Letterman inks CBS deal for 4 more years

So then, Leno can still maintain bragging rights for leaving..."while on top"
following in Carson's foot steps...right?

Leno already has those bragging rights, as Letterman is far beyond "the top" and is swiftly descending. Just look at their monologues and see the difference. Leno is high energy and plays off the crowd; Letterman tells one joke after another in disjointed style, with the audience laughing I think only because they're supposed to. He's just not funny anymore.

Just my opinion.

Leno has never been funny. Letterman's humor is not the "let's make sure all the soccer moms think I'm funny" schtick Leno does, nor will it ever be.

:-[ Great *sarcastic* ...4 more years of hearing Paul Shaffer repeating everything that Dave said...trying to take the spotlight away from whoever is on, and putting himself in the spotlight...and that very annoying fake laugh of his. That's one reason why I have stopped watching David Letterman, because of Paul Shaffer.

Leno and Kevin...good team together
Conan and Max...great time (they are different from night and day, but it works well)
David and Paul...horrible, get rid of Paul and it would be better.

Just my opinion....

I agree. I love Letterman's bits and interviews but Paul drives me nuts. The nights when Paul is absent are the ones I enjoy the most.

The nights when the late Warren Zevon filled in for Paul were the best.
Dave never knew exactly what he would do or say. So it made for good tv.
Its too bad I didn't tape the full show Dave did with Warren prior to his passing.

Hey, Letterman hasn't been funny since he hosted the 1995 Oscars. The rest would be history when Leno had Hugh Grant on his show just moments after he got caught with a hooker.

No wonder why "The Daily Show" and its writing staff have been collecting Emmys the last few years.

Jonathan Allen

If you all want to see someone funny, stay up AFTER Letterman and watch Craig Ferguson on CBS.

Now he TRULY is a funny guy. Gets up for about 15 minutes for a monologue and he doesn't have any cue cards, nothing. It is all off the top of his head. The guy is so much more funny than Letterman, Leno or Conan, it isn't even a contest.

He had done so well, from my understanding, Johnny Carson's former producer has come out of retirement to help his show along.

You don't bring in somebody from outside because a show is doing so well.
You bring somebody in to fix things.

Fred de Cordova is a hack.
He destroyed the hip edgy New York based show Carson did originally.
He made the show a G-rated Las Vegas show for your parents to watch.
He made it a home for Bob Hope, Buddy Hackett and the rest of the over the hill gang.
He should have gone into retirement 20 years sooner.

Before that, he managed to ruin The Jack Benny Program and The George Burns - Gracie Allen Show.
Before that he directed Reagan in Bedtime For Bonzo.
He is the ultimate show biz hack, who keeps getting work no matter how terrible his track record.

Now he has another show to kill.

Gentleman:

Please have the facts straight before posting here.......

Craig's show is a "Worldwide Pants" production.......Letterman's company.......

Letterman brought in Peter Lassally to help Craig..............

AS already pointed out here Fred is dead......he did so many great things in TV....

and he is called a "hack".............shame on you..................

Letterman has received so many writing awards and nominations for his show

many many more than Leno................

The only other thing I will say is that even if you could add Letterman and Leno

together the product would still not equal Johnny Carson.

And Carson didn't equal Jack Parr or Steve Allen.
Copies are never as good as originals.

Carson knew who was funny ...........................please read this article

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6841123/

I Loved Steve Allen and remember well the occassion when I met him.

Steve was a true genius,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Jack Paar was a fine host in his own right......

But Carson prefected the late night talk show..............if we are to accept the

logic of someone who posts here frequently.......... then the absolute kings of

late night would be Jerry Lester and Morey Amsterdam the original hosts

of "Broadway Open House" which was the predecessor of the "Tonight Show"

Sorry, Broadway Open House was nothing like The Tonight Show.

The predecessor to The Tonight Show was a local late night radio show, with studio audience, Steve Allen did on KNX, Los Angeles. The became so popular, they moved it into one of the auditorium studios at Columbia Square which CBS used for prime-time network shows.

But the genre which includes The Tonight Show (comedy talk-variety built around a host) was probably invented by Don McNeil.

Fred,

Maybe you are dead as well? ;D

I don't know who was brought in to "help" Craig's show but it really is a funny show and I think it is MUCH better than his competition on NBC at that time slot.

For him to be able to get up and do 15 minutes of "improv" more or less is truly amazing on a daily basis in my opinion. Don't really care for much of the "skit" he does each night between his monolouge and the first guest, but overall, it truly is an entertaining show almost every night.

Jay, you said the show brought in Johnny Carson's producer.
Who is Fred de Cordova. Or was.

Correction has been posted: It's Letterman's former producer.

When Letterman did the Late Night show on NBC, it was owned by Carson's production company. As Letterman's company now owns the Late Late show on CBS.

However, I have not watched that show since Tom Synder left.

"The Daily Show" and "Colbert Report" are the funniest things on late night TV.

That said, I'd watch Letterman any day over Leno. Sure, Letterman's monologues are a bit disjointed, but that's the way Letterman has always been, going back to the 80s (even his original daytime show, which I do remember liking as a kid).

I always get the feeling Leno is trying too hard.

Oh, and Conan is great, and will make a great Tonight Show host.

Never really got into Craig Ferguson. I guess I'll have to give him another try.

And one name not mentioned here is Jimmy Kimmel. Sure, he can't hold a candle to the other guys, but his monologues with the phonied-up news clips are hilarious.

Of course, the king of 'em all is Carson. A real class act. And no, his show was not a G-rated Las Vegas extravaganza. Carson could get a little ribald once in a while, but nobody could ever perfect what the man did.
