Live Talk - Live Sports?

Seriously? That's 105.3's new slogan? Carrying NASCAR and an NFL football game once a week qualifies you as a sports station... The end is near!

Don't forget the TO show and, if Gavin has his way, Mack Brown. And, the Super Bowl because we all know people would rather listen than watch.

I noticed they keep trying to add more sports. The reason I don't listen to the Ticket or ESPN very much is because I'm not interested in sports like I used to be.

And interviewing NASCAR drivers did wonders for P&K.

They are targeting ticket listeners for sure.

Last I heard, the Ticket was #1 M25-54, #2 P25-54 and the top biller in the market. Who better to target then the station that's dominating the target demo AND making more money than ANY other station in the market?

Just b/c you run some pxp doesn't mean you're taking away any listeners from the top m25-54 station.

Yeah... Russ, Jagger, Leykis, BDH..? HUGE sports authorites!! Psssh!

Well if you think what the Ticket does these days is Sports talk, then I guess KLLI is a Sports station too.

Calm down, didnt say it was wrong. Im just saying they are obviously targeting Ticket listeners more than ESPN listeners. They can do what the Ticket does, but cant stay on sports like ESPN.

I'm not sure that you guys are understanding the new slogan correctly.

Live talk. Live sports.

105.3 isn't trying to be an all sports station. They are just throwing out that they have LIVE sports.

That is a good point. However, the live sports has also lead to remotes at TMS, interviews with NASCAR drivers, and weekly football related shows. They don't just play the sport event and go back to normal programming. And, how many people listen to a car race? Baseball is fine on the radio, but that's about the only sport that does.

This is a horrifice idea.

I am a big sports fan and a big sports talk fan.

I listen to the ticket a lot. I don't listen to ESPN at all. 105.3 does not need to be sports intensive. It is a huge mistake. There is a market for regular talk radio that is not of a full political bent here... you just need to have hosts and shows that don't suck.

Without converting to full sports 105.3 would never be able to appeal to those of us who like regular talk and want a dose of sports, nor those who don't really care about sports and just want the talk. They would be solidly in no-wheresville.

Oh wait...

Which is dumb because although now they got the Cowboys, the number 1 sports station in town has never really cared about having live sports.

Anyone can carry live sports. Live sports do nothing for a station outside of the events themselves. If Gavin thinks he can draw ratings with pre and post game shows he is delusional.

Having live sports is dumb for that station. There is zero cross promotion and just big holes in the schedule where regular listeners won't ever tune in.

Gavin does the sports stuff because he is a sports geek. He probably listens to the ticket all day when he is not getting his panties cranked up on him by the RMS. Gavin should not be programming the station to what he likes.

I don't like the whole more sports stuff either and I'm a huge 105.3 listener. But if, and big IF, you can get more people tuning in on your weekends then try live sports.

Lets face it: KLLI wants to be another Ticket, but CBS/Spittle Corp. doesnt want to spend the money. Like ive been saying, they'll probably flip by 1q 2009.

They don't even have the Cowboys game. The Bone has that... All 105.3 has is a Cowboys talk show on Tuesday night. They carry a random NFL game on Sunday and NASCAR - that's it. Well, I did hear WWE talk on Jagger this morning... :-\

What is your definition of sport?

Cause there are plenty of people who consider this and other questionable activities as sports.

MY definition...

NFL, Baseball, Cycling, Swimming = Sports

I think if you re-read that, you'll see that it says 'even though they NOW have the Cowboys, the #1 sports station didn't have live sports" etc.
In other words, until (last year? 2 years ago?) the ticket (the #1 sports station) never had a 'franchise' sports team. So it doesn't take a sports franchise to be the sports leader.

And conversly, having a sports franchise doesn't necessarily help your ratings. Sure KRLD'sz night numnbers are up, but that does nothing to help their anemic daytime numbers.

KVIL and KLUV had teh Cowboys, and I have it on good authority that there was NO recycling of listeners. People tuned in for the games (if they couldn't get to a TV) and come end of the game they'd switch back to their regular station. Most game listeners are male, KVIL got NO uptick, like NONE in men numbers from the game. Yes they'd get listeners, but overall, the number of men tuning in to hear the game was a wash with teh number of women tuning away to find music...

No basketball? No soccer? No golf? No skateboarding, skiing, or snowboarding? These are considered sports among a lot of people.
