Las Vegas, NV DXing FM/TV

I thought KAIM went to FM, a new 2kW station on 880 was set up near Honolulu.

The station on 880 in Honolulu is the same license that was on 870. The callsign changed somewhere along the way, leaving the "KAIM" call only on FM.

If there's stronge skip on Analog Ch. 2 can it cancel out KSNV-DT??

Not really. Just think of KSNV as another signal to which co-channels have to deal with.

I have yet to have a local DTV station taken over by another one, outside of LD stations. Closest was a station about 70 miles away (West Palm Beach) overtaken by a co-channel in Orlando, about 2 years ago.

I have seen analog 13 in Cuba battling with West Palm Beach's WPEC-DT, but it is certainly not watchable....

The only station I have gotten from Las Vegas (and Nevada) was KCEP - 88.1. It was in for hours that day (in June '10) if I recall correctly ... much longer than typical Es.

Hey Mario, I just got back from Vegas and I can tell you that AM DXing is pretty good there as long as you're not inside a hotel on the Strip. The best catch I've had while there is CKWX News 1130 from Vancouver, BC. This was snagged last year using a simple Sony Walkman AM/FM radio while at the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas (you just have to null out interference from KYDZ). Surprisingly, on the drive-up from Phoenix to Las Vegas at night, CKWX comes in surprisingly strong along US 93 between Kingman and the Hoover Dam. No rhyme or reason why, it just comes in stronger there before fading as you get closer to Vegas. Down in Phoenix, CKWX is doable, but it's a challenge. Also, try for KOMO 1000 from Seattle. That's a pretty open frequency around there since KFLG signs-off at night.

As far as Chicago clears in Vegas, I think it's next to impossible. WGN is obviously a no go with KDWN, WBBM is difficult with KOH and so is WLS with nearby KDXU. Based on that, WSCR and WMVP would be your best bets, but I've never heard them west of the Rockies. Where I live in Phoenix, we're far enough away from the Nevada stations that WGN and WBBM are doable with a lot of patience in the wintertime. WLS is more difficult, but I have snagged it a couple times down here. I've never been able to pick-up WMVP or WSCR, although I bet WSCR can be snagged at some point.

Best of luck Mario and have fun in Vegas! ;D

WSCR is not doable in Vegas now with a local on 670 there.

What's interesting is that I've been trying for WSCR for years now, and all I've heard on 670 was either KBOI, KMZQ, or even CUBA [which is 1000 miles farther than Chicago], but never WSCR. I have gotten WGN, WBBM and WLS in the last three years however.

I heard WSCR on the Northern Ireland receiver on Global Tuners last winter.

I would imagine the presence of local KYDZ 1140 in Vegas has a lot to do with that, especially if IBOC is still running there.

I haven't heard WGN since KDWN went on the air in the '70s. WSCR won't make it this far west due to stations in Denver and LA (and Boise until about 15 years ago). WMVP has a deep null to the southwest, making it impossible to hear out here - it has to protect OKC and Seattle.

It's hard to hear WMVP at night 150 miles west of Chicago. When White Sox games were carried on WMVP several years ago the team had to create a network of stations in downstate Illinois & parts of Iowa because fans couldn't hear their games at night.

Keith, with enough patience, you can pick-up WGN on certain nights in the winter-time here in Phoenix. Granted, I live away from a lot of the big Phoenix sticks out in the East Valley, but Phoenix is actually in a good location to null KDWN since a lot of their power goes away from Phoenix at night. I picked up WGN a couple times this past winter along with WBBM, but I find WBBM harder to catch thanks to splatter from KKOB.

Now the true DX test for Mario would be to pick-up everybody's favorite station here in Phoenix, the Lumberyard on 1440 AM. Surprisingly, I have picked-up the little station that could one night not too long ago in Orange County, CA. I have yet to pick it up in Vegas, though. Give it a shot Mario and if you do snag it, you could win a free Kookie bumper sticker courtesy of the Buckeye Media Hut! ;)

Mario, in the daytime it would be interesting to see if you can get 700 KALL from Salt Lake City, as they send their signal that way and the ground conductivity between Las Vagas and Salt Lake City is very good.

And I don't know how much interference there would be at night from any western stations but I was wondering if you could get 870 WWL from New Orleans.

It was easily heard in California at night until other stations were added to that frequency.

There is now an 870 in the Las Vegas market. That along with the 870 in LA would make WWL really hard to get.

I didn't look at the AM frequency log book. I knew there was one in California anyway which made WWL impossible to hear last time I was there.

Another possible one to try for at night is 1200 WOAI from San Antonio.

KYAA from Soquel would probably be too strong to hear WOAI where Mario lives but In Las Vegas, there doesn't seem to be any station on that frequency too close to interfere unless there's too much splatter from any stations on the adjacent frequencies but it's hard to tell if that would be the case just from looking at the AM station log book.

870 is out of the question

I'll look for 700 KALL in the daytime, Also 1200 WOAI I have plans listning to it at night

I'm only there for 5 days..It also going to be hard with my famliy in the house

But i will listen, I'm still focusing on FM & TV

Unfortunately, "3 miles east of the Strip" (Boulder Highway area?) puts you fairly close to the Black Mountain tower farm. Not a lot of open channels to work around all those Black Mountain signals. I'll be interested to hear what the dial sounds like for you.
