let's start it now...

Since we're at the earliest 6 months away from a new station in Columbus on 106.7 FM, what format would you like it to be? Me personally would like to see an alternative "Channel Z" type station, or a true 80's station like what 107.9 used to be.

Not only a CHR/Rhythmic but a DECENT - CHR/Rhythmic. I think it will be Wild 106.7. From my understanding Wild 93.9 is doing some impressive stuff in Lima. Only format I can think of that won't actually compete with it's other stations.

To the basics of this post though...a Decent CHR/Rhythmic would be nice.

It would step all over WNCI. Won't happen.
______________

Check Boston. They have a CHR/Pop and a Rhythmic that both do well and are owned by CC. It will be aimed at WCKX, not WNCI. It will be like a sellable urban.

Check the population of Boston. Completely different market.
______________

Do you think CC is going to sit by and watch a 1,900 watt urban station get an 8.3 share?
I see your population point, however look at Boston and see how many stations there are.

On a differnt note, the path is also clear for Ohio's first commercial Triple A station. A triple A would do well here in my opinion with the sophisticated folks among us. They could have all the shops on High Street in the Short North advertise on there. I think it could also do a lot for commercial radio in general and give people less of a reason to subscribe to satellite.

The reason I don't think CC will do a CHR/Rhythmic here is that for some reason Radio One is not an enemy in Columbus. Radio One hasn't fought any of the CC move-ins that I'm aware of so far. I would think if CC was planning a direct competitor for Radio One, they would have been more vocal than they have. On the other hand, Radio One could be completely oblivious to what is really going on.

I expect to see something adult-based to complement 93.3, either AAA/Adult Alt or Smooth Jazz. Don't get me wrong, I would love another CHR, but I just don't see it coming from Clear Channel. Wouldn't a rimshot CHR on 103.1 or the current Smooth Jazz frequencies be fun!
______________

Next February at the earliest? Just curious what you base that on.

With saga working and planning on moving 103.5 to Pickerington, a CHR on 103.5/104.3 would be fun but I dont see them doing that. It would give CC or someone else too easy an idea to change to a smooth jazz format.
______________

How about a nice "authentic sounding" oldies station with the old school jingles, liners, etc. I'm not a CC fan, but they do a good job of this with WMJI in Cleveland.

Hah scarry thing is, if they can get this station on by years end, CC might actually DO that!

They did that on 1230 when they brough back the old WCOL calls to that frequency, and they even used some of the old jingles from the 60's, and it lasted a year. The station went nowhere, and that's why it's now Progressive Talk.

But that's on AM. Entirely different story. But I still don't think CC would do oldies here, even on FM. MJI is a good station, but helped by big-time station heritage. Even if CC Columbus were inclined to try FM Oldies, they'd overlap bigtime with the 93.3 format that I'm so fond of (cough, cough).

AAA would make sense. So would Smooth Jazz, especially if they're gunning for Saga.

I note that CC, which hasn't done many Jack-like stations, just started one in Louisville called Louis. This station took over rock WTFX's frequency, bumping the Fox to a suburban simulcast. Maybe they think they could wipe away Ted in short order with, say, Chris. Of course, Nabco is no longer the big nemesis that it was when Jacor owned LVQ. And Ted no longer proclaims, "We're not owned by Clear Channel. Now, isn't THAT refreshing." (Maybe Fish realized he'd better not taunt CC, since some CC stations in other markets are core clients of his on-the-side internet-request-notification service.) OTOH, Nabco WAS one of the parties opposing the CC move-ins. But so was Infinity.

Anyway, in line with my frequent rant about how CC's Columbus management has a pathological fear of even the tiniest musical overlap between their properties, I'm placing my bets on all-Polka.

Regarding the 103.5 Saga move-in mentioned above, does anyone know tha status and/or how good the signal will be?
______________

So, let me get this straight, I take it the point is that CC will use their might to kill a competitor, just becasue they can, because a small station is actually sucessful?

No, my point was that they probably see an opportunity, not to kill a competitor like you presumed, but to capitalize on a hot format.

Not sure what their pattern will look like yet because its still in the table of alotments change stage (like CC had to push to create a allotment in dublin ohio and remove marion's) saga is having to do that with 103.5, remove the lancaster allotment and request "first radio service" for pickerington... and we know how fast the FCC loves to move so it's a wait and see.

103.5's lancaster signal puts ok into columbus now from the tower near baltimore Ohio, I assume if Saga wins FCC approval to move to pickerington (they would have to put a Grade A over pickerington, so thus they should put a fairly decent signal into columbus (wont be as good as the CC 93.3 or 106.7 move ins) but it will be another player in the market. (if they dont keep it smooth Jazz with 104.3)
