Leykis loses national syndication

I tried listening to Leykis a few times, but I never got into the show. It was always the same thing. Nothing against Tom. If nothing else, he is always consistent in his views, but I didn't feel the show was worth listening too every day.

I met Tom and his crew when I worked at KLLI. All of them are good dudes, but this just goes to show you schtick gets old. I ran boards for Tom locally and enjoyed his show quite often. After I left Live I only listened every now and then. It just got old. Tom, Gary and Deano are good guys and a lot of fun to hang with. I wish them well in their next radio career, if there is one. These type of shows just come to an end some time.

I don't know the financial end of this, but the article says that Westwood One (aka CBS) would not provide him with a producer and support crew anymore. This may be a case of more cost-cutting at CBS and not a reflection on Leykis.

That's a shame, I always liked Tom's show.

Got to the point where (before 105.3 flipped) Leykis & Russ were the only two shows I still listened to, just couldn't stand the rest of the shows on the station.

Well said. They are all very cool and laid back and it was always a pleasure working with them. When were you employed at KLLI?

And for those who don't realize it, most of Tom's 'views' are shtick. He found a niche that worked and he stuck with it. I don't agree with most of the things he said regarding women, relationships, money, etc... but mad props to him for finding something that worked and sticking with it. The only thing I don't really approve of personally, is the fact that there are SO many morons out there who actually DO follow the things he says. That's pretty sad, but oh well.

The same could be very well said of those who tune into Limbaugh and come away with a lower iq than what they started out with.

or ya know... Air America...

If you mean the management of Air America , I am inclined to agree with ya.

I forgot to include the lower IQ after effect for Hannity listeners as well.

Oh? Well..They do have alot in common. They've burned through about as many wives! But then Limbaugh makes more money.

BGH

I hated how listeners used to call him Dad and stuff. Very weird sounding to me

I can't imagine that some of you would claim Tom's show is just 'schtick' while explaining how he is a 'nice guy.' Listen, we are in the radio business and we communicate messages and information to our listeners. Radio, like any artform, has a primary goal of leading a person into the Truth. Tom's show was just plain bad. His opinions were reprehensible according to any standard of Truth and Goodness any of you may use, whether it be his total disregard for women, his comtempt for the sanctity of marriage and of human life. You name it, on most issues of moral significance, he is plain wrong. To just pass it off as 'schtick' is to give him a pass on the countless lives he is influencing through his words... apparently in an attempt to make a living.

As those of us on this board wonder what has gone wrong with radio... I hope we can use this show and it's misuse of radio as a prime example of why radio has failed its audience.

1) Your confusing your values as the way people should think. This is a free country and people have the right to their opinion. Be it Liberal, Conservative, or whatever.

2) I've worked in Liberal, Conservative, and the KLLI guy talk radio. When I say they were "good guys" I mean that they had no tude or ego behind the scenes and thought that their shlt didnt stink. I have worked with some VERY conservative Talk show hosts that wouldn't even go shopping for thier own shampoo because they thought they should't have to.

Remember your values dont reflect to everyone else. That's what makes this country great.

Board Monkey:

Not to belabor a point, but what you expressed in your email below (not having 'tude, etc.) were an expression of your values. See, some folks think that only conservatives talk about values all the time... you have your own set of values that you think are important... as do others. You must call them what they are... your values. But the original point to discuss, which I think is highly appropriate on a board like this... is whether there are any core values that should be held by a decent human being... I'd bet we all agree that a flaming racist has poor values... because that's a core value that is accepted by most everyone these days... and for good reason. My point, if you can look beyond the relativistic lens through which most people see the world today, is that there are basic human values that a person should ascribe to to be called a 'good peson.' We've become so used to thinking that anyone who isn't arrogant or tude or have a 'tude is a 'good person' despite what they think. Truth is that a person can be very nice to people and still be very wrong. And such a person should be critiqued on the basis of his/her values expressed on air and not just because off air he doesn't scream at people. This is what is missing from most critiques I read on this site. There are core principal values that are right and some things are wrong.... Tom Leykis is far more on the side of the latter.... regardless of whether he has a 'tude or not. Does this make sense?

RR:

Its absolutely makes since. My point is, those of us 'behind the scenes' people have to deal with these on air personalities whether we agree with their views or not. I totally agree about what your saying. What is "morally" right or wrong and "what sells" are two VERY different beasts. In this industry of "entertainment" (because that's all it really is anymore) the bills have to be paid. While Tom's show is like the listening version of a car wreck (like Jerry Springer's show) it had a period of high billing and stayed on the air. After all this is business. CBS and Westwood One aren't in the "business" of selling "moral values". They want what is gonna pay the bills and their salaries.

If I have a "On Air" host that will come in and do their show with acting like a spoiled child about this or that, I'm happy. When hosts cant even come in and sit down without it seeming like a BIG production I tend to ::) because after all, its only radio. I've board op'ed John Wiley Price's show. Now, while I dont agree with almost anything he stands for, he was a very nice guy that was always professional. That's all I can ask for.
