Leno will have new set

TMZ reporting over the weekend that Leno will have a new set in the same studio where he did the Tonight Show. They also implied that this is the same studio that the Jay Leno Show has been using. (Although someone on this board said that wasn't the case, he was broadcasting from another Burbank studio?)... Bottom line, the brand new Conan set at Universal will evidently go dark, and perhaps utilized in other capacities. What a waste of NBC Universal dollars!

The Tonight Show and the Jay Leno Show were/are shot in two different studios on the NBC Burbank lot. From what I hear, they will continue to use the Jay Leno show set. It will have some tweeks done to it while the Olympics are airing to make it a more suitable fit for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Version 2.0. ::)

As for the Conan studio, it would not be surprising if Access Hollywood moves from the old Carson studio at NBC Burbank out to Universal to be closer to celebs that may be working on that lot.... Plus Conan's old offices would be a great fit for Access H'wood.

Jay moved to Studio 11 for The Jay Leno show. People at NBC have called it the studio that is cursed because many shows don't last long when they tape in there. We can now add The Jay Leno show to that list. The Tonight show was also broadcast from NBC in Burbank using a different studio since Leno took over. So I guess that is the same studio Jay will be going back to. They just plan on changing the set. I think that's a good idea. That Prime time 10 PM Jay Leno Show set was awful. It just looked plain flat. No dimension whatsoever.

Agreed, the Jay Leno Show set was awful. Never understood those strange designs on the backdrop.

Yes, when Leno took over Tonight, he moved across the hall in Burbank from the old Carson studio. TMZ says that is where he will return come March.

I think TMZ got it wrong that this is where Jay Leno was taped. The studios look entirely different when you look at the audience backdrop.

I guess this does put a somewhat damper in their plans to move out of Burbank by 2011.

But look at how CBS does it; they have two studios one for talk shows, game shows, and soap operas (Television City) and one for scripted faire (CBS Studio Center)

I can't see why they can't keep them both running. Make the Burbank Studios more like Television City and the other more for NBC-Universal produced scripted fare.

That's just a suggestion.

I'm sure NBC Burbank could lease out the studios and do what you described above. Many non-CBS shows are taped at Television City, like American Idol and, I believe, Dr. Phil.

I also remember that many CBS sitcoms in the 70s were not filmed (or taped) at Television City, but at Metromedia (now Fox) down the street. That always seemed odd, but if you're the producer, I guess it makes sense to film where you get the best facilities, or the best rents.

Dr. Phil is actually produced at Paramount Studios, in fact in the same soundstage where Arsenio Hall did his late night show.

Many of the CBS sitcoms of the '70s (the Norman Lear ones in particular) had moved from Television City to Metromedia Square in the mid-70s, and I believe that All in the Family was the last Lear sitcom to move to Metromedia. Sanford and Son was entirely produced at NBC Burbank, but its short-lived revival was done at Metromedia.

By around 1982, the Lear-produced shows that were still on the air (Diff'rent Strokes, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time, and Archie Bunker's Place) had moved production to Universal Studios Hollywood.

As far as NBC, the original plan when they announced the move to Universal City was that were they were going to lease out the soundstages at Burbank, while the Peacock holds on to the real estate. That's essentially what happened when Metromedia sold its stations to News Corp. in the mid-80s; Metromedia still owned the land, but Fox (and KTTV) leased the property. Metromedia Square no longer stands, as a public high school occupies that land; they tore down the studio lot in 2000, and the school opened in '08.

A side-bar...

I see that the Leno show is being "tapered" from the schedule both this week and next. Tonight, The Biggest Loser took the 10pm hour, and next week it looks like Leno will only do two nights. Probably a smart move...gradually make him disappear from 10pm.

I have a couple questions about this subject:

1. Is the old Leno Tonight Show stage still vacant? I know Conan's old Late Night stage now houses the Dr. Oz's show, so I was curious if another show was being taped at the old Leno Tonight Show stage.

2. Assuming that they're planning to move Tonight back to the old Leno Tonight Show stage, does anyone like to see a completely new set or instead have the Leno @ 10 set moved over and modified to this stage? I liked the old Leno Tonight Show set but I wasn't a fan of his new Leno @ 10 set. I also agree that the current Leno @ 10 set does seems flat.

That's all.

Conan's Super Mario Bros. backdrop for his monologue was very distracting. I would like to see curtains return as a backdrop for The Tonight Show monologue. Not the classic multicolored curtains Johnny used... but something maybe dark blue, etc. I think the wierd background concept thing is pretty much played out & run it's course. Give the Tonight Show a classic look again.

To set the record straight, the NBC studio complex in Burbank which also holds facilities for CNBC and MSNBC has been sold to a developer. Conan's Tonight Show had a set built on the Universal lot and ultimately all of the TV studios and offices will end up on land adjacent to the Universal lot in Universal City (Los Angeles). Somebody else will have to supply the details but I doubt that Jay Leno will be housed in Burbank, I don't know but assumed that his prime time show was based somewhere on the Universal lot as well.

Leno's 10 p.m. show was shot at Studio 11 at NBC Burbank. NBC still houses Access Hollywood and Days of Our Lives in Burbank. I've heard rumors that Leno is staying at Studio 11 and that he's moving back to Studio 3 (where he did Tonight for most of its run). He may eventually move to Universal -- or the next host might -- but I believe that NBC is leasing studio space back for various purposes.

That way, with all the cameras and other equipment still there, AH would be in high-definition (Entertainment Tonight easily beat them to the HD punch in 2008 when they moved from the Paramount lot to the CBS Studio Center).

And CBS Television City was where they had the Los Angeles portion of the "Hope For Haiti" telethon a couple weeks back. Also, until some years ago, another religious show called Television City home: "Helpline" with Morris Cerullo.

But like I said before...who really wants to see Billy Bush in HD?!?!
