KKGO's 1.8 rating is astonishing with nothing but word-of-mouth responsible; no TV ads, no full-page ads in the LA Times, and very few signs on bus benches and the like.

Going from the worst morning show in the market since the Brian Roberts snooze-a-thon at KRTH to a state-of-the-art one cannot be downplayed; the on-the-air chemistry between Shawn Parr & Robin Banks is exceptional.

Perhaps you didn't see the enormous amount of media coverage the format change received. And you may be giving too little credit to word-of-mouth; in this day of IMing, TEXTing, Twitter and the like, word-of-mouth is a viable process. Check out www.womma.org.

Then explain why Rick Dees is in 23rd place and Movin in 28th place. He's received more free publicity on local tv newscasts and newspapers (starting last year) along with millions spent in tv and billboards than anyone in this market in years. Tons more than Go Country 105.1.

This is a perfect example of someone taking a specific and making it a generalization.

I never said that quantity of publicity/promotion equals success. You still have to have a product that fulfills the user's need. Evidently KKGO is doing that. KROQ does ZERO marketing, and has been a top 5 station for years. When Adam Carolla started 20 months ago, his mug was plastered on practically every bus in LA and Orange county AND they ran a ton of TV...and couldn't draw an audience.

Huh? Making a generalization. I think I was highly specific.

As for your new post, KROQ has been around since the 1970's. I don't think anyone in this market doesn't know what they are. It's almost a "brand" for the alternative format worldwide. Top 5 in a demo yes but not Top 5 12+, btw.

Adam Carolla was a new player in the market for mornings. Rick Dees was't. Carolla has done the best of all the CBS losers that took over for Stern so I'd say that campaign paid off o.k.. Dees is just an old guy shakin' his butt that thinks he can still relate. But all the publicity and marketing Emmis has received/done isn't working.

BTW, KROQ better start doing some marketing based on their current numbers.

No one has brought it up, but the "black" plays are as dead as a doornail. KRBV still at a 1.5, KJLH at a 1.0 and KDAY at a 0.8. No wonder KDAY is bailing out, the real battle will be between KRBV and KJLH. It will be interesting to see Who wins, Winston and Monds or jocks in training on the fuzzy signal.
Would be nice if V100 would have the music in their mixes - such as "Uptown Saturday Night" - in stereo. They never do. This is Los Angeles isn't it? V100, KJLH, does it make a difference? Same players (in more ways than just radio) crossing the tracks back and forth. Neither station will ever be significant in this market.

Are you kidding???? KROQ is one of THE MOST marketed stations in Los Angeles. By the way, its not just TV ads that count....dont forget print ads, show signage, billboards, bus ads, email blasts, signage at retail stores, concert venues,
and PRESS. KROQ does MORE than most stations. (And spends more than most too). Don't think any of it is organic!
