Local Network TV Affiliates Who De-Emphasize Their Affiliation

WXIA is still 11 Alive; WAGA is Fox5. WSB is simply Channel 2, and I think WGCL is calling itself CBS Atlanta.

I forgot to mention this. Not only do I not know how the local affiliates here in Atlanta identify themselves, I also do not care. In 35 minutes, when Revolution starts, I'll scroll through the Comcast menu to see that show's name at 8:00, and I'll click it.

I do not watch NBC. I watch Revolution and sometimes Jimmy Fallon. But I don't select NBC as what I want to watch. I do not watch CBS, but I do watch The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. I don't watch the network Cosmos is on, whatever that is, but I always watch Cosmos. However, I watch it OnDemand because at first it was opposite The Walking Dead and now it's opposite Game of Thrones. I don't know what networks Resurrection or Believe are on, but I watch them OnDemand.

I'll watch my favorite shows because they are my favorite shows. I don't much care which network they're on, other than when they're on HBO or Starz, they are more risque and don't have commercials. I also think that attitude is fairly common among people who enjoy watching their favorite TV shows. That being the case, it doesn't seem to make much difference whether or not a TV station includes their network affiliation with their chosen nickname.

Resurrection is ABC and Believe is on NBC, Cosmos is Sunday nights on Fox.

Your choice, whether or not you care how the stations identify themselves. But there they are for anybody who does.

KPIX San Francisco can't seem to make up their minds. Even though they a have been a CBS O&O for a couple of decades, they were KPIX 5 for years, then "CBS 5" for about 5 years, now back to "KPIX 5." I have no idea what the rationale might be for the change back.

WTVF-TV of Nashville was analog channel 5. They use channel 25 for their digital transmissions.
I remember that whole "rescan" campaign of a couple of years ago. I believe that they were briefly on in two locations. But they are now still at digital channel 5. I never had any problem with picking them up, either before or after the rescan.

they still are at 2 spots but they've switched which is the "main" and which is the "translator"
Use to be 5 was the main and 50 was the fill in
Then they fired up 25 and that is the "main" station. They dropped 5 down to translator status and killed 50

Yeah, it never really applied to me because I live close enough that I could pick up 5 anyway. It was those others (at 25, 50, or whatever) that I could never receive. The whole debate only served to confuse me.

Although interestingly enough, I can now pick up QVC and HSN, although I never did a rescan to pull them in.

They were a Group W station that pretty much was KPIX 5 or Channel 5 for years until the CBS/Westinghouse merger. New York attempted to force the so-called CBS Mandate on them where they had to be known as CBS 5, but it never stuck; everyone still kept calling it Channel 5 or KPIX 5, so eventually they gave up and went with the colloquial consensus.

All of the former Westinghouse stations CBS bought (outside of KYW in Philadelphia, which pretty much ended up with new management when CBS came in because of the entire WCAU swap with NBC) have pretty much stayed the same or had entrenched management which refused to brand by CBS alone. WBZ in Boston went back to call letters after awhile as CBS 4, while WJZ and KDKA have just plain refused outside of having their channel number placed next to the Eyemark (WJZ is the most stubborn, keeping their news theme and image that would work just as well in 1995, even as the rest of CBS's O&O's now all use Enforcer and similar graphics).

in Duluth, MN the only one who does is Fox21

KDLH CBS 3 & KBJR NBC 6 use "the northlands news center" (KBJR runs KDLH)
WDIO ABC 10 uses "10 & 13 news" or "channels 10 & 13"....in Duluth its WDIO 10 (cable 13) and their satellite station WIRT 13 (cable 10) in Hibbing

i haven't paid much attention to channel 5 in recent years,so I was surprised to learn that they dropped their longtime 'Eyewitness News' branding some years ago.

WCCB Charlotte, NC was "Fox Charlotte". I'm not sure when the change happened but they started calling themselves WCCB. It may have happened when a competing station was purchased by Fox. Now that they are a CW affiliate, there is a CW in the logo and I think they mention their affiliation.

For about a full year, WLOO--Jackson, Mississippi's My Network TV affiliate--has been going by The Loo, instead of My 35.

2003-2006: WUFX (Fox 35)
2006-2013: WUFX (My 35)
2013-present: WLOO (The Loo)

Does anyone really believe that if two programs are on the air at the same time, anyone would watch the one they liked less just because of which network it was on?

Add another station that no longer uses their network affiliation in their branding: WIAT-42 (CBS), Birmingham. Starting this week they changed their branding from CBS-42 to WIAT-42, and debuted a new (and might I add not so good looking) news set.

This change has gotten my mind wondering just a little bit. WIAT is owned by LIN, which is in the process of being bought by Media General. Media General also owns the NBC affiliate in the market, WVTM-13. Could Media General move the CBS affiliation from WIAT to WVTM as a condition for keeping WVTM?

Could, but not likely. I imagine NBC has a fairly ironclad and long term affiliation deal with the station since it's a former O&O.

Besides, Media General sold off WIAT about a dozen years ago in order to buy WVTM. Doubt they would want them back now, even on spite of their recent ratings surge.

They definitely do. The 10:00 news does start with a mention of "Charlotte's CW".

In Britain, this station is known by its more formal name "Toilet TV."
