lash...Station for sale...

Hey, lash!

I hear there is another AM small town station in West Tennessee on the market.
WTRB in Ripley, TN.
It's gotta be reasonably priced-'cause they aren't billing much!
It was purchased a while back from Walt Williams.
It has been said that the ownership wants out.
That's the word on the street, anyway. ;D

Since Bill Thomas is wanting to sell up and down Highway 51 with WKBQ/WKBL, he ought to buy it and just let it go dark. I agree, Grace Broadcasting can't be asking much for it.

Grace has two local partners (a father and son)...word has it the local partners REALLY want out.
Lacey/Charles Ennis have Grace, I guess...I dunno why they wanted to buy this one.
Williams had raped it pretty good. They did put new equipment (Computers, anyway) and a music system in.
I hear it only billed a VERY small amount in Jan and Feb.
Could probably be picked up for a song...but then what?
It's a decent building and the transmitter is on site.

I know Lacey and will contact him. We've talked about this one before.

Thanks guys!

Hey Chris,

Is Grace trying to buy up another AM? If so, I think I might file against them. You tell them that I said this young whipper snapper believes in localism. The owner of the station should be living in the COL, and I'm sick & tired of them calling every small AM operator wanting to snatch them up and run them like religious, FM, non com, non-profits, and avoiding the COL. I would love to own a little AM they have on 1500, but I'm too far from there and that little 250 watt AM needs to be locally owned & operated. What the hell was Paul Tinkle thinking when he sold that to them? Knowing Paul, $$$$$$$!

Oh, when things get back to normal here, I want to run down and have lunch with ya.

See ya.

I think their trying to sell one actually, if I'm reading the post right.

Come on down, and see some local radio.

Hey Rock, Just because the owner isn't local, doesn't mean the Radio isn't...

I host the morning show at the Selmer TN stations of Grace, It's me and Joe and we basically run the show...

Joe more than me of course. But not all of the stations are like you say... so cut them some slack.

I think that Grace ended up with 1500 because of buying it along with 93.7 in Atwood/Milan 97.7 in Trenton, mainly to get 93.7 for part of the Dove network. 97.7 was changed to news/talk and 1500 to Southern Gospel. It wouldn't bother me if they were to sell off 97.7 or 1500 unless they've planned to do a more youth oriented CCM format on 97.7. But I've seen no evidence of that ever happening.

Lash,
I don't know that they're for sale, but I wish you could get hold of WCTA AM 810 in Alamo, where I live. They have a few times with local recorded programming, but most of the time they're news/talk from a satellite and automated ads. I'd love to see something more done locally with it even if it was a fromat that I may not like personally. (Just no dollar a holler PLEASE!) ;D

Right now, no one is returning phone calls. Not sure what's truly for sale and whats now. Meanwhile the owner of WQMS in Quitman, MS writes me to let me know he's buying a new transmitter, trying to inspire some of us who already made offers on his dark property, to go higher towards his price. People are nuts!

There should be a test for someone to be allowed to purchase and own a radio station.

Hey Chris,
Give me a shout off this list on my private email address when you get a chance.

I'm not sure I agree with you, Rocko. I've seen some very successful local radio stations run by absentee operators. Believe it or not, one of them is none other than Clear Channel. They bought up a lot of high-powered FM's in non-rated markets in northwest Ohio years ago, and unlike other companies, they didn't try "move-ins" to Toledo or like that. They marketed them as strong regional stations, and since many of those FMs were paired with AM's, they left those AM's to be very local operations with a strong community presence, rather than shutting them down or letting them go dark like a lot of other companies. WTTF-AM (Tiffin), WSAN-AM (Sandusky) are two good examples of very local AM stations controlled by a large company.

While that is primarily the exception and not the norm, if an owner in another state has a local staff that they can trust, they can make local radio work. I don't think an owner should be required to reside in the COL or near it.

Find out how much he paid for the box, and then adjust your offer accordingly! :D

My last offer would triple his money. He can adjust to me, if he wants. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on its dark status.

Actually, you'd probably be better off to tell him to keep his box and buy your own. But come on, a brand new BE AM1A costs $12,000. Brand new. He, of course, probably thinks that the station is worth $40,000 more just because he bought a used transmitter new to the station. Some people. This is why I respectfully decline when owners like that one call and ask me to sell their station. Every time I've tried it, I've found an owner like Lash, who has sense and will make a fair offer, and the idiot owner gets offended and says his station is worth a gazillion bucks.

Just because he's bought a new transmitter really doesn't matter. It appears to me that this guy really isn't serious about selling it. He's told the FCC in his last slient authority application that he has tower problems with rusted guy wires, cracking insulators, etc. If he's serious to get out of it, he'll sell it at the right price, what it's really worth.
Is the property leased or owned by this guy? If it is a lease, DON'T GIVE HIM WHAT HE WANTS! I've seen in these small AM operations where the property was worth more than the license!

No property, no studio, no equipment, and a leased tower.

I was nuts on my last offer on it!

J-Rod, are you telling me this for job security, afraid that your boss & his son will see this post?

Nope... Just letting you know that Radio can still be local when the owner isn't..

I used to work for Clear Channel of Jackson, TN... The owner was corporate.. but the stations were still local..

The ownership isn't what makes stations great... It's the people that the owners let run it.

I've also worked at stations where the Owner was the General Manager, and the Morning Show host, and the Sales manager, and might as well have been the news director.

Some times all that "hands on" can have a negative effect.

I'm just voicing my belief.... One thing I've learned about radio (and all jobs) is that you need to always know that you can be "let go" at any time, for any reason.

Now don't get me wrong, I like my job, and I want to keep doing it.

But, I take offence that you would think that I need to kiss up to the higher ups to do that. My work speaks for itself.

I just think you need to cut distance owners some slack. When they let their people run things good things can happen.

and if My boss is reading this.... "Hi Joe, Hi Brad, Hi Rodney, Hi Lacey, How are ya'll. hope your having a good day."
