Mrs. Dean,
My name is Troy Walker. When I was 17 years old, Larry gave me my first job at KXSA, then KAKA. He was without a doubt the greatest country music announcer I have ever heard. He had such a wonderful understanding of the people who enjoy the music, where it came from, and where it was going. He was never too busy to teach and guide me and he tried to teach me all he could....down to the difference of when to say the and thu. Couple that with a wonderful, warm voice with a soothing timber....and you were glad tocount Larry Dean as a friend and mentor.
I remember when I got my first program director's job. Larry was more proud that I was and he always had time to help me when I needed it. I remember when I was working at KAMO in Rogers Arkansas I got a call one day from someone who asked me if I knew Larry. I told him yes,Larry had given me my first job. Then he paid me the greatest compliment I have ever received or ever will as an announcer. The caller said that I sounded just like Larry. I will never forget that....even though I never felt worthy of the comparison.
After I was lucky enough to get into Law Enforcement, Larry was proud of me again. Even though I loved being in radio, he knew that I has always wanted to be a Police Officer. We were able to visit a few times over the years, and we always shared a few laughs.
I now work as a Detective for the Boone County Sheriff's Office in Harrison. I think about Larry all the time. Mrs. Dean I hope that knowing that there are still a few of us out here that know, love and respect Larry will give you some comfort. I lost my father on June 17, 2008. Those same kind of people have been a comfort to me.
God bless Larry Dean and may he rest in peace. On the country station in Heaven....ther is one heck of a show going on....and Larry is having a great time!
