LET'S SUGGEST SOME FORMAT CHANGES FOR 2012!

I'd like to suggest some format changes for 2012:

590 AM-Stays the same.
680 AM-Goes back to Top 40(adds FM simulcast on WAAF HD4)
740 AM-Continues its beautiful music format, but adds paid ethnic programs on weekends
850 AM-Closes the sports talk and goes to ethnic programming
950 AM-More of the same
1030 AM-Goes back to full service format with talk and music mixed in 24/7 with live news on the hour and half hour. Plus the traffic on the 3s, weather on the 10s and breaking news when it happens. Also, bring back JJ Wright and next Christmas go holiday music commercial free for 30 hours.
1090 AM-Get out of our face and take your CRI Commie crap!
1150 AM-Comfortable with the Spanish religious format
1200 AM-Go back to Spanish tropical
1260 AM-Get rid of the HD signal and get rid of the mouse! Bring back beautiful music/MOR
1300 AM-Stays the same
1330 AM-Ditto
1360 AM-More ethnic programming(consign the Music Of Your Life to midnight to dawn)
1430 AM-Go dark
1510 AM-Spanish 24/7
1600 AM-Add FM simulcast
1620 AM-Move AM 1430 to this frequency, increase power and retain its Hispanic format

On the FM side, the noncommercial radio stations should expand their playlists with WUMB getting rid of its "music mix" and going back to its folk and roots heritage
For the rest:
92.5 FM-Mix up the format-add prograssive rock on HD2
92.9 FM-Continue its regular schedule during the day and do ethnic shows at night with Radio You continuing on HD2 and Latino programming on HD3
93.7 FM-Stay with sports on HD1, bring back Funkytown on HD2, add Latino reggaeton on HD3 and put Mike FM on HD4.
94.5 FM-Expand the playlist and get rid of voice tracked announcers on HD1, do unedited rap and hip hop on HD2, batchata and salsa on HD3 and anime music on HD4
95.3 FM-Stay as you are on HD1, add a classical channel on HD2, do jazz on HD3 and put Record Hospital on HD4(Have Hillbilly At Harvard, Blues and Darker Side online as streaming stations)
96.9 FM-Stay with what you've got on HD1 and keep The Irish Channel on HD2. (Add world music on HD3)
97.7 FM-Switch to oldies on HD1, air hard rock on HD2 and add WRKO on HD3. Online, you can add about 10 rock and pop streams.
98.5 FM-The Sports Hub's doing well, WBCN stays on HD2, but drop WBZ News Radio on HD3; replace it with comedy.
99.5 FM-Get back to beautiful music and sponsored programming.
100.7 FM-Add more alternative music to your classic rock mix, keep Mojo Blues on HD2, Freeform 'BCN on HD3 and move WBZ News Radio 1030 down to HD4. (Add online channels for extended tracks.)
101.7 FM-The station's run its course. Move to heavy metal and hardcore. Add an HD2 channel for alternative
102.5 FM-Drop country and go back to classical music. Have a full playlist with no more dumbing down. Run classic country on HD2, hot country on HD3, and crossover classical on HD4. Add an online stream for opera and one for jazz
103.3 FM-Go back to oldies music. Play oldies of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s, and add some new music. Keep the Cove on HD2, MercyRock on HD3 and add a Gary Lapierre channel on HD4 with 'round the clock Lapierre on the Loose commentaries and his playing of Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol." And of course, during December, play Christmas music, but widen the playlist to include new wave, standards from the 50s, 60s and 70s, as well as new Christmas songs. Online, you can put together a channel that plays music for St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, summer time and all the patriotic holidays, as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.
104.1 FM-Get rid of Mix! Put WBCN back on that frequency and consign Mix to 104.1 HD2. Get rid of Can't Beat Kennedy and give her and Karson their own HD3 channel. Have an old time radio channel on HD4. Get rid of Astrology radio and put it online, along with a Catholic music channel.
105.7 FM Switch to country and western on HD1, have 70s and 80s music on HD2, 50s and 60s music on HD3 and new music on HD4. Add some Loren and Wally stuff online.
106.7 FM-As they are on HD1 and HD2. Add a holidays all year long channel on HD3.
107.3 FM-Keep the regular format here, with the oldies on HD2. Punk rock on HD3 and big bands on HD4.
107.9 FM-Get rid of all voicetracking and have Live DJs all the time. Also, play more new music and bring back disco! HD2 should play The Music Of Your Life, while HD3 does Latin love songs and CHR. And put WUNR Brookline's feed on HD4. Add a few specialty channels online.

