Larry Wells out at DRC-FM

I'm sorry guys . After posting .I got confused between Larry and Floyd being back on the air.Hahaha.It must of been the night when I fell asleep on the computer.

I wonder if Grahame's going to continue in this timeslot indefinitely or if Buckley is either going to fill it with cheaper local talent or outsource it for a syndicated feed. She is the PD, after all, and there's got to be more important stuff on her plate than jocking for a few hours five days a week.

Voice tracking.
All she has to do is to spend a few minutes a day recording some current sounding breaks and be done with it. It's a lot less expensive than hiring a talented radio personality. Remember, it's 2011. It's no longer important to relate to the audience.

So this will return DRC-FM to the way it was before Larry and Floyd flipped airshifts and Floyd went live? I remember Floyd being voicetracked when he was doing middays and Larry had PM drive. Now it makes sense, unfortunately. Grahame is the PD, Rob Ray is in charge of production, so both can set time aside to voicetrack a day's worth of breaks while they do their main jobs. I don't think Larry was anything but an air personality at DRC-FM.

The station sure has changed over the past couple of years. I just checked a couple of weekdays' playlists at yes.com and found that '60s songs are being limited to three or four an hour, about the same as '80s titles. The focus now is firmly in the '70s. I also noticed that not a single pre-British Invasion song was played on Ron Sedaille's request show last night, so either the 60+ crowd has stopped listening or their requests are being ignoted. Sad, but time marches on.

the one thing missing from this thread is how corny and out of date larry wells sounded. maybe that is the reason for his removal

That's part of the station's charm. Jerry Kristafer and Mike Stevens sound the same as they always have and they're not going anywhere. I think.

To answer some earlier comments about "just jocking," I think it's more important than ever to relate to your audience. Terrestrial radio can still do that in a unique way.

You may think you know all about people we hear on the radio. Some people even think they know what motivates executive decisions inside a radio station. Believe me, we don't. 31 years of involvement at one radio station is in itself an awesome accomplishment for Larry. All the conjecture here about why it happened doesn't diminish that.

Glenn,
I hope you realize I was being a bit sarcastic with my "relating" comment. I've always been very pro-personality. It's one thing radio has over ipods.
I just think it's sad that a station that seems to have a decent spotload can't afford to employ a full staff of air personalities.

Sarcasm is understandable when voice trackers aren't often given the time or money to put a lot of prep into a VT show, yet it's still important not to sound "mailed in." We really can't speculate what any station's financial situation may be just by how many spots we're hearing. I don't notice an inordinate amount of spots there compared to competitors. Some stations over the years have undervalued their product at a "dollar a holler" since radio started running commercials. I'm not saying that's the case here. Again, we just don't know.
