Little T&A

A question came up the other day regarding if the Rolling Stones song "Little T&A" is appropriate for air play?

What's your station's policy on this?

Re: Little T&A

Why wouldn't it be? "T" and "A" are not exactly fineable? IT's not like it has the lyrics, "She'll make a dead man ***"...

Re: Little T&A

first time i heard that song i heard it on wls am 89 the rock of chicago..i bought the album :)

Re: Little T&A

yes, it is on the radio...93.3 wmmr plays it on occasion

Re: Little T&A

Over the years, I've always heard Q104.3 in NYC play that Stones song as well as Who Are You by the Who with the line "who the f*** are you"; Jet Airliner by Steve Miller with the line "funky s*** going down in the city": and Money by Pink Floyd with the word "bulls***".

However lately, I've noticed them playing more radio friendly versions with the offensive words omitted. Why?

My guess is the stations are more sensative (or paranoid) to the increased focus by the FCC on cleaning up broadcast radio. However it's crazy to think that something that was OK to play on the air for 3 decades is no longer OK. Makes no sense to me.

Re: Little T&A

I would never, never...EVER play edits or dropout versions of songs.

I remember in the late 80's flipping a station to classic rock. When I ordered up my Gold Discs from TM Century's "classic rock" library...I was a little pissed when I noticed all the edits. Not just in content but in length as well (4:30 min version of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes). I packed it up and sent it back with a nastygram to TMC.

This is one format that you do not **** with the music, the listeners demand that we treat it with respect. For example, my jocks don't talk up intros, and if a song is a bit too "edgy" lyrically for the workday, then I just daypart it.

BTW, a Little T&A is meek compared to...say, Down With The Sickness by Disturbed.

Rock with repspect.

You might never, ever play edits of songs. But with the current FCC climate, you certainly might consider playing the edited version of "Who Are You" and other similar titles. It only takes one complaint (could be competitor-instigated) to the FCC and here comes a $325,000 fine...

TM Century. Have had quite a few of their libraries over the years. And yes, they did give me the long version of "Suite: Judy Blues Eyes" - along with the single edit. Ditto with Who Are You, Light My Fire and all your favorites. Those unedited - or not - were marked with the word "Content" next to the title and artist on the CD. Don't know what deal you got..but TM Century gave me all I wanted.

Little T&A? There's nothing wrong with it.

I've yet to see a complaint to the feds about a song lyric stand up in appeal. As far as the "current FCC climate"...I believe that we've seen the worst of it, the dust has begun to settle as it always does when the indecency issue rears it's ugly head (about every 8-10 years).

Rock with respect.

And you and your stations (which it sounds like you don't have) will be fined $300,000 every time some paranoid mom calls the FCC about those tunes.

I am afraid of losing my job...so i edit the tunes...and no one cares!

So go on and play Tipper Gore, my friend

Re: Little T&A

Well "my friend"....

as you may (or may not) know, a complaint to the feds does not merit an automatic fine against a station.

You SHOULD know this.

And just because you don't hear directly from the listeners doesn't mean that they don't care. In perceptual studies, most listeners don't reach out to complain about things like edited songs because
a) they don't believe there even IS a live person there (they know and understand VTing), or
b) they don't believe their station "cares" about them or their opinion.

Finally, if you're afraid of losing your job over a song, you should consider getting a new gig. Out of radio, where you don't need a pair.
