Larry Munson Retires

1) Rename the stadium after him effective today!
2) I noticed he retires right as the good movies start coming out. I expect to see him at the Midtown Art every weekend.
3) May he enjoy many years in blissful, stress-free retirement.

I am sure going to miss his live voice but I wish Larry Munson best of luck and God's speed in his retirement. Georgia games are never going to be the same again but there is no lack of material around for us to listen to for many a year when he has left us for the great Dawghouse in the sky! I am sure there is material that could fit on dozens of CD's for many years and I am sure people would buy them like hotcakes.

"Lindsey Scott! Lindsey Scott! Lindsey Scott!

Miss you Larry...
ps. Do you still have that blow up balloon doll you got for your birthday at Morton's a while back?! What a night!

A true legend who will be missed. This Auburn fan salutes you Mr. Munson. Enjoy your retirement...you deserve it. WAR EAGLE!

Arkansas lost its famous voice last year when Paul Ells died in a car accident. It was thought that he might have had a heart attack and blacked out when he was killed. I kind of knew after hearing that news of Paul and with Larry only doing home games, that Larry would retire soon. There are other SEC voices that will not last forever. How many Saturday's have we spent listening to our favorite teams and these legendary voices? There will be hard shoes to fill across alot of the SEC.

Skip and Munson the same year...:'(

I frequently had the pleasure of producing his call in show when I was with WSB. The stories he told me when the mic was off were fantastic. I hope his son persuades him to write a book of his many adventures. From his days with the Dorsey band to a very famous well known actress, to the night they thought his dog killed a neighbor's duck....all would make great reading.
Larry is a great story teller and one hell of a nice guy. Georgia football will never be the same. Best wishes Larry.
BTW- the idea nameing something after him while he's still alive to appreciate it is outstanding! Hopefully the Bulldog nation will take up the cause. Thanks for the memories Larry!

I'm not in favor of renaming Sanford Stadium, however I think we can take a page from the folks up here at University of Kentucky (and trust me, it hurts to give any kind of props to UK). When Caywood Ledford retired, they renamed the court at Rupp Arena Caywood Court. I'd like to do something like that. Munson Field at Sanford Stadium.

Georgia PBPannouncers through the years:

Bill Munday

Ed Thilenius

Larry Munson

Scott Howard

Pretty impressive. The pbp duties have been handled by just 4 men in 80 years.

I worked with Larry and produced a sports commentary show he did in Nashville in the early 70s. We got to be good friends, even double dating and spending weekends on a houseboat. Talk about stories. He went with my wife and me to get married in 71. We got married in a criminal courtroom at 10 in the morning on a Friday. Did it then because he wanted to be there, but had to fly out to do a Georgia game that afternoon. What a GREAT guy. I called him on his 85th birthday and he asked if Karen and I were still married. Then said, "Damn, you guys have survied longer than all of mine!"
I retired two weeks ago after 43 years in the business....makes me feel like a youngster.
God Bless you ole Friend....

I like the sound of "between the Munson Hedges at Sanford Stadium"

I also had the honor of working with Larry for about 6 years, recording daily commentaries in Atlanta. He is an incredibly nice gentleman. I live just across the road from
him and until about a year ago, I would see him on daily walks through the neighborhood. With his body failing, he can no longer make those walks. I miss seeing him on those walks as much or more than I'll miss hearing him on air.

I heard the story that during his teen years, the Dorsey orchestra was playing in his area. The piano player was not able to play and Dorsey asked who they could get to fill in. Larry ended up filling in for a couple of weeks. Dorsey's male vocalist in the orchestra- Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.

Larry Munson and Dizzy Dean

Funniest broadcast I've ever seen (or heard) was during the Braves first year in Atlanta, 1965. WSB-TV had the rights then, and they paired Munson with Dizzy Dean! One Friday night they were playing in Philadelphia and a rain storm came up. The visiting TV team was stuck out almost in the bleachers, in a kind of "lean-to" booth. Munson complained bitterly about his books getting wet. Dean got bored during the rain delay (the TV director did some marvelously arty shots of raindrops in puddles in soft focus) and bought some peanuts from a passing vendor (and ate them on the air) and sang a couple of verses of THE WABASH CANNONBALL. After a while, Dizzy said he was tired, had a plane to catch, and left Munson with it. I wish somebody had a transcript or recording of his ad-libbing for the next half hour.

I like Scott Howard, but it won't be the same without Larry Munson, even Scott admitted this himself. Scott is also sports director for WGNC and WGAU in Athens. He also does afternoons on WNGC with former Y106 boss jock George Mason-Dixon.
