Leno will have new set

Oops, let me retry this....


Do any of you know if it is possible to get a tour of NBC Burbank like they do with NBC NEW York? I would love to see Studio 1 (even though its now home to Access Hollywood) someday especially since NBC Burbank may be torn down if not sold off.

Also, I think from what I heard Jay Leno will be staying in Studio 11 from what other sources are saying. But the thing I don't understand is when Leno moved from Studio 1 to Studio 3 around 94 or 95 I think, it was because he wanted the audience closer to him where it was more intimate much like the clubs he was used to preforming in. Studio 1 nor Studio 11 really offer that since they are bigger than Studio 3. So I wouldn't be surprised if maybe they do go back to Studio 3. Is there a way to tell on the first episode of his NEW tonight show which studio he is in? Just curious.

Oddly enough, I have an interest in these old studios. I guess I am a bit of a dork!

Oh, and bonus points for who can answer this! Jack Paar did the Tonight Show out of 6B in New York Right? Well, when Jack Paar did his own television show after he did The Tonight Show, did he also film that show (The Jack Paar Show) in 6B even with Johnny doing the Tonight Show in that same studio?
 
NBC Burbank definitely has tours. I've been on them. Don't know how much it cost these days. Call (818) 840-3537 for information
 
There should not be a lot of huge changes to the Jay Leno Show set for Tonight Show w/Jay Leno 2.0, so it will be easy to spot. Also listen carefully to the audio. Stage 11 has a nasty echo sound to it that has never been fixed since the start of Leno's 10pm gig... sounds like the show is being done from a warehouse cause stage 11 is so big. The accoustics need to be worked on big time.

Leno's '94 or '95 set change was inspired by him doing The Tonight Show out of Studio 8H in NYC for a week. Leno liked the cozy intimate feel and had stage 3 in Burbank made to mimic the 8H feel.

As for The Jack Paar Show question... I have to ask around for that one.
 
I'll take an educated guess that Parr's primetime show was done in 8H, but just a guess. 8H was used in the 60's for specials, and for NBC's Presidential election coverage, using the two levels to make it look like a huge campaign newsroom. Very slick.

Also, on the subject of Parr's primetime show, he is thought to be the first to show concert footage of The Beatles in the U.S.

I've taken both the Burbank tour and the 30 Rock tour, both in another century. Unfortunately, they are presented for the masses, not for broadcasters, so they kind of talk down to those in the biz, but still interesting and fun to visit the various studios as long as they are not being used. Even more fun to attend a taping.

I always liked Burbank's tour better than New York's. It seemed more exciting to me. More going on. I got to visit the Tonight Show set, I also saw some set pieces from various game shows out in the hallway. The wheel from Wheel Of Fortune and The big neon Palm trees from Classic Concentration. Then I went to see some tapings on the same day. It just made for a fun experience. New York's tour was kind of dull in comparison. However these days with not much happening at NBC Burbank, that tour might seem a little dull now as well. I can't say for sure.

Quite the opposite now. I took the NBC Burbank tour and couldn't see the Tonight Show set (Leno was still there) because of a rehearsal (they need to rehearse bad interviews?). What we did see was Studio 1, former home of Johnny Carson. It was exciting for me, but lessened when it was obvious the NBC Page didn't know a whole lot about the Tonight Show of years past. But he was very enthusiastic about "Access Hollywood", studio 1's current tennant. We also saw the Days of our Lives set from afar -- couldn't actually go in studio. Really not that exciting...


However, 30 Rock is bustling with activity. On my most recent tour, we saw Fallon's studio, SNL studio (8H), an original "Triumph the Insult Comic Dog" (which is probably no longer on the tour) and the video they produced about the NBC history seemed better in NY than in Burbank. I would have liked to have seen the Today show studio too, but I was happy with what I got. 30 Rock is pricier these days, but worth it.
 
