Live 105.3 New Show

Smooth Jazz is elevator music and if it gets stuck between floors ,you really are in hell. Traditional Jazz is a helluva lot better. Mikes right tune into KNTU,or better yet XM has it,or perhaps load your ipod with it. Smooth Jazz is an audio form of sominex.

Smooth Jazz gets me hyped...Waymon Tisdale, David Sanborn, Evertte Harp, Marcus Miller, and yes even Kenny G.
I just hope the format can come back on a local stick. If not then I got Watercolors on XM.

I couldn't agree more Salem... Rick Braun, Count Basic, Miles Davis, Euge Groove, Sade, Candy Dulfer, Boney James, Richard Elliot, Joyce Cooling, Kim Waters etc. Yep, I have Watercolors too but I miss the local factor. I also miss the Caravan of Dreams... hopefully Scat Jazz Lounge will fill some of that void when it opens in October in DTFW. 8)

Getting Tony Romo for a regular radio call in show is a coup.

As far as smooth jazz goes, it's background music. Sponsors can't get much attention if the listener isn't listening. Might be a good way to get people-meter points, but an effective sales vehicle it ain't.
The ad-buyer would be better off with a news or traffic sponsor ;)...

I'd like to know how much KIFM in San Diego bills since it is #1....

On to another point, since this thread is so multi-dimensional...Smooth Jazz is simply today's version of elevator music. It's not meant to be representative of real jazz. Try KNTU, or some of the satellite jazz stations instead to get the real thing. I can't assess what the old 106.1 played, as I was pretty miffed that they dumped the original KTKS/Kiss-FM for it, and I refused to listen...but I'd bet that it was more "interactive" than 107.5 ever was. 107.5 kept the DJ patter short, low-key and to the point...much like KMEZ, KTLC, KWXI, KPLX and other MOR stations did in the 1970s.

KOAI at 106.1 was playing new age music (recall at the time the format was called "new AC" or "new age")...musically it had little in common with what KOAI at 107.5 was playing when it changed to KMVK. The 106.1 was not "interactive." It was even more "elevator music"-ish as there was a lot of instrumentals.

Well, again showing the uselessness of 12+, being that KIFM skews sold old like KOAI did here (as does the format in 95% of the markets it is in) and isn't in the top 10 25-54, don't bet on it being spectacular unless they are running 30 minutes of ads each hour. In fact, signal challenged AAA KPRI outpoints it, as do the other AC variants like hot AC KMYI (#1 25-54), AC KYXY (#2 25-54), and "Jack" KFMB-FM (#5 25-54). allaccess has the top 10 for each of the large markets on their website. KIFM is not in the top 10 in any of the advertiser-desired demos.

In my opinion it was better musically because it did not have all the R&B in the format. Now I love R&B, but thats what K-Soul or KRNB is for. 107.5 lost me when I heard Janet Jackson's version of "That's The Way Love Goes".

IIRC there were no vocal songs during The Oasis' original debut. Even though it was instrumentals, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was elevator music. The music was from artists such as Mannheim Steamroller and Hiroshima. It was not really soft and relaxing like KOAX and KMEZ were.

The 106.1 Oasis got me interested in jazz period. I started off enjoying Pat Metheny, Kenny G., Basia, Level 42, Hiroshima, and David Sanborn. But now I have to have Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Bird Parker, Duke, Dizzy. Before The Oasis I had no interest in jazz what so ever, now its my favorite form of music.
