. When I joined 13Q in 1973 the receptionist said that I had a phone call from Lee Vogel. I was quite confused, to say the least. Turns out it was the other Lee Vogel who had died.
Lee left KQV and replaced Davy Tyson (fair, fat and forty) at WAMP/WFMP. I think it was in 1961. It was certainly before I left KQV.
Why don't you remember Bill Western? Why should you? Dick Drury made a bid promotion about KQV going Western. Many listeners thought we were going C and W. Bill was the most laid-back morning dj that I had ever heard. When you listened to him you wanted to turn off the clock radio and go back to sleep. He didn't last too long.

Thanks for the update. This is humbling. I thought I remembered everything :'( If Lee Vogel went to WAMP, what was their format? I remember it being a hybrid MOR/BEZ that signed off at 1AM. Is that right? All I remember is that I could not listen to it for more than five minutes.

Around 1972 or so, WLEE in Richmond ( which was very much like KQV in format and being up against a 50,000 giant) put up billboards saying they were going country that turned out to be only a contest.
