This could be a cost-cutting move, or (inclusive or) it could be a move that tries to anticipate the political orientation of Skydance's owner. There has been a lot of speculation about that, centering on Colbert and on Jon Stewart. The timing of the announcement, ten months in advance, is also curious.

The Skydance deal isn't done. This removes an excuse for the administration to object or obstruct.

If I were the gang at the Daily Show, I'd be nervous. If Paramount moves on them, it won't just be Jon Stewart.

It comes off to me like a move from the Viktor Orban playbook.

Stewart seems to have some equanimity about the situation:

He said that he “honestly” doesn’t know if Skydance would axe The Daily Show, which has been on air since 1996 and just posted big ratings. “I’d like to believe that without The Daily Show… I don’t know. Comedy Central is kind of like muzak at this point. I think we’re the only sort of life that exists on a current basis other than South Park. But it’s the only thing on there. I’d like to think we bring enough value to the property.

The timing is all too coincidental. Don't be surprised if The Daily Show folds next.
Wouldn't surprise me if Jon Stewart goes rogue and that happens. He has nothing to prove.

It's also the only show Comedy Central has outside of endless South Park reruns. That channel barely has a reason to exist.
Return of The CBS Late Movie?
Ellison is probably going to shut down CBS altogether at this point. Linear media was dying to begin with and this is a farewell swat.

i wouldn't be surprise CBS under Skydance becomes another "de facto" state run media outlet run by allies of the President, who truly is America's first true dictator.
I disagree. CBS doesn't have anything beside NFL football now and whatever programming of value that still existed were already duplicated on streaming. Including 60 Minutes.

The network is simply dying. It was already dying last year and the cracks were really evident during and since the SAG/AFTRA strike.

We're on the cusp of a post-linear world.

Could WBD pick up the corpse?

CBS isn’t a cable channel. It’s still one of the big four.
In theory. Their only strength at this point is the NFL on CBS. Primetime is a wasteland, the news department has had trust and ratings issues for generations, and they just canned the only show of note they have.
