Let's Give Radio 92.9 some time.......

.........to do what, I dont know, but it seems awful premature to jump all over them right now.

granted, I dont dig it, and I'm a child of alternative music and alternative radio programming for nearly 25 years. I have never understood why you would expect someone to listen to Nirvana and the White Stripes and then stay tuned in for Dishwalla and Barenaked Ladies (all four played yesterday within 30 minutes of eachother), or vice-versa, but I'm sure these are some of the quirks and kinks 92.9 needs to get thru.

best wishes to the river.....let's see if they're wise enough to capitalize on a tremendous branding opportunity in the boston market. As for FNX and BCN, I just cant see their core jumping ship - that core has heard all these songs over and over and they're more interested in hearing new music - but I'm sure their TSL's wiil be impacted. 92.9's move may indeed allow FNX and BCN to expand their reach to play even more currents (or tomorrow's golds) and less of these 10-20 year-old burnt out golds, if they have the courage to program that way. it's a risk, but well worth it if done correctly.

Let's face it......the person who is going to love 92.9 is a child of FNX and BCN from the 90's. Which means if they were 25 years old back then, they're 40 now. They own ipods, they drive vws, they dine out a lot and the might own a condo. They've got kids, a better job, and spending less nights in the clubs. This might be the perfect tonic for them, and there's a significant number of them in the market.

Like I said, let's just sit back and watch this all play out. What's the worse that can happen, they get better ratings?

And no, I dont work for BOS, never have, and never will.

I am 39 years old and still listen to BCN, FNX and WAAF. The new 92.9 still sounds like the old tired BOS with a couple hard edge songs in the mix. I do not think a lot of guys my age are huge fans of Match Box 20, Bare Naked Ladies and some of the other lame artists that I've been hearing.

It would be great if they mirrored their playlist after artists you hear on FNX's Left Over Lunch with some currents thrown in.

Too late.....

My wife was a loyal listener - very annoyed they changed format. Told me today she wants to get another XM Radio and join me on the other side.

Music on FM is dead. Boring, repetitive, no local content (for the most part - I still listen to WQRC and WXTK on the Cape which have local news). If I want a jukebox I'll use my MP3 player.

Some AM around here is still great - WBZ, couple shows on WRKO. Since I've had my XM Radio I find I listen about 50% to AM, 30% to XM and 20% to FM (for the above two stations).

Again..I think there's a market for "classic alternative"

It's amatter of what definition they employ. Do they go Dishwalla, The Refreshments, and Live?

or...

Bruce Cockburn, Psychedelic Furs, and Echo?

Or

...do they try to pass Goo Goo Dolls "Name" and U2's pop stuff off as "classic alternative?

It can be done if balanced correctly. But they'd have had to have done a perceptual to find a hole wouldn't they?

Does one even exist?

i just looked at their playlist on yes.com. all that stuff was on wfnx and wbcn in the 80's and 90's. even the effin' pop crap like the spin doctors and stereo mc's but it was also played on mix and kiss. so they're molding 92.9 into top 40 alternative oldies which is what classic alternative is. the hits just keep on coming. they'll never dare to play iggy and the stooges. that would be real music and they'd need to hire talented people who didn't get to know alternative rock genre by listening trainspotting soundtrack.

I dont think Neaderpaul means Lust for Life...i mean that was in a cruise commercial.

And yes, Neaderpaul, they are going the way you wont be a fan of. Very Top 40 crossover alt songs. Basically the biggest alternative hits from 1990 to 2007 (including: Puddle of Mudd, Eve 6, Lit, Blues Traveler, DMB, Barenaked Ladies, Linkin Park, as well as big 80s hits from REM, Talking Heads, U2, Depeche, Cure).

For a guy who thinks FNX is too mainstream..you'll be extremely unhappy with WBOS.

What other Iggy could WBOS possibly play? FNX might play "the Passenger" or "Candy", but that's about the extent of his repertoire I'd expect to hear above 91.5 . Do perfectly radio friendly songs like "Real Wild Child" or "Blah Blah Blah" get any air more spins? "Sister Midnight" sure would be fun.

Not true - heard "Lust for Life" the other day.

you just made my point. the movie soundtrack came out in 1996 which is when most of the new 92.9's audience was first exposed to iggy's tune via 'bcn,'fnx, mix or kiss. their new format is based around successful, commercial hits or artists which is fine if you like background noise when you work in a cubicle, driving to work or talking on a cell phone. it's a far cry from the previous, more engaging format which was geared toward people who actually appreciated music that was played on the station or the jocks who were passionate about what 92.9 represented to thousands of loyal music fans in the local area. it wasn't a ratings getter by any means, but it was a unique product on the dial that advertisers sought out to sell to a unique audience. 92.9 is now in the same category as kiss, mix, magic, oldies, mike, etc. it has been turned into comfortable background noise for the mass consumption.

Sell to a "unique" audience that, by your own admission, is in the thousands. Or sell to the "mass" like KISS, MIX, MAGIC, MIKE, etc. and have an audience that is in the tens, if not, hundreds of thousands. From a business standpoint, you justified the flip!?!

i didn't justify it, their management did. just like they killed off smooth jazz in favor of talk, they killed of aaa in favor top 40 alternative gold. a mass format will bring you a lot more listeners who make 50 grand a year. niche formats will get you far fewer people who make 150 grand a year. per listener, you still come way ahead from lexus ads than you will from your hyundai or kia. it all depends where you want to take you business. the steak at abe&louie's will always taste better than that it will at the outback even if it came from the same cow.

And you have the data to back this up?? The funny thing is, a good friend of mine who works as a social worker for the state was a HUGE fan of WBOS, pre-flip, and makes far below 150K a year.

Does anyone really want to hear the Beastie Boys anymore?  With their three-year-old in the car?  Come on.

And all the lethargic angst-rock thrown in....we have 'AAF and 'BCN for that already.

I hate the new station.

To answer your question, I am sure there is someone with a 3 year old who wouldn't mind hearing the Beastie Boys in their car...

Far too soon to tell but what is it intending to offer that cannot be found in the other stations that play the same artists? A talk/jock free station playing Red Hot Chili Peppers is useless and pretty lame from what I've sampled. Seems there'd need to be some edge to it. What do I know, I'm a rock fan who likes talk radio!

Fundamentally, the station is boring, narrow and unlistenable for more than two songs.

If there is any ratings spike (and I doubt there will be), the audience will bore so quickly the station will be left in the dust.

At least WBOS had a loyal and lucrative audience (although that lucrative audience bought cars that came with Sirius and XM).

...you also think KISS's demo is teens...just saying...

Actually, I have a close friend who has TWO children, 5 and 1. And the listens to death metal bands like Slayer and Nile(Pretty sure you've never heard of them, look them up). Don't just think because you're close-minded that other people are.

You also generate false conclusions.  Just because I note that Kiss appeals to teens doesn't imply that I said that's their only demo, right?
