Yup, said story was true- I was there. The Baltimores became incensed when they discovered that the stations they traded for less than $1,000,000 could have been worth far more so they made my life in the transition phase less than pleasant. I only wanted to make arrangements for transfer of the tangible assets (Control consoles, cart machines etc) from the basement of the Franklin Street operation to our new home up the street in an orderly fashion. They were less than cooperative. I suggested that they give me the public file and they did and showed me the door inviting me to return at the stroke of midnight when the transfer effected.
To be fair I was this guy from out of town with a cowboy hat, long hair and a full beard and probably not so great an attitude.
We gained access on a Sunday night and what I remember most is Tommy Somers insisting that we get every foot of cable out. "Wire is expensive you know" he said. Meanwhile we were lugging the consoles up the street on our backs! We got on the air that Monday morning at 6am but it was less than pretty.
Again there is much more to this story. If only I could tell it all without fear of a lawsuit. Maybe I should do like Yonkster and make up fake names.
I must admit I was sad listening to the all news sign off that night. It was obvious that those folks had given their all to make it work against all odds and I felt for them.
I also had to interview the entire staff of the all news operation knowing I would offer a job to only one or two. That really sucked. I sat for two days in a cold conference room at the Gennetti Hotel and spoke to all of them. What they must have thought of me. Big cowboy hat, full unkempt beard and long greasy hair. Out of it from working 18-20 hours a day. (That's my story- I'm sticking to it!) I told them all that KRZ would shortly be the Number one station. They pretty much told me I was nuts. I hired Bud Brown. Still at KRZ (WILK) to this day.
I have all this stuff pretty firmly in my mind and in some cases have documents/photos to back it up.
But the stuff that is documented and the pictures only tell a fraction of the story.
