IMO - Elizabeth Warren's stock will rise in the next couple of years. She was probably Trump's severest critic in 2016 - she's extremely articulate, and she's the heir apparent to Bernie Sanders as the leader of the more progressive (left-leaning) wing of the party. There will also be a lot of support to elect a woman since Hillary didn't make it. Despite what many lefties believe, I don't think Bernie could have beaten Trump, and he would be too old in 2020 in any case. If elected, by that time, Warren would be the second oldest President...but the oldest now (beating Reagan who was 69) is Trump (70) - so I don't think age will be an issue.
The Late Night Talk Shows were supposed to be a chance to laugh and get away from the news, that was just on. I am so finished with Stephen Colbert. He and Jon Stewart have collectively brought The Late Show to a disgraced. Letterman handed over a top rate, professionally ran show. These two have just obliterated it.
I've happily turned to Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmel is great, but he's clearly another (gasp!) liberal.
Thinking back, I do not recall late night talk shows being so political in content. When I think of specific 'bits', however, it seems politics was always a part of the humor that also included other non-political well known individuals.
Might the issue be more of changing society. Never before, at least in public circles, has politics been such a factor. In today's world you're either this or that and both sides are different enough to cause the other side to object. I suspect most political beliefs lie somewhere toward the middle from the examples shown of liberal and conservative. Maybe folks just aren't comfortable with either side and while feeling 'forced' to select a side, tend to be more sensitive to the opposition. Media responds by choosing a side that they feel will get them the audience and the advertising in response to the political 'charge' of today's society. Perhaps that is wrong but it is working, so I doubt it will be fixed until it doesn't work. At some point, I suspect, society will tire of choosing political sides (becoming more of a private versus public issue) and desire programming that has humor as the focus yet is void of any 'hinted at' political undertones. For example, one bit Letterman used I thought was funny for simply the humor was the dog in the metal carrier attached to the top of a station wagon, stating it was Romney's car and dog (following the report that inspired that visual picture). Sure, the bit involved a political figure but I felt it funny. Perhaps Letterman didn't care for Romney but I can't say simply based on that 'bit'.

Same here, but I don't think that Baldwin wants the gig on a regular basis.
Yeah, not a big fan of Sarah Palin, but I quit watching Letterman after he would NOT stop harping about her, even when she was not in the news. Apparently, he was just bitter about her refusing to go on his show. With his behavior the last few years, I couldn't blame her. And this was the same Letterman that CHER, of all people, called a name that had to be bleeped, years ago!
As we were discussing this three weeks ago, the The Late Show began a three week streak of beating Tonight in Total Viewers.
Since January 1st, Colbert has finished first six of eight weeks according to data provided by the Hollywood Reporter.

That's great news, AFAIC. In my opinion, Colbert is a huge talent (though I liked his material better on Comedy Central), while Fallon is weak compared to Leno or Carson.
