DCRTV gets confirmation that Radio One's Majic 102.3, WMMJ, is hiring a new airstaff for a relaunch of the urban adult contemporary station. Over the weekend, we told you that Radio One had placed a "help wanted" ad for three on-air personalities. Last week, the station fired its entire local airstaff, keeping the syndicated Tom Joyner in mornings...

Talk about a real slap in the face to Olivia Fox. I have a theory that they just decided to wipe the slate clean, rather than just single out Fox with her health problems. That way, they might avoid a discrimination lawsuit.

Disgusting, yet would not be surprising about this company's history of shady behavior. I hope WPGC and WHUR sees this as an opportunity to steal away a chunk of WMMJ's listeners by attempting to shifting their playlists to cater towards the 25-54 demo during the daytime hours. It would show Radio One that screwing over winning talent can cost you big time in the PPM environ.

Most likely, they are trying to exploit the weak economy by hiring a few of the many out-of-work broadcasters at low wages. They had some of the top pros in the business and they probably didn't come cheaply. However this is a strategy that has always failed for a number of stations in a many markets.

In most fields those who go out of business do so because the competition beat them. One of the strange ironies of the radio business is how many of the top stations were taken down by their own management -- death by suicide. Just in this region those include WLPL (with a move similar to WMMJ now), WPGC (letting top talent leave and then ditching top-40), WASH, WMAL, WGAY and possibly others.

Do anyone think Radio One/WMMJ will hire Washington radio legend Donnie Simpson next year( Feb 2011 when his WPGC radio contract is over ) ?

Donnie Simpson is and would be too expensive he was making reportedly 4 million dollars a year at WPGC and CBS Radio. Radio One will not pay him that much money without some kind of syndication. He would have to come down off of that salary for Cathy Hughes to hire him maybe 2 million a year maybe.

Well, it's still a huge possibility considering he is a household name in the DC radio market and advertisers would just line up behind his name in the marquee...

Also WPGC hasn't been the same since his exit because I see Big Tigger still isn't cutting it in mornings like Donnie was...

If PGC shift their playlist anymore toward the 25-54 demo They will have to shift their format to Urban AC. they already lean VERY HEAVY R&B During most dayparts and ALL R&B during the slow jam show.

Um, no. I'm saying they need to shift their playlist back to the balance where it keep its power/top song hip-hop and R&B spins below 50 times per week and aired more hits from the station's rhythmic inception from 1987 to present. In other words, PGC needs to go back to targeting the 18-49 demographic block rather than just the 18-34 target of present.

Kilamanjero Big Tigger has better ratings than Donnie did in the 12 plus demo with the monthly PPM. The PPM `S did Donnie in sadly at PGC. Also WPGC is starting to rebound in the monthly PPM ratings in Feb 3.2 in Jun they had a 4.0 so the ratings are on an up tick. I like Donnie as well but at this point i think that urban AC is the format for him not Drake, lil Wayne, and Jay-Z.

I noticed Magic topped HUR in the latest PPMs. That is scary with no personalities.

Anybody know how PGC and KYS are doing middays, afternoons, and evenings. I am curious to know especially how Lil Mo is doing up against Easystreet and the Hometeam vs Q&A.

Also anybody know where Michel Wright is. Could she pop up on the new Magic?

I've heard ads on WPGC that Michel Wright was still doing recently. I think she is doing mostly voice work for the CBS Radio Washington.

I see Magic has overtook WHUR in the PPMs again. I like what they are trying to do with Magic but their playlist is very very limited. Sad
