Lets talk about Stunting

The computer voice countdown was cute the first time i heard it back in the 90s...

I heard a station play a heartbeat sfx for a stunt

There was the endless versions of wild thing before 98 flipped to oldies

I worked at a station where "Achy Breaky Heart" was played over 50 times in a row.

DE's brother flipped a station while the Macarena craze was sweeping the nation. So, prior to the station's flip, they stunted "All Macarena" for a few days, complete with imaging, and produced liners. It actually sounded pretty good.

It got significant media play, even well outside the market. He was called at home by NHK, the Japanese network, about it. His answer, "Well, The Macarena is the number one song in the world. By playing ONLY it, we can't help but be the number one station on Earth."

Of course, Clear Channel owns that station now (I'm thinking it was Paxson while this was happening), so nothing as imaginative as that will happen there again. It might cost money, after all.

But, as has been pointed out, listeners don't care about stunting; in fact, it may just confuse them. But, it amuzes us, and that's what's important, right?

Yes, but what was the stunt? ;D

a whole weekend of rock and roll by led zeppelin when wrno new orleans flipped from z rock to rock around 1993. also mix 96 jackson (now us96.3) pl;ayed a weeklong loop of wind blowing back in the late 80s..playing a liner saying the winds of change are blowing in jackson and gave a number to call for suggestions. also when cajun 103 baton rouge flipped to cat country in 1998 they did the automated t- minus countdown all weekend long..

I don't know if these are considered stunts based on defination. I also like dj stunts not authorized by management. They might be more pranks.

1) The taste like chicken one when the Buzz took over Froggy was good.
2) Ron Olsen, I believe in the late 70's, played Rolling Stones song over and over until they decided to play a Memphis gig thus saving his job.
3) Didn't Ric Dees lock himself up in a Memphis control room and play a song over and over?
4) Ron Olsen claiming Motley Crue was going to be at the library was a hoot for April Fool's.
5) I remember the morning my friends and I realized Rock 103 had changed from Z103 back to Rock. One night you heard Madonna and Prince, then next morning you heard The Who and Freebird. I don't remember any warning messages for the changeover. It was confusing. We thought an Arkansas station was bleeding through for days. It usually did back then.
6) The weirdest one was 107.5 playing music from the 20's to today before they went with KISS format.

I am sure they are others.

When the new $20 bills came out, Ron Olsen announced that people had until 4pm that day to trade in their old $20 bills, or else they would be worthless.

Apparently, all the calls to the Federal Reserve in St. Louis shut down the phones. Ron got a call from the government telling him to go on-air and retract the statement.

Priceless.

All that aside, Olsen still refers to the place he works as ''FM a-hunnert.''

Hey, Meep, when are you on the air, next?

Oh yeah...you're not. Olson will be on FM A-Hunnert for quite a while...Give it up.

Hey DK...bite me.
Give WHAT up? You have issues.
And when HAVE you been on? Oh yeah....YOU HAVEN'T!
Some people work in radio behind the scenes FOR A REASON!

I have no particular issue with Olsen...I'm just looking at facts.
(and by the way...I have had MANY chances to get back on the air- nice try at a shot even though it fell a bit short)
The ratings they get for the dollars they spend SIMPLY DO NOT MATCH!
Now, I've read all your posts here and I bow to your superior intelligence.
But, get a little "Spock" here and think logically.
According to even your own remarks about ratings at FM100...they simply aren't getting they're $$'s worth.
As someone who has worked for ENTERCOM (have YOU by the way?) I can tell you that from top to bottom, they'll spend the money IF they're getting their monies' worth. If not, they won't.
People matter little...loyalty matters little...(see Steve Butler...whose ratings were much better than Ron's at the time)...all that matters is $$, and the value of the station or property for the next deal.

Are you related to Ron or something?
Format flip or not...There are more people over there that will go.
wanna do one of those steak dinner bets?

Enjoy your bagel!

Meep!

Regardless...Ron's the man.

He may be on the whitebread, wholesome radio station...but get that guy off air and he's the funniest dude ever.

Now, back to my own turmoil in the dirty south.

Like I said...I've only met him a time or two and I have no particular problem with him.
Years ago, I got 'faced with him and Conley at a 4th of July thing at Tom Lee park.
A good friend of mine was there then, and we had a blast!

Does anyone know where I can get the computerized voice counting down from 100,000 or 50,000? I've used a program online where you type in the words for the computer to say - BUT I don't feel like sitting there going 500,000 499,999 499,998 499,997 499,996 499,995. Maybe a program can read from a spreadsheet.

Anyone got an idea or source?

Mikey:

The folks at Citadel have done that in the past.

Call "IL"... of all people, you know he should have the answer.
