LEGENDS 102.7: NOW THAT'S VARIETY FOR YOU!!

Then I'd try to get the WAXC call letters, call Jon Wolfert at JAM Productions for an upbeat and modern jingle package, and ask my cluster newsroom to add some info content into morning and afternoon drive dayparts even if it meant hiring someone additional to be the voice of it. In short, do a full WCBS-FM style remake.

I dunno, Bob...if I'm sitting on that 100.5 signal, and I have the WVOR calls still safely parked in my own cluster, I'm thinking I wouldn't be looking at "WAXC" as my new branding... ;)

My “past history” post was only about correcting the misconception that KB Cooper is not at WLGZ to stay. I agree with many of the radio professionals comments about the setup of the station. My perspective from 300 miles away is that WLGZ is trying to accomplish too much with too little. The playlist is so big you’re going to get numerous “train wreck’ segues. The station definitely needs a fresh jingles package.

The best thing for WLGZ might be some competition. There’s no way any corporate radio group will copy Legends all over the map music format. But a decent oldies station in Rochester (can’t believe a market this size doesn’t have one) could force WLGZ to tighten it’s playlist and stick to Adult Standards where the dated jingles work better.

Hey, Mark, which station in either the Entercom, Clear Channel or Stephens clusters do you think is most likely to change?
You could be on to something interesting here.

Bob-

I think our esteemed colleague Scott Fybush hit the bullseye when it comes to answering your question.

Bring back the WVOR call letters is indeed a smart idea. Add to that the morning team of Tony and Dee. Of course I would suggest local news like what WVOR had back when Dick Tobias was still with us.

As for programming ( and I am bias when making this statement since I work for the guy) but I would enlist the services of one Robert Craig Savage, Esq. If anyone in this market knows how to program a station it's RCS.

I might be in the minority, but I believe that competition is a good thing. And it would certainly give local radio a much needed shot-in-the-arm when it comes to generating
listeners.

This prospective station is getting more interesting by the moment.

Assuming Bob would want to take time away from his own operation (one wide-coverage AM news/talker in the market, soon to become two), if you could attract him to program the station and host afternoons in a lineup starting with Tony & Dee in the morning, you'd have both your drivetimes and your overall programming direction well covered in the reincarnation of WVOR.

So who for middays and nights?

There is enough local talent to fill middays and nights. We haven't had a "talent raid" in Rochester radio for many years now. Don't you think it's about time? ;D

As for Middays and Nights, what about Alicia King and have Bob Savage resurrect his Pillow Talk show or Warm Nights (I think it was called) show for the nighttime slot - or if Bob's doing afternoons -- who's the guy that did Warm nights after Bob left to program his own station? Dave Roberts? Anderson ... I can't remember. Then I lost track of the hosts after that once I moved outta the area.

Dave Adams, who was the overnight jock when I did Warm Nights. He also indulged his real love - 1960s oldies - with a part-time Saturday morning show on WYSL at the same time he was on 101.3.

Dave Adams - that's the guy. That must've been quite a swing from doing Soft AC Warm Nights to a '60's Oldies show. What's he doing now? Is he on the air still?

Boy you know it alls think you have all the answers. The current on-air talent on Legends is fine and the average listener doesn't care how the station formats its music as long as they hear their favorites. Why don't you lay off Legends and pick apart 107.3FM? They haven't had a consistant long-running format since they started in 1998!

OK. Most of us post here to get our radio ya-ya's out, but this thread has officially become the refuge of the chronically (or clinically) bored.

Oooh, qman seems a little sensitive!  Well, I hope you can take one more because here's another opinon from another know it all.

The problem with what you call "favorites" seems to be a matter of "fit".   Perry Como into "Chickaboom" by Daddy Dewdrop?    The Doobies "Take Me In Your Arms and Rock Me" into the big band favorite, "Stompin' at the Savoy"?  Are these for real?  Are you for real?

While each of these tunes is probably someone's favorite, it's not likely that a listener is going to sit through one to hear the other?  Seems to me the station is causing listeners to tune in and tune out rather than putting together selections that will keep the listener for a longer listening span and developing some TSL. The musical spectrum is just too wide; and TSL is critical for a station like this because the format is not a big cume format.

Sounds like Legends is shooting for listeners from the 45-death demographic and I think qman, you'd have to agree that there's a vast difference in tastes, in every category, between one end of this spectrum and the other.  They're not developing a core audience, the targets too broad.

On a side note, your suggestion that as long as they're hearing their "favorites" it doesn't matter what the music format is reminds me of the old research company axiom in the 80's -- "people never get tired of their favorite songs".  Guess what!  After hearing their favorite every day and a quarter, they did get tired.  And after a time, that favorite might have ended up in the trash heap.

What do you think guys, should we add 107.3 to the list of stations we pick apart next? (Sarcasm off)

I've been away for the last business week, during which time I didn't listen to a single terrestrial radio station. There was this channel Sirius 118, "Radio Classics" in my rental car, you see... ;)

I suppose I'm not what you call an average listener. I have nearly all of the songs in the "drive off the road" examples in my own music library-- including the most recently mentioned "Take Me In Your Arms" and "Stompin' at the Savoy". As much as I internally hear the "nails on the blackboard" when these jarring segues happen I do remark to myself that at least they're not strictly following the corporate radio mandate of playing only fully vetted tested and approved same old same old that I can hear most places on the dial.

Sure, there are better ways to do this, many of which involve, ahem, investment.

But I'd hate to see Legends become another remotely programmed completely safe 400 (or less) song playlist that has been gathered from the #2 pencil filled in dot responses of a statistically insignificant number of survey takers. And I say this having been one of those survey takers!

By the way, there is a "Tired Of" circle that can be filled in for each song on these surveys. I've used it quite liberally.

I only wish I had a company car that had satellite radio :( However since my job involves purchasing radio and TV time, I have to listen.
You hit the nail right on the head when you stated "there are better ways to do this, many of which involve, ahem, investment. "
From my personal and professional prospective, I don't think the folks at Legends plan on investing much into improving their product, at least in the near future. One poster believes that eventually Crawford will spend money. However my reaction is the company had better hurry up and start investing, otherwise their audience will erode and there won't be a reason too.

I just happened upon this. Thank you for thinking of me.

Best regards,

Alicia King

Wow when i saw this thread at the top of the list my first thought was who has something new to say about legends? After all, we just recently celebrated one year on the air with this oldies/standards hybrid format, took a lot of shots from the big bad posters on radio-info, and still live to talk about it! So i thought who would have something new to say? Imagine my surprise and delight to see a post from Alicia King! Alicia and i have a mutual acquaintance. In fact this person is more than a acquaintance to me. She's my wife Rebecca who went to SUNY Geneseo with Alicia in the early 80s. Nice to see you in here Alicia. Come by often!

So who's gonna tell me Alicia King sang Fallin' and then say oops it was Alicia Keys? Sorry beat you to it!
