Like 80s Rock?

i've been looking for an 80s rock web stream that doesn't focus only on hair metal, but on all the rock and roll that was made in that decade. You know... April Wine, Honeymoon Suite, Billy Squier, VH, Skid Row, etc. Sure some of it was lame but there's some great music in there too.

So i finally found a good one over on Live 365.

Downsides: there is some cheese (Huey Lewis for ex.) but the good stuff outweighs it. And the stream is 16kbps.

Good to know. People need to be continually educated that hair metal was not fully representative of the decade.

Many of us liked New Wave!

I remember well all of the great and fun videos that MTV show in the early to mid 80's.

Those were the days for Music videos and MTV!

I don't like the very commerical songs from the 80's from Pat Benetar, John C Mellancamp, and Hall & Oates.

But I love most of the other output from all kinds of 80's bands.....

If I had the big bucks.... I would be playing notheing but music that that was on MTV in those early years, before Madonna and Sting took over...... ;D

But there's two reasons WHY Madonna & Sting took over MTV...1) They were good. 2) Many of the other bands were lightweight one-hit-wonders. Case in point: Madonna and Sting have put out some (at best) decent albums...not great, but not awful either...and yet everytime they tour, they sell out. Can you say the same about Thomas Dolby, A Flock Of Seagulls or Men At Work? But, we're not talkin' about rock here...hell, even the stuff that they played on Headbangers Ball back then wouldn't stand up to today's rock listener. (I too would rather hear Jet, the White Stripes or Wolfmother before Bon Jovi, Winger, Slaughter, etc.) Even heritage rock bands like Aerosmith(except Pump in '89), Rush, The Who & ZZ Top recorded (IMHO) some of their weakest material during that decade.

Rock/classic rock/classic hit stations are learning that the 80s stuff is high on listener fatigue. Granted, many AC, HAC & Country stations are finding their formats' music from that decade still evokes positive feedback from audiences. But no matter how much lipstick we put on it, 80's rock will always be the butt of the joke...and rightly so if you ask me.

However, for arguments sake, if I absolutely HAD to schedule 80s rock for my station, some of my favs would be:

Stevie Ray Vaughn
Nirvana
Metallica
Guns n Roses
Van Halen
Rolling Stones
The Clash
Pink Floyd

But, hey I could be wrong and maybe should be playing Men Without Hats in power rotation. ;)

DITTO

There was alot aboit MTV in the early 80's that I did not care for.....But, there was juast as much that I really enjoyed ! ! To contrast.... 90% of what I hear programmed on Classic Rock Formatted stations blows, either because it always has blown, or, due to overplaying, now blows.

The mass of humaniods, that advertisers want to seek, may have poor taste in music, but, that poor taste, taken as a whole, generates the "numbers" that the advertisers seek. The audience I am part of is signigigant and large. But, it will never be as large as the "general public" of poor music fans..... So, corporate America says.... to HELL with good music being broadcast ! ! ! ! Play the banal crap, to draw the general public.... and we'll pay you the big advertising dollars you need for your Conglomerate Radio chain to be profitable for the dear dear stockholders of this culturally worthless business!! 8)

Rover...don't do it, get your head outta the oven, there is hope. ;D

For every over-researched, overplayed piece of crap I have the "honor" of playing everyday...there are just as many songs that make me sing along or bust out into some Tourette's-type air-guitar show (that's usually good for keeping sales folk from "drifiting" into the studio).

Somedays it does feel like we're in a war, but I keep sane by trying to win my own personal battles...because I know (and you do too), that our industry is gasping for air. But at least once a day by god, I play an unscheduled song, a deep track, request, etc...anything to stretch the musical depths of our P1's favorite artists. Which is where I believe the strength of a deep library comes from, and that's artist heritage. Especially in classic rock.

If you're gonna go deep, go deep with the artists that have the lasting heritage...Zep, Floyd, Beatles, Aerosmith, Stones, etc. Not many (true) classic rockers wanna hear a Winger deeptrack...and they would be insulted if a station tried to pass it off as one.

Okay, done ramblin'. We may lose the war Rover, but get back in there and keep winning those daily battles...it does make a difference.

Flock Of Seagulls had some good songs besides the hit I Ran. Photograph and Long Distance Love Song being the most notable choices. Like a lot of New Wave synth stuff a lot of the music did'nt hold up for a whole album. But they still have some gems that would work today.

Men At Work Business As Usual and Cargo are two great jazz pop rock albums. The latter may actually be better. Then the band ran out of gas. Colin Hay tours today playing music from well recieived solo albums and old Men At Work material. He draws respectable crowds.

Thomas Dolby is a computer whiz. Not rock and Roll but his stuff is interesting and deserves more respect. He made a lot of cool tunes besides Blinded Me With Science. Hyperactive is one that comes to mind but I know there's others. He made an album in th early 90's that was pretty cool.

I never cared much for Hall and Oates but Mellencamp and Benatar were alright. Mellencamp actually was better and the 1985 Scarecrow lp was far from commercial. Probably one of the best albums of the decade and his career in my opinion.

Rush New World Man and even Big Money in 1985 were pretty cool. Men Without Hats Pop Goes The World is a fun song but we can all live without the Saferty Dance.