I was impressed with the NBC New York Tour. I got to see NBC Nightly News Set (which is now in a different studio since my visit in December of 2004) and the Saturday Night Live 8H Studio. I wanted to see 6A which is where Conan did his show at the time, but now 6B would be a great studio to see especially since there is more history to that studio. That it was where Jack Paar did the Tonight Show as well as Johnny Carson until 1972. Though, Johnny did a few episodes of the Tonight Show in 6A on occasion and I am also wondering if that is where Jack Paar taped his "Jack Paar Program" following his tenure on the Tonight Show. Brownie points still out there for who can answer that.

I am sorry to hear about the Burbank tour being a disappointment. They don't seem to advertise the Burbank Tour as well as they do with the New York tour. Still, I would love to see Studio 1 even though its home to a tabloid television show. Are there still any plans to tear that whole complex down in the near future?
 
I went to a taping of The Jay Leno Show in December and got to sit in the front. Atlthough I had not really liked the design of the studio at first on TV, seeing it in person is AMAZING. One of the coolest studios I've ever seen. The show filmed at Studio 11, which is on Bob Hope Dr.and the network might want to keep it there because the setup for the audience to come in is very organized.
I'm pretty sure NBC wants to keep Jay Leno in Burbank. Anywho, by the time people are actually considering doing something to the soundstages, Jay would have decided to retire for good and they would probably move it over to Universal Studios for good.
Here's a little question to you guys: with Comcast aquiring NBC, will Comcast move their cable networks studios (E!, Style Network, G4, etc) into Universal Studios? I know they have a little studio near Beverly Hills...
 
I've seen a couple of shows in studio 11. They used to tape "To Tell The Truth" there ten years ago. I think Family Feud as well. I know that I saw another show in studio 11 once, but I forget what it was. The Jay Leno studio may have looked good in person, but I prefered his other setup.

I'm sure "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was also done at Studio 11 before it moved to the Warner Bros. lot across town a couple years ago.
 
NBC is leasing back the lot that was sold to an L.A. developer in '08. For now, they are scrambling and want to keep revenue flowing, by whatever means, into the Burbank lot. So we will continue to see production coming from the lot, both NBC and syndicated, for the time being. When and if the economy recovers, NBC will continue its move to Universal. However, if NBC maintains a strong revenue stream from its Burbank facilties, who could count out a longer term relationship with this property? Beautiful downtown Burbank ain't dead yet.
 
Interesting. This new logo seems to highlight "The Tonight Show" more than Jay. Don't want to read toooo much into that, but....

Upon further reflection, didn't the very old Carson logo also highlight "the Tonight Show" as opposed to Johnny's name? Kind of retro in a way.
 
I suspect Stage 3 was already demolished and being used for another program. Not only that...they have only 2 weeks to make the changes. It would take NBC months to build a completely new set from scratch. Look how long it took NBC to start demolishing Conan's Tonight Show set at Universal. I suspected they started demolishing Jay's old Tonight Show set the day after Jay's last Tonight Show.

As for the logo...I thought that given the time constraints, as well as wanting to bring back the old glory days as quickly as possible, they would use the most recent Tonight Show with Jay Leno logo. As for the music...given Kevin Eubanks' pending departure, I wonder if the old music will be used, and the new musical director will be responsible for putting together a new theme.

As for the desk...it is anyone's guess. I anticipate a desk will return, but I think Jay is able to banter with his guests more without a barrier (the desk) in the way. Also up in the air is the Green Car Challenge and the race track out back. I guess we will find out on March 1st.
 
NBC Studio 6A

I think I read somewhere that Jack Paar's weekly NBC talk show was taped in studio 6A on Sunday nights for broadcast the following Friday night; the Johnny Carson Tonight show used it during the week.
 
Saw the first commercial earlier this evening for the "new" Tonight Show (I'll call it version 2.0) with Jay Leno. Jay is driving a car with the number "10" on the side. It peels off to reveal an "11:35." The music playing is very appropriate: "Get back to where you once belonged!" ;D I just wish we had a version for those of us here on central time with a "10:35" on the side of that car! 8)
