Latest LA Country station rumor

This was posted recently at All About Country.com...

"Something in LA is about to BREAK...in a great way. Country is back but only a week or two away from sounding "clearer." And NO, we're not talking Clear Channel. Fans from another format will be very upset when their station flips...all sooner than later. It's a "Classic!" "

The floor is now open to discussion...

Uh... that would be Saul putting it on 1260 and making it clearer in L.A. And the standards folks are going to be upset.

Already old news... what's the point???

Well, since 75 percent of the market is ethnic, why not?

Why not just burn all the libraries, while we're at it? Make them lavanderias, liquor stores or pupuserias.

KBIG.

I see. We nuke the biggest gainer in the last trend to take on a format that had half the shares KBIG has presently. Try again.

Saul Levine should just sell both sticks and retire!

I don't get that guy. If he's comfortable squeaking by with a tiny amount of profit, why doesn't he just play whatever kind of music he likes, permanently? I guess he sort of does that with the FM outlet.

Actually, with all the musicians and other creative types in this town, it would be nice to have a quality music outlet staffed by real music experts. A station that inspires some passionate fans. A place that plays a mix of rock, blues, jazz, some pop - but intelligently programmed and cool. Hire a bunch of knowledgable DJs with good personalities, give them some freedom, and sit back and enjoy some good radio. Make sure it has some local flavor. Don't make it NPR-ish, or really obscure, but not just a hit parade either. It would never be a ratings smash, but it would be a wonderful asset to the city. People might even listen to it nationwide online, if it were really special. That's what I'd do if I had a station and didn't need to worry about money.

Probably needs to be on FM, though. The AM should probably be standards and/or 50s and 60s oldies, since those songs were originally played on AM. The country idea for AM is wacky.

I wish I had a tiny profit of four or five million dollars a year, plus the income from other tens of millions in investments. Saul is a very well to do man, and can do what he pleases.

Yup.

Those that are Haters only wish they could own a Mt Wilson stick like him.

Me, I don't hate him, I envy him. :)

Oh, I don't hate the guy at all! I actually respect a person who will go his own way, rather than sell out for millions and millions. We are one of the few cities in the US with a commercial classical station, and that is something to be proud of. Without him, there would just be KUSC.

As for him making a 4 million dollar profit, that's pretty nice. I guess in all the articles I've read about him, it is implied that the station is "barely" profitable. Maybe they are looking at the potential profits he could have with a more mainstream format.

Anyhow, my main point was that if he can "do as he pleases," why does he seem to scramble onto the latest thing with that AM station? Also, I guess I was fantasizing about what I'd do if I had that signal and plenty of cash.

Cheers

For openers, Saul Levine's turned down TONS of offer for KMZT because it's signal is the best in Southern California.

Former R&R Country Music Editor Lon Helton reported in his newsletter awhile back that Clear Channel will flip one of it's stations to country in the not-too-distant-future, with KYSR & KBIG being the most likely candidates.

Based on power and height, KMZT's signal is the 13th best in LA. There are only 4 Wilson signals with less power, in fact (KIIS, KOST, KKLA and KSCA). It is only 18 kw, while KPFK has 110,000 and KBIG has 65,000 for example.

KYSR has not had as good a month as November, and KBIG is billing much more than KZLA ever did. This is not very likely, unless Clear feels they can pull a "Houston" where they killed one of two rockers and moved a lot of the dead station revenue to the survivor. I don't think it works that way in AC, though.