Also, we should expand the AM band to between 400 and 2000 kHz. and extend the FM Band to 76 to 113 mHz. This would allow so-called pirate radio stations to apply for legitimate licenses and serve their respective communities.

So if anyone has issues about this, you're welcome to drop your two cents worth in.

Wow. If I had suggested that 102.5 go to all-classical with expanded playlist and no dumbing down, Scott Fybush would have described it as Glavin-speak!

How about if Howie goes to morning drive on WTKK and Jimmyand Margie take full time jobs with Obama's campaign?

680--do you mean top 40 current (Lady Gaga etc.), like today's kids would tune to AM? Maybe if it's Radio Disney playing some top 40--or do you mean the oldies that they used to play as current hits in 60s and 70s? Would they stay talk if Howie leaves? Who'd replace him, Joe Battenfeld? Surely some would suggest "ESPN 24/7" (or run Yahoo sports when EEI is doing ESPN), prog. talk, brokered, who knows.

If 850 dropped sports where would Sox or Celts, etc. go in a conflict? (RKO maybe)
I'd suggest 1200 stay the same, or have Ent, sell RKO to CC and have Katz, Sev. & conservative talk on RKO
(find a home for Finneran and Feinburg maybe)
1510 Spanish? But what becomes of Occupy Hippie radio?

WMWM 91.7--move to a freq where they can greatly increase power :)
97.7: Entercom would not want to ditch the AAF simulcast
Keep WCRB and WKLB as they are. KLB gets good ratings, or they did...Though you do say country on 105.7

You forgot 99.1--prog talk...slogan, we are the 99.1" ::)

Why use WAAF HD4 when WAAF is not (currently) using their HD2 or HD3 anymore? It wouldn't make sense to skip from HD1 to HD4. It would sound much better on HD2.

93.7 FM-... bring back Funkytown on HD2...

It's still there!!

blackgold said:
94.5 FM-... do unedited rap and hip hop on HD2...

HD subchannels are subject to FCC fines for obscenity just like analog/HD1 channels.

None of the student-run college stations in the area want to pay Ibiquity for HD

(WERS has it, but is administration run).

blackgold said:

They want this to simulcast 107.3 to fill in the signal in Boston.

blackgold said:

No independent or semi-independent commercial stations in the area (92.5, 99.1, 101.7) want to pay Ibiquity for HD.

I think the purpose of this thread is to tease mine in the Philadelphia section.

WJIB-740 stays as is (adult standards), and has only 1 half-hour church on Sunday mornings. No other brokered time above that half-hour, and there won't be any more.

I think blackgold just set a new world record for both contradicting himself (see WRKO and WAAF-HD4) and blatantly ignoring reality. Putting so many formats where no one can hear them, on HD subchannels, means they might as well not exist at all. Killing automated formats is very appealing, but the money to hire live bodies has to come from somewhere, and in the present broadcasting economy that money doesn't exist.

Radio is a business, not a conglomeration of pipe dreams. Leave business to business people.

is blackgold related to lauro at all???

I think blackgold's radio dial is fun to contemplate, with a little something for everyone, but as everyone notes it is never going to happen in this market and in this economy. Lauro just seems obsessed with urban contemporary and obscure rhythmic music. No harm done.

Right on Bob B. This guy with all these HD4s. That would mean all 4 HD channels would sound like garbage. Shame Freeform BCN is on a HD3. The only one that may change is 850 AM going to ESPN in 2012. One idea that would be bad is if some of the AM s lease HD subchannels from the FMs that dont have HD yet.

Okay, here's mine, without HD stations. I don't think these changes would be radical.

680 goes all business, no Howie
850 goes to ESPN radio
1030 eliminates informercials, adds more hours of news
1200 stays the same
1430 stays the same, emphasis on Talk Right
1510 stays the same, emphasis on Talk Left
92.9 stays the same
93.7 stays the same
94.5 stays the same
96.9 more political talk on weekends, no Howie
98.5 stays the same
100.7 stays the same
101.7 switches to Spanish CHR (long overdue in Boston!)
102.5 stays the same
103. 3 more emphasis on classic pop hits
104.1 stays the same
105.7 more emphasis on classic rock hits
106.7 stays the same
107.9 stays the same

I'm not sure that what Entercom is running on WEEI-FM HD2 is the same "funkytown" it used to be. I used to listen to them quite a lot when Star 93.7 changed to Mike. At first, "funkytown" was similar music to what Star 93.7 had been, but now it's a different animal completely. I've never heard most of the songs before (whereas Star 93.7 played a lot of Motown). I wonder if Entercom is using a different satellite feed from a different supplier, and that's why the streaming has stopped.
