Lew Dickey is too scared to read this!

Why play the '60s and '70s against each other? Why not play music from both decades? They were both great decades for music! I'm not sure why "oldies" stations were loath to play anything after about 1975, but that may have been their downfall. The definition of what was considered "oldies" wasn't "fluid" enough. So it fell to stations playing "classic hits" to play stuff from the later '70s, and the '80s.

The only "oldies" station we have left here in the Nashville area is 101.7 WKOM in Columbia, and they seem to use the terms "oldies" and "classic hits" somewhat interchangeably. They are a syndicated, voice-tracked station. I don't believe you would otherwise be able to find a station so well programmed in a small town like Columbia. They seem to play mid '60s to about mid '80s. That was my time frame! 8)

Why play the '60s and '70s against each other? Why not play music from both decades? i concur completely..but why stop there..my little toy station i play with on weekend nights has a play list primarily from 63 through 93, complete with 1000 spots from that time era as well as 300 jingles from many of the big rockers around at that time. even without any promotion at all, i have roughly 20-25 people stumble on it..and usualy about half that amount hang around for a couple of hours...the ones that leave are kids i'm guessing just sampling what they've found and don't care for music older than they are..either that or they camera scares the hell out of them seeing some old geezer sitting there under the black light swilling beer..lol. it's no problem at all to mix that format..but it does take someone that knows how to do it..(shameless self promotion).. ;D and it's a lot of fun..no corpse suits telling me what to do.. ;)

You sit there swillin beer? Whew. that makes me feel better. I thought I was the only one who sat there at night swilin beer while thinking about them (Those) good ole days. ;D

This is the way to do it, if it was a hit from the 60's through the 90's, play it. Everyone has a different opinion about this touchy subject. I have just one thing to say, we cannot make everyone happy with the traditional radio we have now. It's going to take HD on FM to make everybody happy. Everyone on here as their opinion about what Oldies and Classic Hits should be. Right now, with the state the FM band is in Nashville, is a mess, and everyone has their opinion about what an Oldies format should be.

If we don't act now, the people who enjoy the 60's music will die off, just like the people who grew up to the 50's music are dying off. Everyone on here as a different view of what an Oldies station should be. Rock-n-Roll is over a half century old. I can't say what the answer is, everyone's views has me confused. I know one thing; the FM Band in Nashville needs to be straightening out. Thanks to Cumulus, it's a mess!

I'm not a consulant, I just know what my what I hear, and like I said, this market does not have a balance diet of good formats.

The reason of only a handful of Oldies stations being done right and they're all in larger markets than Nashville is because that's where your major talent who understands the Oldies format is found.

No, it's where the MONEY is. That's what it takes to pay air talent. Unless you think Coyote McCloud is gonna work for free. A station in a market this size simply can't make enough money to pay a full time staff of legends.

I thought I was the only one who sat there at night swilin beer while thinking about them (Those) good ole days. Grin well stop thinking..lol..and tune in..can't do it weeknights..but soon i'll have it scheduled to run 24/7..as it is..i'm on sat and sunday nights 7 until midnight..or until the beer runs out...... :-*

Why is it you think Coyote McCloud has to be the morning man on Nashville's Oldies Station? That Stupid Statement! I not knocking the man, he is a good man, BUT there is other good talent out there besides him. Nashville does not necessary got to have Coyote as the morning man. I can tell you from people I talked to at my former "real job" outside radio, not everybody liked Coyote. The same would go to Larry Lujack, Don Imas, etc.

At one time people that listen to WLS thought they had to have Larry Lujack in the morning. Wrong! While Lujack was at WCFL in the afternoons in the early to mid 70's, I think the morning man was Fred Winston and WLS still had good numbers, mornings & afternoons!

There is other talent that is good and dying to get in a position like that. You should not reserve it for one person. That's discrimination! Wonder if a woman wanted it and be on with another woman as a side kick on an Oldies Morning Show on a Nashville FM. Is that WRONG? NO is the answer! You do not have to pay high salaries to get quality! Wonder if the person is black or Latino? You cannot kick anybody out. Lawsuits would be flying everywhere!

Why do you think we have to staff an FM Oldies station with legends? Just because WLS-FM has legends on doesn’t mean we, or any other Oldies FM station has to.

This is what is wrong with Urban Stations like 92Q. They think they must have Tom Joyner on to make money. That thinking is crazy! Tom Joyner just talks and talks and you do go to hear TWO songs per hour on his weekday morning show from Dallas. Some people want some music in the morning, not just a bunch of non-sense talk!

"You do not have to pay high salaries to get quality!"

Shh! Don't say that too loudly...

As far as The Big A's comment, it sounds like he's talking out of his "A"! :D

I don't. I was just using him as an example. Once Cumulus fired him, he left town for a job at a station in Colorado Springs where he cut his hair and tells the people there how much he prefers snow to Nashville's humidity.

My point isn't to promote one person over another, but to say that ANY credible people who get hired to play oldies will expect to get paid good money. And the bad news is that the oldies format in a market the size of Nashville won't allow for that station to afford the quality of talent the audience will demand. The Oldies audience is very demanding. They want to hear their favorite songs in an environment they remember. That is very expensive to do today.

You won't believe anyone who doesn't agree with you. But there still is no FM oldies station in Nashville, and if I was wrong, there would be.

when did coyote leave ? i thought he retired and was living out there on his houseboat ? granted i don't keep up with any air talent around town..what little there is..but i would thought i would have heard of him leaving through mutual friends..what format is he working in colorado springs ? ???

Big A - don't know who that Coyote is but he's not ours. doesn't look like him...and Coyote would not trade his houseboat on Percy Priest for Cold.

Scott....I don't care for Conan O'Brian...but there are people who do, obviously.
All in radio know we're not liked by everyone..but that's cool.. that wouldn't leave any jobs for others.
And you never worked for the Sewage Treatment Plant did you? That's what radio saved me from. That's a real job.

your right..an imposter to be sure..but i do recall googling coyote once and seeing a couple other "coyotes" come up..this must be one of the ahhemm..better dressed ones..lol..surely someone on the board could find out his current where-a-abouts...or do we need to call DAWG..the coyote hunter ?? ;D

just checked his facebook..is it me..or does that pic kinda resemble scott shannon ? i know they were brothers in arms for years..probably the lighting in my room..or the beer induced eyesight..

No I never had to work at a Sewage Treatment Plant, but I did have to mess with nasty produce at a local grocery store when I was 16, unloading trucks. I got the heck out of there. I never really wanted to be a jock on the air, I wanted to be in engineering. I'd rather work on the board, transmitter, cart machines (back when we used them) audio processors, etc.

I had to be a jock to get in the door, but I had one thing that you probably didn't have, a parent that helped me get there.

Oh, I'm not a Conan O'Brian fan either. I think Jay Leno is better!

Remember this is what makes all of us humans better, it's not a perfect world, you may like peanut butter, and I may not. It's in the Bible.
