local simulcasts

Why is it that many years ago, the FCC ruled that a FM station may not merely simulcast its AM affiliate, but now James Crystal does just that on two nearby AM stations: 1000 and 1420.

Clear Channel is simulcasting WFLA in Tampa on at least a few stations.

In either case, it's a waste of bandwidth.

Remember when Paxson took the first step towards the destruction of heritage station WFTL, by making a "Supertalk" local network of WINZ, WFTL, and WJNO? What a waste of bandwidth: Rick & Suds on three stations in the same market!

1000 and 1420 cover two different areas...1000 is licensed to Jupiter and covers the northern end of Palm Beach county, whereas 1420 covers the southern end...They complement each other...In terms of FM/AM simulcasts, yes, at one point "shadowcasting" was in vogue, AM/FM simulcasts were only permitted for 25% of the day, with the rest of the day being "carbon copies" of the same thing on both AM and FM, but run independently..Take a listen to the KIIS AM/FM LA airchecks at:

Again, a network...And you're thinking of WFLF in Orlando, which, if you listen closely, isn't a 'simulcast', but really just using the name.

Was it really Paxson/Clear Channel that removed the WFTL calls from the station?

Hmm?

If you mean switching WFTL to WFFL and then to WFLL, no, that's James Crystal.

Supertalk never did what WFLA does; each station used its own ID, if I remember correctly, but they were all Supertalk.

With Norm Kent, it could be Sue-er-talk. ;-)

That's what I meant...I just find it funny that people put the blame on the 'loss of WFTL' on Paxson/CC, when the people who put the final 'nail on the coffin' were James Crystal. If I recall correctly, sure, CC made modifications to the talk format, but it remained talk with a good dose of local hosts until JC took over and got rid of just about everyone and put on Business Talk.

It's back to mostly local talk now, but on 850 instead of 1400

WFLA is not simulcast - it's "name" is being used by WFLF in Orlanda and WNLS (?) in Tallahasee - both are "newsradio's with a lot some of the same shows (Rush, C2CAM) but different shows, too.

Yes, it was Clear Channel, not Paxson who built the SuperTalk network. Whatever life WFTL 1400 had had long vanished before Clear Channel - and some would say it was in its death spiral before Paxson purchased it. However, it was James-Crystal that removed the WFTL calls from 1400, in what has been a failed attempt at imaging 850 as a "Ft Lauderdale" station. Nice idea. Good try. Didn't work. Oh well.

BTW, WJNO was not the SuperTalk station - it was WBZT. Consdering that WINZ's nighttime signal was deficiant in North Broward - and that's as early as 5pm or so in the winter months - using 1400 WFTL, which had a decent signal at night in areas the WINZ didn't, made sense, especially since this was Rick N Suds - arguably the biggest name on the "network." Adding WBZT brought them into the PB market. Not sure if "954" gets that West Palm and Miami/Ft Lauderdale are separate markets. Also, it gave some of the 1400 WFTL hosts a wider audience - Steve was put on WINZ, as were some of the othjer hosts, giving them a wider audience - potentially. Nice idea. Good try. Didn't work. Oh well.

OK. Haven't heard enough to realize that. I've just
heard WFLA IDs elsewhere than 970.

Techically, yes, if you're talking ADI's and SMSA's.

But from the listener's POV, if you're in the middle and
getting the same signal from three stations, you are entitled
to be annoyed and consider it a waste of bandwidth. I don't
know of anywhere in Broward (or southern PB Co. for that
matter) where you can't get WINZ, so I think that was needless
duplication. (But I may be wrong.)

Of course not. How many people in Hialeah or Homestead
are interested in Broward politics? For decades, FTL was
*THE* station for Broward. No more. We don't have one any more.

Well, yeah, it's got local talk but just the second, third or maybe fourth tier hosts....Steve Kane, Al Rantel (on a daily basis), Rick Seiderman Craig Worthing, those are the people who made the "old" WFTL...in fact, let's not forget Bob Gordon of an even older and even more successful WFTL....these days, well, ummm, Mister, I know WFTL and you're no WFTL.

So, what local hosts would you put on in 2005?
Edited by the other radioboy on 06/10/05 07:46 PM.

The pre-James Crystal WFTL

Maybe this would be a good time to mention that South Florida Radio History includes articles about these guys -- plus a chapter from Gordo's autobiography!

And check out the WFTL link in sig.

If I remember correctly, when 940, 1400, and whatever in WPB simulcasted, it was only the program content. They never simulcasted the important stuff, those thirty and sixty second suggestions of where to buy your next cars and stuff!
______________
