Last nights terrible late night -overnight show on 610 WIP

So I am usually driving between 2AM and 3 AM and get to listen to Big Daddy Grahm or a worthy fill in. Last night Mitch Williams Chris Terien, who I usually like on the air, Michael Barkhan and some guy who was referred to as Joe, not Conklin but he made sure to say a billion times how he was a comedian...and he seemed to be running the show as the main host. It was horrible. So many inside jokes, they hardly took any callers, they couldn't finish a thought before going to the next bad joke followed by the worst impression of Mickey from Rocky by "joe". The only reason I kept listening was to see why the were on the air, perhaps a tryout for a future show or to replace the likable but totally unlistenable Ike Reese,he seems so nice but come on did you hear him during the Flyers playoff run??? What is up with 610??? First they punish us with the annoying Paul Jolivitz and Lucy Jones, then they allow Steve Trebalise, another totally likable dude, to torture us with his unknown comedian friends on the air, then they give us Ike at night ,and now this garbage that was showcased last night. They better get their nights and weekends straightened up before 950 moves in,they will never beat WIP but they could take a bite. How about more Brian Sitarri , Rob Elis and Mark Eckkle? When their is hockey free agency how about showcasing Al Morgani, a well respected hockey guy instead of wasting time talking to him when the Red Socks are in town? The imaging at the station sounds better than it ever has but the talent has declined a little and they need to tighten it up.
By the way..I apologize for the misspelling of any names here.

Is it me or, until Big Daddy came along, the only real overnight show on WIP was the short-lived "Rodd and the Lady Rae"?

Ummm, that's "Rod WILLLLLLIAM Stovell and the LOVELY Rachael Marie...."

I don't think 950 has a shot even during the overnights. ESPN's overnight show is like milk toast. So vanilla.

i remeber back about 1993 that wip used to silmucast a show something called sports entertainment network out of vegas what ever happedn that that show , the best wip lineup was in the eairly 902 jody mac stever and mike , carton fired him for telling the truth about lindross that stiff , wip is now a shell of what used to be a gret station ,

Agreed that was there best lineup...and I said 950 would never win just take a little bite....maybe a tiny tiny one

By the way was anyone listening to it ??It was really bad

OK...I may be nuts here, but I actually liked it. I thought Mitch Williams and Chris Therien were good together, and Barkann was funny, even though he sounded like he was half-asleep (which he probably was, at 4AM). The other guy, Joe, was OK. I think they said his name was Joe Matarese, a comedian. But you're right...his Rocky and Mick impressions were pretty bad. When I listened, Wild Thing was running the show, and again I may be crazy, but I thought he was good. He's a funny guy, and his baseball insights are really good.

on another note...with Angelo gone for the week I was HOPING to hear a decent AM show. As I can not listen to WIP when he is on......! Big Daddy as a fill-in is the best they can muster. Horrible show with him as host. As bad as when Angelo is on! So... Click.
If only WPEN would have a local AM show (though at least the stumbling/mumbling Glenn Foley is gone .
PM Drive, I converted to 950 and Mike Miss. Never could stomach Howard.
As for Nights on WIP with Ike.....another Click! Man that is one bad show.

WIP has been getting worse for a long time. The morning show is becoming more about hot women, then sports. Hugh Douglas and Mitch Williams are boring and add nothing to the show. I lost all respect for Mitch when he stuck up for Roger Clemmons. Chris Therion isnt much better. Angelos' act is getting old. Rhea is much better when she does her own show, then playing a stooge for Angelo. Glen Mcnow thinks he knows more than what he does. I used to enjoy Gargano, but he's becoming annoying with all his book stuff. Eskin is his usual, either you like him or hate him. Reese knows alot about several sports, but his presentation needs improvement. Big Daddy is another know it all, who does a horrible job filling in for Angelo. I find myself listening more to Jody Mac and Mike Miss. I have been listening to WIP since the beginning and as mentioned, this is probably the worst line up ever. Look for WPEN to improve their ratings when they are local.

Wow, I thought for sure you were talking about a re-run.
Personally I am very happy that 950 took on ESPN in the mornings because I cannot stand Cataldi and crew. I am interested in sports, not women (I'm a straight woman), and sometimes those guys get a little repulsive with their slobbering all over sweet young things.

I like Mike&Mike in the morning, and I hope 950 lasts just so I can keep listening to them. I wish they would put JodyMac back in the afternoons though, Missanelli is deadly boring.

I think Mike in the Morning is ok at best. While it is sports talk and that is a plus (vs the aforementioned chick talk) it is way too scripted and everything is sponsored (Hell it sounds like an Eagles game on YSP where my guess is that the announcer bathroom breaks will soon be sponsored). But I assume that in order to get the ESPN content you must carry M and M. So I will just listen to something other than sports during my AM drive to work.

It's real simple...950 needs to make a few changes.
First of all...a LOCAL show OVERNIGHT, from 2a-6a.
Secondly, weekend programming from 10-4pm, prolly 2 shows.

Jody Mac is good, Mikey Miss is ok...but their big names...so they should stay...

The Locker Room is bad, not as bad as Ike Reese, but bad...they should bring on new, younger talents. Harry and Dan are bland and standard....blahhhh

Oh yea, and some play by play of local teams would be great...if only CBS didnt have a monopoly on that

And lastly, none of the above will happen, b/c Greater Media is CHEAP!!!
ESPN should buy this station and run it like they do with 1050 in NY and 1000 in Chicago

You are not the target audience. WIP is guy talk with sports. Thats why its been successful

Chris Therion was recently named the color commentator for Flyers games on WIP.

Wonder if these "experiment" shows was a springboard for such a role?

Let me stand up for Ike Reese here. He's still a work in progress, but I like him along with Hugh Douglas. I like the approach that WIP is taking here...instead of bringing in smooth and seasoned broadcasters, they're bringing in recognized Philly personalities and sports figures. Even though I'm in radio myself, I'm someone who's more interested in hearing personality and content rather than polished professionalism. To me, Ike Reese is a perfect example of WIP's strength, which is being an unmistakeably Philly radio station rather than a generic, canned sports talk station.

the overnight show doesn't matter, so they don't care who hosts it. Can't believe neither 610 or 950 will make a run at bringing Tony Bruno back home. He's still out of work and living in LA and he was good enough to fill in for Dan Patrick on his national show, but not good enough to work in Philly?

If 950 wanted to really put a scare and actually get some am drive ratings, they would pay Bruno big bucks and take on Angelo. Remember, Bruno was the guy who turned that show into a "radio" show in the early 90's when it was Angelo and Brookie sounding like amateur hour. Bruno vs Angelo in the morning and now Missanelli up against ESkin would give 950 two legit drive-time shows - with LOCAL guys - to really give sports listens a real option and the station would be legit and respected; unlike now. The rest of the day-parts don't matter, so the ESPN crap or the stumbling WIP guys who are dime a dozen guys who want to hear themselves talk would wash each other out.

Would be nice as I am on record as not liking much of anything on WIP. I also miss hearing Tony. But me thinks that 950 MUST carry the Mike and Mike commercial, sorry, Mike and Mike Show in the am!

I think that's correct...950 has to carry Mike and Mike, and Tirico as well. It was part of the deal for them to be able to call themselves "ESPN". Another problem is that it seems like 950 doesn't have the budget to bring a guy like Bruno back. The shame of it is, if they could do more local shows, I think they could give WIP a run for their money. But with a syndicated show in the morning, it will be tough for them.
