Live Club Broadcast/Mixshows

So Atlanta Urban stations are known for bringing the club to the airwaves every weekend for as long as I can remember from the mid 90s to now. Recently, I've noticed that Radio One's MAJIC has dropped it's Friday and Saturday nights broadcast. However, Sunday nights are still live from a nightclub. This past Saturday V-103 didn't do there usual broadcast neither and KISS 104.1 dropped theres last year. Is this trend fading amongs Urban stations in other cities? I know some Urban stations in other cities never did the live broadcast. It seems as if weekend mixshows are fading too.

K 97 IN MEMPHIS DROP THERE LIVE BROADCAST TOO.

Do they still have a live in studio mixshow in it's place? Most stations use the "Club"(ex. Club K97) title as there weekend mixshows.

I'm about to go waaay back and show my age on this one. Back in the early 80's here in Dallas/Ft. Worth, K104 did a live broadcast on Saturday nights for 4 straight hours commercial-free from either a club or skating rink. First, it was the late great Ushy on the wheels until our beloved Dr. Rock came to metroplex by way of the NWA crew out of Los Angeles... Those were the days...

When 97.9 The Beat graced the airwaves in 2000, my friend, George Laughlin, who was the General Manager at the time, had 97.9 broadcasting live from a different club every night, Tursday-Sunday. That no longer happens..

Even our Top 40, 106.1 Kiss Fm, at one point and time, was broadcasting live from a club on Saturday nights. Not anymore...

Our Alternative, 102.1 The Edge broadcasted live on Saturday nights from the Lizard Lounge for many years. Not anymore...

The only station doing that here is our Rhythmic Top 40, 107.9 Radio H2O. They are doing a broadcast on Sunday nights from a club, 9pm-12am.

Unfortunately Shawty, live broadcasts are becoming a dying breed like mix weekends are on holidays..

They may be going the clear channel way..lol a recorded mix that gets played more than once a month..lol but anyway. I used to work in radio. There are deals worked out between the clubs and the radio stations. Something like you keep the door and we get the bar type of situations. That only last for so long then when the contract is up they end the broadcasts. It has a lot to do with the sales department and contracts.

Sad :-[ One thing is for sure, Radio One here has always had a live club broadcast on HOT 107.9 (even 97.5 days) Tursdays thorugh Sundays and they still do. They even mix from 2am-4am on weekends too! However, the "20Minute Workout" weekdays at noon was dropped.

i remember the live broadcast in the DFW area, I think the other person leftout the live broadcast from the Lexington, RJ's on the Lake with Special K and many others for K104. I also remember the old school broadcast from Blackberry's on KSOUL. Yes it seems this is fading, but those live broadcast can be rather expensive. If it does not bring the club revenue in return, I can see why they would discontinue it. I can't tell you how many times I heard a broadcast only to arrive to an empty club because folks refuse to come out early.

Yes I did leave out some broadcasts, like the ones 100.3 Jamz did from RJs by the lake with the Mixmaster Al B. Bad. There were so many live broadcasts from clubs and skating rinks here, it's hard to remember them all.

Most urban radio stations have to assess what is keeping people tuned in and what making them biggest bang per buck. Mixshows and live broadcasts aren't those these days. Unless you have some major events or draw then there are going to be few urban stations willing to foot the bill for a live broadcast or mix. I consider stations just being willing to still daypart something of awe because if or once that disappears from the airwaves then urban radio will be officially dead.

But why not a good mixshow? A mixshow usually provides music that you wouldn't hear in regular rotation. Without a mixshow, an urban station might as well be a urban version of "Jack FM". IMO, urban radio without a mixshow is like food without seasoning: Just bland and boring...

Shawty, I thought I was the only one that was into mixshows. That is so cool!

I enjoy a good mix that spins some crossover, house, and old school with contemporary urban music as well. Also you'll still get the mix at 5PM on weekdays and if you are lucky at noon and 8 or 9PM on weeknights. However, weekend mixes outside of the 10PM-2AM on Saturday nights aside from major holidays might be something our memories.

I guess since KRNB has abandoned their 5pm mix, Old School 94.5 is taking up the slack. I heard the "5 O'Clock Traffic Jam" today. Mo Dav was mixing, and it was amazing, because he was mixing new jack swing, classic r&b jamz, while KRNB's 5pm mix used to sound more like jammin oldies.

bucwhyl is k104 still mixin at 5pm

No. They haven't mixed at 5pm since Bay-Bay been there and that's been years. Instead, he has a countdown show at 5. 97.9 The Beat, 107.9 Radio H2O, and now Old School 94.5 is mixing at 5.
