Local affiliates of satellite formats

It probably makes no sense to post this information on the threads for the formats themselves, since this has nothing to do with that. And this information doesn't go on the thread for stations doing their own music either.

My Worthless Classics affiliate played "Make Love to Me" by Jo Stafford the other day on the local morning show, which also includes Glenn Miller from time to time. She's one of those artists I've seen listed elsewhere on these boards as someone the satellite format dropped. On the other hand, the same station played "Cruisin'", the Huey Lewis-Gwyneth Paltrow duet, which is terrible on a standards station because of the contemporary beat. Since there's no oldies station in the area the station covers, they also play "Mustang Sally", "Shotgun", "Doctor My Eyes", "Still the One", and other songs that really don't sound right. Although these days who knows if the satellite format hasn't added some of these.

The Dial Global affiliate has an even stranger philosophy. The morning show is almost entirely standards since the host and owner of the station came from a Stardust station. The all-request afternoon drive-time show is still like Unforgettable Favorites (the station's format until July), and has included "Take It On The Run", "Hold On Loosely", "China Grove" and "Don't Stop Believin'". But even on the morning show, I heard "Dream Weaver". In the station's defense, six of the last seven songs played on the morning show are requests. "Mr. Lucky" by Henry Mancini is always the last song, and the first song in the second hour after the news is always "Nothing But the Best" by Sinatra. On the other hand, we can get lucky with an all-request show. "Friendly Persuasion" by Pat Boone was played another day. I heard that one recently on Dial Global.

Is this a jukebox in a bar or a radio station set to "iPod"? I didn't know there was a "Jack" format for Standards...what a train wreck this poor guy's running... Mr. Lucky to China Grove and everything in between. And I just bet the owner couldn't hit "STOP!" either...Phew!

"China Grove" is only on the all-request afternoon show (and I haven't heard it lately). The station used to be an affiliate of Unforgettable Favorites. Whose music was apparently programmed by the chimp I got my name from. Now they're Dial Global, but only when they get the music by satellite.

Actually, there was a Jack format for standards. My Timeless Classics affiliate did this in October 1997. And went back to the satellite each night at 9, except Saturdays. I complained by phone, snail mail, and using their new web site, email. I put "chimpanzee" on the subject line of that first email I ever sent (it didn't require an email address for the sender), only I made a typo, and you can see where I got my email address from.

A month later the people (or chimps) responsible for this Jack format were sent packing. Though when they played their music locally during the day in 2000 and 2001 they weren't much better. I read them the riot act for "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner. The good news is Glenn Miller wasn't dropped this time.

Oh, wait, the first song is usually the one the DJ played a short segment of and gave hints so people could call in and win a prize. Then the song gets played in its entirety before the other five, and then "Mr. Lucky".

About "China Grove"--that is the name of a town in the listening area of the Dial Global station. And the DJ who played it is the owner's son. Kids! ::)

I'm glad college basketball season is almost over. Every Saturday for the last few weeks, it seems, the clock radio comes on for Paul Harvey (who is on at that time weekdays) when I am cleaning house. Basketball! And it's the women! And one day they lost by 40!

Regarding my Timeless Classics station (yes, it probably has music that time of day, but it could be basketball, and besides, who wants to listen to that garbage they're now calling Timeless Favorites), I have to add "Crocodile Rock" to the list of songs played on the morning show.

That morning show with all requests at the end had "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John. Unbelieveable! My Worthless Classics affiliate did that song too one day. I also heard them do "Ghostbusters" when the movie of that name was released on DVD. At least I think that's why.

Worthless Classics affiliate played "Wheel of Fortune" by Kay Starr yesterday. I looked up the lyrics and I think that's right. On the other hand, "Time of the Season" by The Zombies was also played. Which is to be expected because this morning show has been a mess since long before Pointless Classics was also a mess.

Wow! The Zombies and Kay Starr. That is quite a stretch. It sounds to me like somebody needs to check their medications.

In Hawaii, Honolulu has Dial Global Adult Standards affiliate 99.5 the Jewel KHUI and the Big Island has ABC Timeless Classics affiliate KIPA AM 620. 99.5 the Jewel features Sid Mark's "Sounds of Sinatra" every Saturday morning and KIPA plays a traditional Hawaiian tune every hour at approximately 10 minutes till the top of the hour.

Hey vchimp, out of curiosity, what are the Timeless Classics/Dial Global stations in your area?
Mix 106, WAME and WEGO play Timeless Classics, though the last two have a lot of local programs, some of which aren't music. WEGO was a community station with oldies for many years, but the company that owns Mix 106 and WAME bought it.

Memories 1280 is Dial Global but was Unforgettable Favorites for four years after the current owner bought it. Before that it sounded a lot like Unforgettable Favorites anyway when it played music. It was all-sports most of the time, though.

Are you kidding? One morning I heard "Pennsylvania 6-5000". No one said whether it was the Glenn Miller version. But they regularly play Glenn Miller. And have you seen what other songs they have played on the morning show? "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", "Shotgun", "Mustang Sally", "Ghostbusters" and "Physical".

The Dial Global affiliate's morning show is almost as bad.

But there's more on that above.

Patti Page's "Cape Cod" was played before Paul Harvey on that station. After Paul Harvey, I happened to turn to the Useless Classics station and heard Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz", which was requested.

That sounds almost like what the satellite formats did with Glen campbell several days earlier.

I guess they could do that. My Timeless Classics station used to insert a song of their own during some commercial breaks. They got to run some local commercials if they did a short song. One of these was "Fun, Fun, Fun" by The Beach Boys, and when I complained to the national DJ I was told that was not even in their playlist (Probably is now). Then I remembered how the station had been doing some of these louder songs ever since we lost oldies.

No, I'm not kidding. To be honest, I like some of those songs, but I don't think they belong on a "Standards" station. I'm glad I don't have to be subjected to their programming where I live.

It is very difficult to be all things to all people. I guess they figure that there is so little standards programming left on the radio, that you will stay tuned in, even if you really don't relate to the song that is playing right now. That may be true if your listeners haven't heard of XM or Sirius.

P. T. Barnum supposedly said “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American Public.” Nothing is new.

I'm so glad basketball season is over.

I spent much of Saturday afternoon listening to the Dial Global station as I cleaned up or washed my hair. Still, there seemed to be an awful lot of AC. Maybe I was too quick to praise that format.

FYI; the "stupid" basketball may be subsidizing the dial global music. I wish I could explain the economics of all of this to you. I've been to some dial global stations with only a FEW local advertisers. Sports and religion help alot.

This is a station that does well with selling commercial time. Even though there are two community stations (the other one is talk), I hear a lot of local commercials. Many, many times.

I don't think the job listings are paid advertising since the guy thanks the station like it's a public service. I do know they're going to have to pay that chemist more than $34,000 for two years' experience.
