Local News in E. WA is in a sad state

With Sunday Night Football, Tracci & Tim do the Sunday night primetime news now, not Friday. But with a different open, who knows what's brewing in the corporate office.

Yes, I am aware of Sunday night. But it isn't just Friday that the main team is off. They seem to be off quite frequently on other days, and the 10:00 on Fox has been totally inconsistent.

Tim Adams will be out for a while due to a knee replacement. Blake Jensen from Q6 in Spokane pre-taped the 11pm WX tonight on KNDU, I suppose we'll see a lot of him, and Dave Law, and Emma Childs. And Karly is once again filling in for Tracci. She really that busy outside of the anchor desk, or are they treating her like a part-time employee? Tracci was out at least 2 times last week. KNDU has also hired a new reporter (or maybe two) recently.
And I know it's been a while, but where did Kristi Paulus go? I saw no sign of a goodbye from her at KEPR. She's been in the Tri for years, working for KVEW prior. Julia Thatcher, the new morning anchorperson, comes from one of the Midland-Odessa, Texas stations (I think KOSA).

I have totally switched to KEPR in the Tri market. I am tired of the KNDU inconsistency and lack of specific coverage due to trying to cover two markets that really don't meet each other in demographics, and/or lifestyle preferences. I don't agree with Sinclair's political bent, but I do like that they produce two different newscasts for the two very different markets.

Total collapse of KNDU (NBC) tonight (11/21) going off air during prime-time. Fox 11 also down. This is what happens when master control is out of market. KNDU has had dead air for over an hour, and the Fox affiliate can't run anything but informericals. Just pathetic service from Cowles. Somebody needs to take control of this mess.

I'm getting KCYU here (and all subs) but nothing from KNDO/SWX. And apparently everyone from Ellensburg to Pendleton has no NBC, even cable/sat subs. That's the second time in what, 3 months? GET A FREAKING GRIP NBC 'RIGHT NOW'! Whoever's running the store should be fired! Even KIMA is ran better than this and their master control is also out of town!

And here we are at 11:26pm, and still dead air on KNDU. Good grief, I know Thanksgiving holiday is underway, but there is no excuse for this. Just deplorable. I will boycott all KNDU adverstisers due to this. KNDU was once my go-to station in the Tri, but they have lost me as a viewer. The lack of consistency in their news product combined with this fiasco tonight leads me to choose other sources. Bye, bye KNDU.

And the problems continue... KNDU was off the air for the afternoon of Friday the 23rd. And the big game between Washington and Washington State on Fox11 is being frozen every 10-15 seconds. I don't know where this breakdown is occurring but it is just god-awful. Whoever is responsible should be fired.

It's fine here on KCYU 41, and it sure has been a doozy with the Huskies leading by 13 so far. Sorry for the issues down in Tri-Cities. Once again, knock knock knock! Anyone home at 3312 W Kennewick Ave? Cowles should be ashamed of themselves, the way they run the central WA cluster. Of course everything runs smoothly in Spokane!

KNDU still continues to have a problem with audio/video freezes. Not sure where this coming from. Not sure Spectrum is the issue, though Spectrum is fine on over 150 other channels that I get! We have had no snow, so it isn't a dish problem. There appears to be an ongoing problem with KNDU and master control in Spokane, or some other issue that the folks up in Spokaloo can't or won't figure out. Once again, a good reason to master control local, but I preach to the choir here.

They acknowledged it on the newscast. 'Our engineers are working on it' per a news release. Ahhhhhh, shut up! I don't believe them for one second. If this crap (freezing, OTA/cable outages, having to resort to FACEBOOK for the 11:00 news) happened at any Seattle station, besides for weather/windstorm damage, they'd be fired on the spot.
ALBEIT...I was happy to hear from Tim Adams tonight, Tracci called him during the 6pm news. He's slowly going through physical therapy and should be back soon. Wishing him nothing but happiness!

