LEGENDS 102.7: NOW THAT'S VARIETY FOR YOU!!

Hey! I have some down time again and I was catching up on the scuttelbutt on this board, all the posts are pretty much Right On! Not everybody likes liver, some do! It is well known some bees are not built to fly, they do! Same with music! How do they get away with such a musical mess? Simple! They like change! Ask Obama! All the stations these days follow the leader call letters change every 50 miles the tunes do not. Truth is legends is not everyones cup of tea and you can bet there are growing pains even with in the staff at 102.7 for some it is their first real dealing with this music and it shows. If they can gain ground in this market under these conditions, just wait until they get (Comfy) The fact that most all the posters know the music that they hate to hear says they did hear it at one time often enough to remember it. Legends is not making memories they are jogging them. Sinatra would not be Sinatra without the Big Band influence, Setzer would not be their if not for Big Band, one type of music grows from another they just show the progression. Every song comes from another in some way, Why is it wrong to show the progression when people like it. Being talked about is much better than being ignored!

Legends has survived the bullets sprayed its way and, i suspect, will continue to survive. The reports of its death will be grossly exaggerated!

DISCLAIMER to the Legends 102.7 people: I started this thread last August as a kind of jocular but, hopefully, constructive comment on your music mix and old PAMS jingles. I know many of the posters here join me in wishing you the best as colleagues and fellow radio people. IMO some of these comments are a tad harsh; I didn't mean to unleash a torrent of sentiment that hurt your feelings. As long as you're able to have some fun and sell some spots, you must be doing something right.

As far as "ask Obama" goes, I'm having some bumper stickers printed up to distribute through the Nojay Show:

"You wanted CHANGE? Well, we've got it...."

This thread just won't die... almost as bad as that "stiffs" thread!

In the words of Genesis i have "no reply at all' except to say keep listening to Legends 102.7 WLGZ where the Legends live. :)

Bad? Pshaw! People dig this thread because it strikes a chord. G# I believe. The Stiffs thread works because everybody has a favorite forgotten 45 or a secluded stiff that they remember or would like to hear again, if only once, on the radio. Hey RCS... let's not wade into the polute-ical quagmire and risk pushing either of these threads to the gulag known as "Take It Outside."

This thread may not be dead but it did lay dormant for several months.
Dale Dormant? Oops, wrong guy - that's Dorman :D What happened to him anyway?

Isn't he REALLY "Dormant?" Or was that Bud Ballou, his co-tormentor from the WNDR vs. WOLF days?

Not to worry, Monsieur Radknowski - no more politics, and besides, I wrote that comment to be political-conviction neutral! "Read it the way ya like it...."

Pretty good: this thread has now lived through THREE consecutive seasons. And "as I see by the ole calendar on the wall," it's about to flip over to Biiiig Number Four! Not bad for a good-natured wisecrack.

I was thinking more the RKO days (aircheck retro-mania - sorry :-[). I'm impressed with the stamina of this thread! That in itself goes to show you why some stiffs just keep on coming!!

Uh H that's another thread.
Um, NO. THIS thread. There is a reference by Mr. Radnowski at 4:34pm to the "Stiffs"thread to which I refer as a tie in. One must read the path you've been to know if you're getting where your going! Pope Savage has inexplicably begun a Reality Radio show by approaching a 4th season (according to "the calendar"). Besides the not so subtle promos, it has been pretty much commercial free. Just what the listeners want.

A group of us model railroaders have been getting together lately on Saturday nights to work on one of our layouts. The stereo is tuned to 102.7 and the "Rochester Rock Remember" show (I had to look up the title on the Legends website).

Most of the music played is literally "before my time"-- the #1 song the day I was born was "Hey Paula" (!). But I find myself really enjoying this show. There are a number of songs I don't recall ever having heard before and the host has been talking about the songs: year, chart position, background. Last week the host played some old WBBF (!) jingles.

The song requests have seemed to me to be fairly similar over the last few weeks, but that has not taken away from what I find to be an enjoyable show. To me this illustrates the "personality radio" we've been discussing from time to time.

Hey, any show that plays "Witch Doctor" is alright by me... :D

I'm actually beginning to really like that Legends Saturday night show. I just wish someone would send the host to an Adobe Audition class so he can learn how to boost the callers' volume. The station's compression can't do everything. Actually, most everyone over atg Lengends could benefit from knowing how to use the dynamics processor and the other audio enhancing devices inside of Adobe Audition. The jocks at PXY and BEE could teach a clinic.

Just a question, only a question. Are you saying that rather than air the purity of the call...the processing should cut in to enhance the experience and make them sound in-studio? Or is it just a "volume issue"? The "Legends" can only make it here by streaming so there is no "real time" when checking in to the feed.

Just in case my old weekender Joe Centanni is on the channel (we used to swap oldies and old radio stories for hours, plus we're old gear collectors):

Joe, once you've recorded your phone call, go to TRANSFORM. In the pull-down menu select AMPLITUDE, then DYNAMICS PROCESSING. Put your call through the VOCAL COMPRESSOR (my version of the software has a little subtitle, "great!") That will punch up the volume an intelligibility.

Alternatively do TRANSFORM, AMPLITUDE, and AMPLIFY. In the window type in the percentage of amplification you need (200%, 500% or whatever works.) Get the waveform to mostly fill out the screen and there will be enough volume.

Good Luck Joe - remember, I taught you everything you know....haw haw haw! ;) :D

Or, he could just "normalize" at -3dB (to avoid clipping). Adding another layer of compression is not a great idea when it's going to be processed by the air chain anyway.

Good Adobe advice Bob. I'd suggest addressing the issue before it gets to Adobe-Cool Edit Pro, Audacity or whatever's being used. I won't presume to know all the answers regarding the Legends phone situation; but initially, I'd back off the volume on the mic input to help minimize the disparity between the jock and the caller.

It might be helpful to bump up the phone input as well in order to further reduce the disparity between mic and phone. WHTT used ShortCut for phoners (and Adobe for transferring phoners to promos) in the studio. Making the aforementioned adjustments helps "beef up" the callers.

The ideal treatment to any level disparity between jock and phone levels would be to assign separate faders to the jock and phoners.

One more caveat about using the Vocal Compressor settings in Adobe/CEP to beef up phone-jock audio is that sometimes the settings can create massive noise on the phone audio and smashes the jock audio. You can experiment with the settings and find a very nice compression ratio that will treat a hot jock mic and low phone audio quite equitably.

You also can be painstakingly particular and block process the audio... way too time consuming.

And you can "gap" the phone audio in Adobe, so you can "talk to it" live while you're playing it back on the air, leading into the call live,

Jock: "Joe from Brockport is calling in... what can I play for you tonight?"
Adobe phoner: "I wanna hear Good Vibrations"

SILENT GAP or PAUSE

Jock: "Anybody you wanna give a shout out to"

Phoner: "Yeah, I wanna say hi to Connie and Charley"

Jock: "Nice work Joe, here's the Beach Boys on Legends"

(As Otis Day & The Knights once said in Animal House) HITITTT.

Start Good Vibrations, :00 Intro, w/wong theramin fade over vocal.

Just a suggestion from this radio junkie.
