Local New Year's Eve coverage

That was New Year's Eve 1996, and the Hacienda hotel imploded to the ground at midnight...clip here from KVBC (now KSNV).

As far as I can tell for this year, as soon as I see 12:00:00 on the clock...GOOD BLEEPIN' RIDDANCE 2020!!!
I had a feeling it would be a strange year right from the first minute, when the Space Needle failed to light off the fireworks because of high winds...and still couldn't do it on the 2am second attempt. That just never happens (at least in a normal non-pandemic year).

My feeling about 2020 being a strange year came about a couple months before, when neither team in the World Series won a home game.

Kobe Bryant dying too. It was completely from left field, and along with the lockdowns that were ongoing in Wuhan + the millions of animals dying in Australian wildfires, it now feels like we were being prepared to experience one of the more difficult years in recent times. Pain and misery were happening from nearly the start of '20. Two hours and 20 minutes to go.

The first reports of the "new pneumonia" hit last year in China, and I remember the first reports of it, including the cover up and the doctor who discovered it dying either of the new coronavirus or "one bullet to the brain" disease. There was the "it can't happen here" that was prevelant. We were so wrong.

Several different newspapers that I look at had this yesterday under their "Today in history" feature. It is possible I have access to the actual newspapers only because of COVID-19, though I wouldn't have thought about using my library card at home otherwise back when only text was available, and even then just for selected articles.

Today's highlight in history

On Dec. 31, 2019, the health commission in the central Chinese city of Wuhan announced that experts were investigating an outbreak of respiratory illness and that most of the victims had visited a seafood market in the city; the statement said 27 people had become ill with a strain of viral pneumonia and that seven were in serious condition.

They still did the Idaho Potato Drop on KTVB Boise, no audience of course. And what a *fail* by those folks for audio. I couldn't hear the hosts near midnight or any of the fireworks. I know it's a weird year, but they could have quality-checked.

12/31/2021 is going to be so much better. I hope there's 1,500,000 in Times Square, tens of thousands at the Space Needle and another million at Big Ben. We can hope.

And of course, tens of thousands for the Peach Drop here in Atlanta (at either Centennial Olympic Park or the Home Depot Backyard (formerly the Georgia Dome) in between Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena); WSB, WAGA, and WXIA will split-screen that and Times Square as usual.

A local celebration gone national:

CBS to Ring in the New Year with "New Year's Eve Live: Nashville's Big Bash" A Star-Studded Entertainment Special on Friday, Dec. 31
The five-hour celebration will feature nearly 50 performances from locations across the city, including the mainstage in Nashville's Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park anchored by headliners Dierks Bentley, Zac Brown Band and Dan + Shay. The broadcast will cross multiple time zones, with the traditional countdown at midnight ET, culminating with the renowned Nashville music note drop and fireworks at midnight CT.

A local celebration gone national:

This may be another outgrowth of the CBS-Viacom merger. Viacom's CMT has remote facilities in Nashville for such a show.

Previously CBS was the only major network that didn't have a special live show on New Years Eve.

FIRST WFAA (Like it's sister station KUSA) is owned by TEGNA (No shouting intended as that's the way the company's name is spelled)

TEGNA is the broadcast arm of what used to be Gannett

SECOND - Everything at KUSA will be pretty much business as usual however it's a safe bet First Night Colorado will be prominently featured in Nexstar's broadcast hosted out of Las Vegas, produced by KLAS & broadcast by sister station KWGN here in Denver though

This is a nice surprise. Last time was the millennium, last yearly celebration on CBS was 1995-96. But how will it do vs. Ryan Seacrest and Co.?

Colbert reruns no more!
Bobby Bones and ET's Rachel Smith will host New Year's Eve Live: Nashville's Big Bash this year, apparently CBS' first NYE special in 22 years. I wonder how it will do against Rockin' Eve and CNN? I might catch this on NYE and see how it looks. I would assume it will be tape-delayed for PT as well.

Keep in mind that Nashville is in the Central time zone, so when the clock hits midnight on the East Coast, there won’t be any “countdown”. I’m sure eyeballs will be on ABC at that time.

I always watch the official ball drop on ABC.

However, I am hoping Joel McHale and Ken Jeong come back this year on Fox, as theirs was the only special really worth seeing other than interviews of people in Times Square.

I'm hoping the Space Needle celebration will be a go for 2021-2022. Otherwise, at least that giant glowing potato in Boise is still around! As far as I know, it's the only Mountain time zone celebration that is televised (on KTVB 7).

Honestly watching it on CNN is better as they show the feed clean and hold it for a few minutes.
