"Local" Radio

First, for Greenie, please name those three stations!

Second, for AllTheGold, I looked WENG up and its not a true mom and pop since the owners are somewhere else, unless they are snowbirds and are at this station in the winter. But what caught my eye is their nighttime power: .0013kw, thats 1.3 watts!!!! I have a nightlight in my bathroom with more power! :D

Just to let you know, The owner of WENG IS a snowbird and is here most of the time. Secondly if you had dug a little deeper you would have found out that WENG simulcasts on 107.5 FM and I would venture a guess that the FM station has more power than your nightlight........and if you sleep with a nightlight.......well....nevermind ;D

I would imagine that at night, most people in Englewood would listen to W298AV- WENG's 80 watt (174 foot antenna) fm translator,....... since not everyone or not many people could park their cars or RV's under the WENG am tower. :)

Closer to Tampa than Englewood a 'Mom and Pop (and son Jeff Thornburg) is 1130 WWBF.

As far as local, Mom and Pop stations, I suppose Hernando county has two; WWJB 1450 and 106.3 (WJQB?) and for a real stretch....... WVLG 640 with tower in the Village of Sumter Landing (Sumter county )and studios in the Village of Spanish Springs (Lake county).

Also closer to Tampa is 1400 in Zephyhills, which is pretty unlistenable though/ (not sure what their call letters are this week)

Of course, all these stations have severe geographical limitations as far as coverage areas go.

WWBF 1130 is in Bartow.

(and for the record; I don't have a night light that has more than 80 watts! :) )

I only looked at the FCC AM query database and it didnt show the FM translator. I was thinking as I typed the post that WENG would be the PERFECT candidate for a translator. I worked for a guy in Ohio that owned two stations in Polk county back in the 60's and did the snowbird thing before I even knew what a snowbird was. We were just happy he disappeared several months of the year! Good for your friends at WENG, sounds like they are livin' the radio dream we all speak of. And as far as a nightlight goes, I want an old Gates BC-1J with the warm glow of real tubes.

As for the 3 local stations, still looking for the three that Greenie had in mind, hopefully more in the Tampa metro area. I definately agree with WWBF, in fact I had referred to them in another post. I know the Thornburgs and think they are doing a great job there. Also agree with WWJB but dont know about the stations in the Villages. True that WJQB 106.3 is locally owned but is mostly off the bird, only one local DJ doo-wop show on Sunday nights and a morning guy that almost sounds VTed. I do prefer Scott Shanon's format and play list to Q-105's oldies. Just not much signal past Dunedin. They do the remotes though, every weekend out there somewhere so we have to give them points for that!

My 3 would be WENG Englewood, WWBF Bartow, WWJB Brooksville. Just my opinion, I was only thinking AM here since that has become a flat disaster area. Terrible audio processing, programming, including blocks of dead air, etc. I just think if you can make a small market AM work today you must be doing something right. I think Bartow and Brooksville have been under the same two owners for 20 years, or more! Maybe three was cutting it a little thin but not much. I think of WVLG as being more of a Lake County station in the Villages. Speaking of the Villages, isn't that a little like Disney World?:-\

The Villages could be compared to Disney's "Celebration".

I would never want to live in The Villages, but that doesn't keep me from liking or listening to WVLG when up that way.

The Villages covers three counties, Lake, Marion and Sumter; used to be that most of the Villages were in Lake county, but The Villages has been expanding westward and now most of the residents and business are in Sumter county. WVLG is licensed to Wildwood (Sumter county) and their tower was in Wildwood, but several years ago, they moved the tower about 2 miles n.n.e. (still in Sumter county), it's near Lake Sumter Landing.

The main studios are in Spanish Springs (Lake county) and the remote studios are in Sumter county. (across from Dominic's Italian Restaurant)

WVLG is music 23 hours a day (live and local!) with a one hour program called "Focus On The Villages" which runs one hour every afternoon. (Monday - Friday)

WVLG bills themselves as the Best of the 50's, 60's and 70's. (although I have heard some songs from the early 80's).

From my primary listening location in s.e. St. Petersburg, it is impossible to receive 640 WVLG due to the 640 out of Havana and even if the Cuban station weren't on the air, I suspect the IBOC hash from 620 would fill that void.

Traveling south on I-275, I have picked up WVLG as far south as Bearss Ave; although the reception south of S.R. 54 (Wesley Chapel exit) isn't all that good.
