Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

Heard someone mention this a short while ago but found nothing about it on allaccess. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

from FB:
99.5 KISS Rocks San Antonio
October 25, 2011

An open letter from San Antonio Cox Media Group VP of Programming Virgil Thompson:

I want to let our loyal listeners know that John Lisle and Steve Hahn will no longer be heard on KISS. The other key member of The Lisle & Hahn Show, Kelley Kendall will remain with Cox Radio in a position to be announced at a later date.

First, I want to thank John and Steve for their years of service to 99.5 KISS and the San Antonio community. Lisle & Hahn’s current stint with 99.5 KISS started in January 1992 and enjoyed many great moments in the last 19 plus years. Lisle & Hahn were also key members of the KISS air staff with various stints in the 1980s and have been one of the longest running morning shows in San Antonio and in the radio industry; that accomplishment is truly rare in the hyper-competitive radio business.

99.5 KISS appreciates you, our loyal listeners. We would like you to look at this as an opportunity to help us build a radio station that truly meets your needs. We want your opinion on what you would like to hear in a morning show on 99.5 KISS, what style or type of rock music you want to hear and how much of it we should play! We know you are passionate listeners and trust you will give us great feedback to use as we build an even better 99.5 KISS. No station is perfect…but we’d like to get as close as we can…and we think we can with your input. Stay tuned and listen for the ways you can make your voice heard.

99.5 KISS listeners have attended and participated in hundreds of concerts we have presented over the years and events such as The Margarita Pouroff, blood drives, food drives, and other charitable and community endeavors. We appreciate you and hope you will keep listening and offer your input on what you hear in the future on 99.5 KISS.

For advertisers, 99.5 KISS and kissrocks.com, offer one of San Antonio’s most enduring radio brands, with passionate, active listeners that respond to the various methods of advertising via on-air, on-line or lifestyle events. 99.5 KISS delivers results!

If I can be of further help, please call me at (210) 615-5400 or you can reach me via e-mail at [email protected].

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

Wow, good luck to them.

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

I wonder if a format flip is in store. KISS has been struggling lately, and I recall they used to be pretty dominant in the ratings.

Maybe, but to what? SA has no real alternative station. Stranger things have happened.

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

It's been years since I've heard these guys on the radio, but they have ALWAYS been one of my all time favorite morning shows, and ALWAYS two of the nicest people I have ever known. They had a long run, and in my opinion, deserved every good thing that came their way.
Y'all can snark all you want, but how many of us ever lasted that long in one place, or remained atop the ratings for so many years?
Kudos, Rude Boys. Kudos.

Not surprised in this move. I still believe Cox will dip back into Top 40 radio once or shortly after Party flips to K-Love. But it's kinda ironic that this occurs weeks prior to Party switching to K-Love.

Btw, how many Alternative Rock/Rock stations have flipped in 2011?

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

Well they do have THE perfect call letters for a CHR and it would really piss off Clear Channel for 99.5 KISS-FM to be in San Antonio and not be theirs!

Interesting you mention a possible CHR flip. Not sure how it would work, but AllAccess is reporting rumors that CHR morning show host Billy Madison could be moving over to KISS.

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/a...rs-john-lisle-steve-hahn-exit-bill?ref=search

On one hand, Billy Madison may be coming from a CHR, but he was on the Edge in Dallas for a while, so he does have some rock radio experience.

On the other hand, if Cox indeed plans on flipping KISS to CHR and Billy Madison is being relocated for that purpose, the fact that they're staffing up before going live is a good thing.

That being said, I personally see Cox sticking to their rock guns for a while longer. Maybe modernizing KISS and shifting to a harder Active/Alternative hybrid like KTBZ in Houston. I'm of the reasoning that if Cox is going to let go of one of its rock stations for a go at CHR, it'll be 106.7 again.

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

Hasn't Active Rock been on the decline in recent years anyway? The acts just don't fill the arenas the way they used to. Most active rockers have slid to Classic Rock to keep the legacy alive. KZEP and KLBJ-FM are a couple of good examples. But KZEP's success may preclude KISS from sliding to Classic Rock.

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

Cume-

99.5 KISS July '11 420,500, Aug. '11 408,000 and Sept. '11 377,000
X106.7 July '11 323,100, Aug. '11 283,100 and Sept. '11 263,200
Party 97-7July '11 328,700, Aug. '11 299,300 and Sept. '11 303,700-Rimshot Station*

Noticed the steady decline at both KISS and X106.7? Get rid of KISS and move atleast half of those listeners X106.7 with less overhead.

This is possibly why Cox did a music tweak at Magic and capture more of the 25-54 demos. Insert a Chr station and capture 18-34. Similar strategy that CC has done in many markets. An example of this is in Dallas with KDMX and KISS.

Just my opinion of what possibly will take place. But the number don't seem to support a continuation of KISS Rocks....Again, this is my opinion.

Anyone see this thread?

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

I hope they aren't thinking of turning KISS into a rock version of KVET by killing the morning show for no reason. Why did they get rid of a popular morning show like that if they aren't gonna flip?

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

The reason they're getting rid of Lisle & Hahn is because PPM has been absolutely brutal to them. They're long past the point of being able to sell them based on their diary numbers from a couple years ago. Lisle & Hahn are, by no means, an isolated incident; the personality based morning show has been getting replaced by the more music morning show ever since PPM came out. PPM has shown that people aren't listening to banter in the morning like everyone used to think, even if they like the morning personalities or the morning show in general. Of course, in a lot of cases, you're seeing rock stations drop syndicated morning shows, like Bob & Tom, because the heritage morning show either never existed or was dropped in budget moves years earlier.

By the way, one reason I don't think you'll see Cox blow up KISS outright is because PPM has, outside of morning drive, been very good to rock stations as a whole. I could definitely see them retooling the rock format, but, if I were a betting guy, my money would be on the rock format staying around in one form or another.

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

I read the article in the Express-News and it you know it's the same thing that happened to the KVET morning show. PPM said nobody's listening so let's go ahead and kill it. Sad, personalities really don't matter in radio anymore, it's truly a numbers crunching game. I remember one of my old program directors telling me, 'stations that sell and live by the book die by the book' and it's proving to me even more today than it was 20 years ago.

Re: Lisle and Hahn Exit 99.5 KISS???

From mysa.com:

“Their contracts weren’t renewed,” was how Virgil Thompson, vice president of programming for Cox Media Group — San Antonio, put it in a phone interview.

He pointed to ratings as the culprit. Thompson explained that the morning show — which mixed irreverent talk from Lisle, Hahn and Kelley Kendall with rock music and was dominant in the ratings for some 17 glory years — saw a sizable dip in audience the past couple of years.

Anyone still believes Rock will remain the format at KISS?

I still believe some derivative of rock will be on KISS. As I said before, it could be a slightly different derivative of rock, but I think KISS is remaining rock.

I say modern rock/alternative. It's gotta be.