Tim was on the food drive earlier tonight. Great spirits overall, and I'm sure he'll be back to the green screen in no time. I didn't mind Blake Jensen filling in from KHQ, he's decent talent. Emma Childs - not so much. She needs to be less monotone and stop flubbing so much, IMO. I don't understand why KNDU doesn't hire a weekend weatherman from T.C. instead of throwing it to KHQ EVERY weekend. The entire Fox newscast is from KAYU on weekends as well.
Just got hooked up with DIRECTV, the dish will be installed on Monday. So I'll finally get to see a KEPR feed for the first time in years. Got to get used to 'Fox 11' instead of 41, as well. And I get KTNW in addition to KYVE. Maybe the dish will save me money over Spectrum's crazy-high bill for expanded basic cable. ;-)

Yes, when I had Directv, I noticed they ran both CBS affiliates from Yakima and Tri-Cities. KEPR has done a great job with the overall look, but they really need a new open as the current one dates back to the early 2000's! I really am watching KEPR more than KNDU these days for a number of reasons. First, KNDU and Fox11 have had way too many technical problems on going for several months. Second, I think KEPR's news product has better content with hard news. KNDU still seems heavy on feel good community stories and hard news becomes secondary. (Example: Shred Drive, where they spend half the newscast telling people where they can shred their documents!, heck you can buy your own shredder at Wal-Mart for 30 bucks!, end of rant) The feel good stories are important, but never at the sake of real news.

DIRECTV installation has been delayed until 12/20 here.
Just now, saw a promo for KVEW's 'new year's eve coverage' with Jason Valentine at Wildhorse Resort & Casino. I was very disappointed that they kept with Ryan Seacrest at midnight last year, instead of split-screening a live PT countdown. What's the point of local coverage, without 'Ryan-on-tape' AND Jason counting down together? Perhaps I'll shoot out an email to KVEW and see if there's any changes for this year. If they can do live coverage of a wildfire on a weekend, then they could split-screen the Pendleton people counting down with the ball drop and the balloons dropping, Auld Lang Syne toasts, etc. No wonder I get on KING5.com and stream live fireworks from the Space Needle (and I sure do miss NWCN).

New weather graphics on KIMA tonight, Sinclair-style of course. They have a nice 'timelapse' of day/night in the forecast as well, with the lights of the Yakima Valley shown on the night picture.
Wake Up Northwest on KNDU has Alexandra de Leon doing the newscast with Monty Webb now. Not sure if she's just a fill-in (she's normally a reporter) or is this her new role now that Morgan Ashley is in Seattle? Nothing much else to report. Haven't emailed KVEW yet re: Wildhorse NYE, it would be awesome if they could split screen the Times Square ball and the countdown in Pendleton.

KEPR also with new weather graphics. Now, let's re-do the open!

The open is one of the last Fisher-era components left of the central Washington CBS newscasts. I don't think the KVAL/KCBY/KPIC group in Oregon haven't gone fully Sinclair, either.

Yeah, but if they redo the sets, you would think the graphics would come along with that...unless they are spacing it out due to budgetary issues!

In the meantime, it is still sporadic with KNDU/KNDO. Sometimes we get Dial, sometimes we get Tinsley. They seem lost right now, but perhaps someone from Cowles can right the ship.

Numerous promos still for KVEW and Jason Valentine's special reports of New Year's Eve. I have emailed the station and have gotten no response on what they are doing. Seems more and more like they will stick with 'Ryan-on-tape' at 11:59 instead of at least TRYING to do a countdown from the casino. I can understand it's the holidays and some people are off, but I'd love to get any type of correspondence back. After all, I'm a KAPP viewer, spent a majority of my life west of the Cascades (and always watched local KING fireworks), if you're going to ATTEMPT NYE, show a local countdown at the time we start counting down. Okay?

Got an email back from Jason. He says 'unfortunately we aren't able to do that [local countdown] since ABC does not want their affiliates interrupting or even split-screening during the Times Square countdown.' That's new! ABC used to let their affiliates do that, at least in the Dick Clark days. I've seen many countdowns where the Baltimore, Boston, Atlanta affiliates etc. used to show local fireworks or drops (like Atlanta's Peach Drop) split-screened with Times Square. When did this start? Last few years, I suppose?
Oh well, at least I still have KING-5's stream! ;)
