LENO IS BACK...AND...WHAT?

I was doing my taxes instead of salivating over Jay's return.

Shows you where late night shows are on my priority list. ;)

I was asleep, so I didn't check out Jay Leno's triumphant return to The Tonight Show. (I did DVR it, but no time to watch yet).

I was expecting to see all kinds of posts this morning about how great or bad the show was...the Conan fans trashing the show, while the Jay lovers extolled Leno's virtues,

So...was everybody asleep like me? Anybody? Anybody?

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertai..._of_nbcs_tonight_show_is_slow_and_steady.html

I give Jay 1 year with this run on the tonight show.I dont see him getting the ratings he once had after about a week

Early reports is that Jay SMASHED everyone else last night...doubled Letterman and crushed Night Line.

I think Jay is going to be just fine.

Although I personally like Conan, he was a DISASTER at 11:30. Jay was a DISASTER at 10.

All is right with the world of Late Night.

Let's not get too excited, lots of sampling going on right now. Last night had a great deal of 'curiosity factor' associated with it. Give it a month and see where the ratings are - by then we'll start to have an idea of who's where.

Personally, I wanted to catch Jay - but getting up at 4:30 every morning makes it pretty tough! :D

I tuned in Jay for 20 minutes. After I saw that virtually nothing changed from his 10 PM show, I quicky switched to letterman and enjoyed a very funny show.

I taped him, something I never do. I don't know when I'll watch, and even then it'll just be the monologue. I'll update next week.

I think that is/was the problem and not the time so much. Leno's 10PM show looked almost exactly like the previous Tonight Show but didn't have the quality monologue writing or the occasional big names to make it attractive. It was kinda like Tonight Show Lite and suffered as a result. Unless the new Tonight Show gets some quality writing and decent guests it's just gonna be more of the same old and will probably slump back down to the former numbers pretty quickly.

Personally, NBC could dump Leno and C(BS) could dump Letterman and replace each with someone who knows either comedy and/or talk show. The hybrid junk with lame 'features' (like jaywalking and top ten) just doesn't cut it for me.

Most people under 40 don't watch traditional network late-night anymore (Leno only attracted nine percent of the 18-49 viewing audience according to Nielsen - less than one in ten in that age group!) You could probably only imagine how much weight the 55+ numbers carried.

Then there's the "hit piece" about Letterman based on a Vanity Fair article that NBC's Today Show ran this morning. Just by the timing of this, I have a feeling that this was intentionally done by NBC as "damage control" to take all the negative publicity off of Leno. story here

Meanwhile, it was an opportune time for the CBS "Early Show" to interview Howard Stern during his satellite radio show, and allow the Letterman pal to trash Jay Leno. It's on YouTube, search "Howard Stern on CBS 03-02-10."

I doubt NBC exercises any control over what gets published in Vanity Fair. Also - though I haven't read the VF article (and have no desire to waste my time doing so), I don't see how portraying David Letterman as somebody who has a Svengali-like effect on women hurts Letterman or helps Leno. This just adds fuel to the cult of personality that is developing around Dave...it will probably help his ratings.

Leno handled his return to the Tonight Show perfectly - low key: like being gone was just a bad dream (that Wizard of Oz parody), and was now back where he belonged. Whatever resentment and anger was felt toward Jay during the whole debacle will fade fast.

When celebrities are asked about Leno now, they all jump to his defense. Why? If for no other reason, they want to make sure they are welcome on The Tonight Show couch.

For those who missed it...a recap. (JLS = Jay Leno Show)

Opening skit featured Jay, Kevin, Ross, John Melendez (who is not returning), and Betty White.

Announcer same as JLS. Music updated version of JLS theme. Monologues are shorter than the old Tonight Show, but about the same length as JLS.

The desk is back. There was a whole skit on Jay finding a new desk. (Headlines returned on Tuesday). Old format of Guest 1, Guest 2, Musical Guest.

The set around where Jay does his monologue is awful. They also need to bring back John Melendez. I suspect there will be more changes to come as Kevin Eubanks prepares to leave.

Otherwise...I am glad he is back to where he belongs.

Nice cameo by Betty White in the opening sketch. She seriously needs to be on TV more. (How many 88-year-olds can you say that about?)

Oh yeah, the best thing about Leno back at 11:30? No more Earn Your Plug, Green Car Challenge, and 10@10!!!

I think the other comedy bits from the 10:00 show like JMZ (a parody of TMZ) and Bing Photo Search will remain.

I don't know about you guys, but 'Tonight' w/Leno Version 2.0 seems slower. Seems like some energy is gone or something is missing. :-\ Can't quite put my finger on it. ???

I think the set is way too large for a show like this... the audience is sitting too far away from Jay, especially when he does his monologue. The opening theme is too mellow... The old show had a more cozy look and an opening theme with quick cuts & more energy.

And the deal with announcer Wally Wingert... he must be under contract with NBC or Big Dog. I wonder if he had a year long contract with NBC for The Jay Leno Show, and instead of NBC breaking it and costing them more $$$, they just made him the Tonight Show announcer to honor it.

The overall tone & energy needs to be kicked up a notch. Finding myself yawning lately.

Based on what has happen so far, my opinion is that they're using Studio 11 as a temporary home for the Tonight Show. After all, this is a very sudden transitional phase that the Tonight Show is going though now. I think the energy from the old show will eventually return. At least the set looks better than before, although some will disagree with me.

It appears they're rewriting history in saying that Sarah Palin's appearance on Tuesday was her debut on the Tonight Show, even though she already appeared on Conan's Tonight Show back in December. Maybe I'm wrong and they meant in the combined history of Leno's Tonight Show leaving out Conan's era.
