LEO VALOVICH

It is with deep sadness that I tell everyone of the death of long time radio performer Leo Valovich today. He was 70. While he may not have been a household name in all corners of the market, in the Hazleton corner, he was a legend. He was the host and creator of "The Make Believe Rainbow Room," which originated on the old WWSH-FM and continued for about 25 years on WAZL-AM. There was also a TV version on WYLN. It was a unique "theatre of the mind" show which mixed big band music, humor, satire and fantasy. There was nothing else on radio like it and there's never been a radio performer quite like Leo Valovich. His booming "Voice of God" was instantly recognizable. In his younger days, he was good jock and a good newsman. I heard his aircheck of him on the air on the old WTHT they day JFK was assassinated. I knew him very well. He was a good guy, a class guy and a very talented performer. He will be missed.

Very sad...a wonderful man. I had the honor of going with Leo one evening to a local drinking establishment and having quite a few brewskis as we talked radio...I'll always remember that night and that incredible voice.

Kevin, remember when you first put the original Mountain on the air and Leo did overnights for a brief period? AOR was well out of the range of things he'd done before, but he did it. He was a real pro; would do anything you asked. I even tapped him as an emergency newsman on occasion and he always did well.

i'm very surprised no one mentioned the mountain's (mountain of 1996) leonard the lyric lad (sometimes when we aired them, he cracked me up; and sometimes made me wonder 'what the hell'...tim boland hated it when i 'talked' back to leonard)...........leo was one of many characters in that bldg. in hazleton and will be truly missed; he always had that booming 'hello stooooooooosh' when i saw him................i never got to hear him introduce led zeppelin though

Leo told me he had no clue what he was reading when he did Leonard...LOL It added to the contest because he would read at his own gate

Waunder, Leo told me exactly the same thing -- "they just give me lyrics and I do my schtick." What a great guy he was. And I'm very happy to say the church was crowded for his funeral this morning. There was a good 70 people on hand -- and for a weekday, that was great.
